Mountain Biking at the Great White Rim Trail
One of the many adventurous and exhilarating activities offered in Utah's Canyonlands National
Park is mountain biking. The most popular biking path is no other than the White Rim Trail, which
loops around to approximately 100 miles. The White Rim Trail was originally a jeep trail specifically
located in the "Island in the Sky" district of the park. Nowadays, it is used more as a mountain biking
path because of its challenging terrain and very scenic surroundings.
Some of the views that you will enjoy will riding around the White Rim Trail include canyons, and
both the Colorado and Green rivers. If you are more into the challenge and adventure, you can
tackle the path within a day. But if you want to take your time and enjoy the scenery and wildlife in
the area, you can stretch the biking adventure to 3 or 4 days. Because it is a multiple-day trip, it is
highly advisable to have a vehicle come with you to carry water, food, camping gear, bike repair
tools and cooking equipment since open fires are not allowed.
The White Rim Trail is not very hard for seasoned mountain bikers. Some of the biggest challenges
presented by this trail are the climbs and the trail's total length. There are many rocky stretches in
the trail as well as deep sand. Expect little shade so make sure to hydrate well. Each day may
require you to drive and cycle at least 10 to 12 hours. So this trail is not suited for those who are not
in good physical condition. The trail becomes even more challenging in not so favorable weather
conditions. One of the most important rules while riding White Rim is to keep all vehicles and bikes
on roads.
Campgrounds are easy to find, and are located every couple of miles. But because of the number
adventure seekers who choose to complete White Rim Trail, you have to book camping spots well in
advance. The most popular camp sites have a waiting time of one year. The busiest time in
Canyonlands will be during spring and fall. During this period, the permits available may not be
enough for the total requests. There are a total of 10 camping areas with a total of 20 individual
campsites. The sites are not located near each other. Toilets are available in each area. Each site can
accommodation a maximum of 3 vehicles and 15 people.
To enter the Utah's Canyonlands National Park, you need to pay an entrance fee of $5 per individual
and $10 for each vehicle. The entrance ticket is valid for seven days, which give you plenty of time to
explore the White Rim Trail on your trusty bike. In order to ride the trail, you also need to acquire
the necessary permit from the National Park Service.
Mountain biking the White Rim Trail is not an easy feat by any means. It takes patience, dedication
and excellent physical condition. But it is also an incredible travel experience. The reward for your
effort is not just about finishing the track. The reward lies in your actual journey. For each mile you
bike, the park's gorgeous landscape unfolds itself magnificently before your eyes
