2. Fort Sumter, in Charleston, South
Carolina, was a peaceful Union fort, that
was attacked by the Confederate army in
April 1861. The battle lasted two days.
3. The Confederates had an advantage over the
Union, because the Union was on an island and
had limited supplies. This was the first attack by
the seceding States on the Union.

5. The Confederate forces bombarded the fort for
two days. There were no casualties during the
battle. The only death occurred during the
evacuation after the battle, when a Union cannon,
firing a salute, blew up killing the artillerist.
6. The Union Army surrendered Fort Sumter to
the Confederates. This event began the Civil
War. Even Though the Union ultimately won
the Civil War, the Confederacy won this battle.
