5. Export controls overview
Export controls are restrictions imposed by
governments on the tangible (physical) and intangible
(electronic) movement of certain goods, software and
technology across borders, and the provision of
technical assistance related to controlled items.
As a result of these restrictions, companies must
obtain approvals from the relevant national authorities
before exporting controlled goods, software and
technologies, or in some instances, before providing
technical assistance or services related to these items.

6. What is an export?
The term “export” may refer to any of the following:
• The physical export of a product across borders;
• Any oral, written or visual disclosure abroad;
• The sending or taking of tangible technology and software abroad; and
• The transmission of software or technology abroad by electronic media.
