development.
• The waterfront location made the growth of the city
possible and created the ideal system for the city’s
economy.

Lighthouse stands
165 ft. tall.
• The Castillo de San
Marcos was built by
the Spanish in the
late 1600s.
• The Old Town is a
great place to shop
and a popular area
for tourists.

4. Culture
• St. Augustine has a rich
culture that revolves around
tourism.
• People travel from all over
to visit the country’s oldest
city.
• A popular attraction that
people have to visit is the
Fountain of Youth.
• There are a lot of activities
that take place at night in
the city, and some events
that will crowd the streets.

5. History
• St. Augustine’s history began August 28th 1565 when Spanish admiral
Menendez arrived.
• The city was founded 42 years before the colony at Jamestown and
55 years before the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock.
• Throughout its time, the city has been under Spanish and British
control.
• St. Augustine is the oldest permanent city in the country.

• St. Augustine has both British
and Spanish influences because
of its History.
• The city has even had trouble
with pirates so they are a
popular theme in the city.
• There are events where British
soldiers will take over and
march down the city streets.
• The city’s food is mostly
seafood because of its location,
but there are some British and
Spanish influences on the food
around the city.

and reflect the past.
