Large Oil Company
Challenge
A large Oil Company wanted to re-evaluate their Analytics and reporting portfolio and determine wheter
Power BI could replace one or all of the 5+ different reporting tools that were being used throughout the
company by more then 100.000 people.
Solution
Avanade worked closely together with the client and Microsoft (Power BI Product Group).
• Multiple highly complex POC’s and Pilots delivered (Power BI, various Azure components)
• Microsoft Power BI subsequently chosen as the standard Analytics and Reporting tool
• Responsible for the new service development to enable Power BI for the whole organization
• Extensive advise on global roll-out strategy, governance, project assurance, adoption, support organization
and resourcing, security, authorization and related advanced requirements
• 100.000+ users, starting with 2000 pilot user actively using the tool
• Sources include SAP HANA, SAP BW, Sales Force, Oracle
• Enterprise roll out successfully completed for 100.000+ users in Q3 2018.

Power BI Governance at Large Oil Company
• Concerns regarding Data
privacy, antitrust, data export
restrictions, commercial
agreements and IP.
• Unmanaged data publication.
Need for visibility on what is
being published and shared,
and which user can see what.
• Ensure 3rd Party access to data
in Power BI is restricted.
• In the case of incidents of
content exposure, evidence on
who had access to what, and
within which time period. Audit
capability on who had access to
what and when.

Challenge Managed Governance Solution
• Setting up a managed service
around Power BI for a large
enterprise is challenging.
• Out of the box auditing
capability is limited.
Organizations need to build
their own audit reports for
better visibility.
• V2 workspaces - Decoupling of
O365 groups and new roles will
provide more support and
control capability around
managed service for Power BI.
• Start small, educate the early
