2. A Desert Habitat
A desert habitat is a harsh environment with very
little rain and extreme temperatures.
A land of hot days and cold nights.
Some deserts are dry and hot like northern Africa’s
Sahara Desert.
Some deserts are cold like the Gobi Desert in Asia.
Desert plants may have to go without fresh water
for many years.
4. Reptiles that live in the
desert
Zebra tail lizard
Desert horned lizard
Sonoran desert toad
5. Largest and smallest animals
in the desert
Camel is one of the
largest animals in the desert
Kangaroo rat is one
of the smallest animals in the desert
6. Ways animals cope in the
desert
Some animals sleep during the day and only come
out at night when it is cool like the kangaroo rat.
They can change the dry seeds they eat into water,
and they do not sweat or pant like other animals to
keep cool. They spend their days in their burrows
where the air is moist and humid.
Some large animals look for shade during the
hottest part of the day. Some animals dig a hollow
pit into the ground and lie in the cooler soil.
Desert Bighorn Sheep use their hooves and horns to
remove spines from cacti, then eat the juicy insides.
