9. Paying attention to what citizens need...
76% want sensors in public places
that let them know which areas
are crowded;
70% want to compare their energy
use with that of their neighbors’ so
that they can optimize their
behavior; and
74% want both interactive street
signs and bike and car sharing.

13. Smart Citizens are our best hope and
technology is not always the answer
Technology-savvy smart,
engaged citizens are key
to success of smart cities
ICT alone is not the
answer -- e.g., use of
cable cars and public
facilities to integrate
neighborhoods in

Internet of Things (IoT) refers to “things” (which could be anything from living beings to inanimate objects) that connect to the Internet to “communicate” and “act” -- often autonomously.
Typical features of IoT: (1) sensor (to detect or measure), (2) processor (to compute, perform logic), (3) wireless communication (send and receive data), (4) actuator (do something in response to conditions or remote commands). Typically, an IoT object always has a “sensor” but may not always have an “actuator”.
Technological developments that spur IoT: (1) ability to add inexpensive sensors and communication capabilities to all types of devices; (2) adoption of IPv6, which can support unique addresses for billions of devices; and (3) ubiquitous nature of Internet connectivity via digital communication channels such as WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G/4G LTE cellular, satellite, and wired networks.
Sensors in IoT generate lots of data and the analysis of this data generates the “value” -- whether it’s thermostats that learn or personal health monitors that analyze data and provide feedback for you to manage your health
IoT naturally leads to “Big Data” and the two go hand-in-hand -- so the issues of “Big Data” apply here.
