WHAT IS TRAUMA?
An event will most likely lead to emotional or
psychological trauma if:
• It happened unexpectedly.
• You were unprepared for it.
• You felt powerless to prevent it.
• It happened repeatedly.
• Someone was intentionally cruel.
And…
• It happened in childhood.

WHAT IS TRAUMA?
Childhood trauma results from anything that disrupts a
child’s sense of safety and security, including:
• An unstable or unsafe environment
• Separation from a parent
• Serious illness
• Intrusive medical procedures
• Sexual, physical, or verbal abuse
• Domestic violence
• Neglect
• Bullying Source: www.helpguide.org

WHAT IS TRAUMA?
Following a traumatic event, or repeated
trauma, people react in different ways,
experiencing a wide range of physical and
emotional reactions. There is no “right” or
“wrong” way to think, feel, or respond to
trauma, so don’t judge your own reactions or
those of other people. Your responses are
NORMAL reactions to ABNORMAL events.

“Traumatic events are extraordinary, not because
they occur rarely, but rather because they
overwhelm the ordinary human adaptations to
life.” — Judith Herman, Trauma and Recovery

WHAT IS TRAUMA?
Childhood trauma increases the risk of future
trauma
Experiencing trauma in childhood can have a severe
and long-lasting effect. Children who have been
traumatized see the world as a frightening and
dangerous place. When childhood trauma is not
resolved, this fundamental sense of fear and
helplessness carries over into adulthood, setting
the stage for further trauma.

Regression
Many children may try to return to an
earlier stage when they felt safer and
more cared for. Younger children may
wet the bed or want a bottle; older
children may fear being alone.

tend to think that if something goes

an adult.

Helping a child recover
from trauma
It’s important to communicate openly
with children following trauma. Let
them know that it’s normal to feel
scared or upset. Your child may also look
to you for cues on how they should
respond to traumatic events so let him
or her see you dealing with symptoms
of trauma in a positive way. Source: www.helpguide.org

How much early diagnosis effect a traumatized

When do peole who are around the traumatized people realize
their trauma?
https://dogukanbinici.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/wallpaper-554031.jpg (background), http://upload.wikimedia.org (logo)
• A. Yıldırım: It can be noticed as from the two-year-old.
• A. Yıldırım: However, in our country, when children begin to
behave differently, parents try to argue children out of these
behaviours in several ways instead of investigating the cause
of problem.
• A. Çağdaş: Therefore, their trauma generally realize in
puberty.
How can be the traumatized people realized?
https://dogukanbinici.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/wallpaper-554031.jpg (background), http://upload.wikimedia.org (logo)
• A. Çağdaş: Each person's response to a traumatic
event is different.
• A. Yıldırım: Parents or people who are around a
traumatized people can realize his/her trauma when
his/her behaviours become different (their
behaviours became abnormal).
After realizing the children who traumatized which ways should
we apply?
https://dogukanbinici.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/wallpaper-554031.jpg (background), http://upload.wikimedia.org (logo)
Aysun Çağdaş:
• First of all, it is important to know what is trauma.
• We should incline the cause of the event.
• We should talk to child about the event in order to fill the
deficiency.
At this point what do duties fall to teacher’s share?
https://dogukanbinici.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/wallpaper-554031.jpg (background), http://upload.wikimedia.org (logo)
Aysun Çağdaş:
• First, teachers need to be sure that the recurrence of
abnormal behaviors.
• Parents may not be aware. Teachers need to meet with
the family about the problem.
• Teachers must know the cause of the child's trauma and
the consequences.
How should be intervened to parents who cause trauma
because of various reasons?
Does the government have any sanctions about this issue?
https://dogukanbinici.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/wallpaper-554031.jpg (background), http://upload.wikimedia.org (logo)
Aziz Yıldırım:
• First, the child or the surrounding people should make a
complaint. Then, the event must be proven.
• Unfortunately, after the event come to light, most of the
people try to hide it. For example, there are parents who
are PhD degrees and beat their autistic children.
• Even the child is seperated from family, the place s/he is
sent is not much better.
How long is the treatment of trauma?
What are the long-term consequences of lack of getting
treatment?
https://dogukanbinici.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/wallpaper-554031.jpg (background), http://upload.wikimedia.org (logo)
Aziz Yıldırım:
• The duration of each trauma’s treatment is different.
• However, the treatment of trauma that happened in
childhood is much easier when the event is fresh.
• If it is not treated, people may react as if the event is
lived in adulthood.
• This causes anger and aggression.

 The main problem is decided with matrix diagram is human, so we have
interested in human related problems:
 Families and teachers do not attach importance trauma.
 They generally do not have any information about trauma.
 Parents can not accept that their children are exposed to traumatic events.
They exaggerate or ignore the case and they can not resort to experts.
 So…
 Early diognosis can not be possible.
 Support can not be provided.
https://www.yerelfirmalar.com/uploads/firmabg/tt_221895.jpg (background), http://upload.wikimedia.org (logo)
The main problem is decided with matrix diagram is human, so we have
covered some solutions especially for human related solutions:
Family and teachers have great responsibility for solutions. They should get a
series of seminars about trauma.
Everybody should seek professional help for emotional or psychological
trauma.
For children who is faced with regression;
It's important to be patient and comforting if the child responds this way.
For children who think the event is their fault;
Be sure the child understands that he did not cause the event.
For children who is faced with sleep disorders;
If you can, give the child a stuffed animal, soft blanket, or flashlight to take to
bed. Try spending extra time together in the evening, doing quiet activities or
reading. Be patient. It may take a while before the child can sleep through the
night again.
https://www.yerelfirmalar.com/uploads/firmabg/tt_221895.jpg (background), http://upload.wikimedia.org (logo)
System related solutions:
The Ministry of Education should be organized seminars about trauma and
these seminars should be beneficial for parents and teachers in order to
realize traumatized children.
Each Family Health Center and Preschool Educational Institutions should have
at least one psychologist and they should check children’s emotional and
psychological health regularly.
People in charge should broadcast informative public service about trauma.
People who work at ERG should attach importance this topic.
