Frisco is not your ordinary town. It is
a city so committed to art and culture that
it has established a program ensuring that
public art can be admired by making
it required.
The City Council passed a city ordinance known as “Percent
for Art,“ where a percentage of every new city development that
goes up in Frisco is required to integrate the design work of artists
into the development. Because of this vision and commitment,
the City was honored by The Greater Dallas Planning Council with
The Built Award in 2005.

Frisco was born of western spirit as a tiny watering hole and whistle stop, first
along the Shawnee Trail and then along the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad. It is from
this railroad that “Frisco” got her name, during the days of massive cattle drives in the
1800s. By 1869, the laying of track, which would become part of the Frisco line, was
completed in Texas. In 1902, one such line was completed from Denison to Carrollton
through the center of what is now Frisco. Men at depot stations along the San
Francisco line soon shortened the name to “Frisco.” In 1904 the people selected the
name “Frisco City” for their town in honor of the railroad that founded the young city.
It was soon shortened to “Frisco” and the rest is history.
Frisco Square opens onto Frisco Junction and then to the Historic Downtown
District, a vital part of the city and the heart of Frisco’s heritage. An active part of daily
life in Frisco, this area is also home to several annual Frisco festivals.
Pizza Hut Park, a world-class soccer stadium, serves as the cornerstone to this
innovative area and opens onto the Frisco Square promenade. This boulevard of retail
and multi-family housing leads visitors to Frisco’s unique City Hall.

22. A City With a Bright Future!
The leadership of Frisco carefully considered each
option for growth and, over the years, crafted a
beautiful, well-designed and thoughtful city.
Combined with a picture perfect location in the DFW
Metroplex, just 25 minutes from DFW International
Airport, it is no wonder that Frisco is one of the fastest
growing cities in America. It is a city with vision.
On the Horizon
Museum of the American Railroad
The Museum of the American Railroad will move its permanent
collection from Fair Park in Dallas to Frisco Junction this year! This historic
move is bringing “the Frisco” back to Frisco. Thirty-six vintage railroad
pieces will make their new home near the Frisco Heritage Museum.
Among the pieces in the collection is a vintage steam locomotive,
Engine 4501, built in 1941 for the St. Louis-San Francisco
Railway Company. Inside the newly renovated
space, the museum will feature unique artifacts
such as original china, a dining car, a museum
store and much more. Check for opening
dates online at VisitFrisco.com.

Basketball Is Coming To Frisco
The NBA Development League announced in 2009 that Texas
D-League Management, LLC had purchased the Colorado 14ers, with plans
to relocate the team to Frisco, Texas. The team will begin play in Frisco
at the Dr Pepper Arena for the 2010–11 season and will be renamed soon.
Donnie Nelson, Dallas Mavericks President of Basketball Operations
and General Manager, will be the principal owner and operator of the
team. A star-studded management team has been hired that includes
Nancy Lieberman, widely considered one of the most influential figures in
women’s basketball history, and Anthony “Spud” Webb, a 12-year career
professional basketball veteran. Lieberman will become the first female
head coach to lead an NBA or NBA D-League team.

Museum District
In addition to the Museum of the American Railroad, the Museum
District will expand this year to include the Sci-Tech Discovery Center and a
community black box theater.
Sci-Tech Discovery Center Completing their first season with the
traveling exhibit of Grossology, The Impolite Science of the Human Body, the center
will reopen in the Fall of 2010 with permanent exhibits.
