• Satellite operators leasing C band: FCC to consult on use of C-band spectrum for 5G.
This is possible because Intelsat/SES hold +90% of C-band capacity over US
• On-going trials with low-band spectrum
Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT)
• Recommendation for use of 700MHz band for 5G, with 26 countries in Asia-Pacific
including Australia, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.
Thailand
• Auction of three slots of 1.8GHz spectrum with a target auction date of August 2018

Satellite operators working concurrently at national, regional, and ITU level to obtain new
allocations for satellite services
• in Q/V bands: next generation satellite networks under construction

Central role of satellite services in essential connectivity to communities:
• critical that sufficient spectrum be allocated at international level for expansion of
services, so that designations do not have to be obtained on a country-by-country basis
once current spectrum resources are exhausted.
International harmonization is paramount:
• Spot beams cannot be efficiently split simply because they traverse national boundaries.
• If terrestrial networks end at a border, with no additional fibre or cable being laid, no

"Unlimited data offerings are no longer effective levers to attract customers from
competitors, the challenge now is to find ways to increase ARPU without negatively
impacting customer satisfaction.
Carriers are searching for new ways to upsell without alienating their subscriber base.
Postpaid services are trying to upsell their customers by bundling in entertainment
services.

2G/3G/4G mobile backhaul, rural Wi-Fi backhaul, aeronautical and maritime broadband
• New High Throughput Satellite (HTS) systems – GEO/MEO/LEO – bring even higher
speeds, lower cost-per-bit, and lower latency
• Low latency (sub-1ms) requirements of future 5G applications:
• content can be efficiently distributed & stored locally – through a multi-cast or point-
to-multipoint function at which satellites excel
