6. Bio-accumulation, Biomagnification Organisms accumulate persistent toxins from the environment as they take in contaminated air and water. Those toxins accumulate in their tissues. Then, organisms higher in the food chain ingest many of those smaller organisms, and the amount of toxins is magnified. Thus creatures higher in the food chain are more likely to suffer from toxic effects.
