A long history in the making

The first references of electric ship propulsion date back to the Twenties.
One of the most significant historical examples is represented by the Normandie.
When launched in 1932 Normandie was the largest and fastest ship in the world,
with novel design and lavish interiors.
This success was also due to our steam turbo electric propelled, 4 turbo electric
engines (160.000 hp – 200.000 hp max) it reached 32.2 (59.6 Km/h)
maximum speed.

The right converter solution

New target power levels are being forecasted and planned to magnitudes which
were up to a few years ago unthinkable.
According to this growing need NIDEC ASI supplies different types of electrical
converters for new power requirements in all kinds of vessels:

Silcopac

The Silcopac is a high performance digital thyristor
converter for industrial applications, particularly
suitable for marine solutions.

Main characteristics:

DC Solutions – Medusa Project

from the collaboration between NIDEC ASI and
Wartsila was born a new type of research vessel, the
MEDUSA project.
The Oceanographic and Fisheries research Vessel
(AGS) is a state-of-the-art design, built for world wide
Oceanographic service including Fishing and
Geological research, complying with ICES report 209
for underwater radiated noise control.
Scope Of Supply:
• LV main alternators
• Propulsion system with 2 x
1500 kW 0/185 rpm DC
motors coupled in tandem

Propelled by 3.000 kW low noise diesel-electric
propulsion, the vessel is equipped with one retractable
azimuth thruster and two tunnel thrusters. All of this
equipment will use NIDEC ASI motors.
The vessel is arranged for a number of fishery and
oceanographic research operations and will operate in
the Pacific Ocean offshore Chile.

DC Solutions - CEFAS Endeavour
Cefas Endeavour is an ocean-going fisheries
research vessel which is based at the port of
Lowestoft and is operated by the Centre for
Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science
(Cefas).
It is used to support all aspects of Cefas activities
from fish stock surveys to launching autonomous
monitoring equipment.
The vessel has been in service since 2003.
Scope Of Supply:
• LV main alternators
• Propulsion system with 2
x 1500 kW 0/185 rpm DC
motors coupled in tandem

Propulsion System with LCI
Typical Configuration

For those big vessels where propulsion powers ranging from 13 to 24 MW per shaft line are
required using synchronous motors, the most applied power converter type is the load
commuted inverter (LCI), or synchroconverter. The synchroconverter can be supplied with
12 or 24 pulse configuration depending on the ship’s electric network characteristics.

MV LCI Converter
Silcovert S

Silcovert S is an LCI Thyristor based drive which is
ideal for wide constant torque operation range
Main characteristics:
• High starting torque and wide constant torque
operation range
• High accuracy
• Four quadrant operation
• High immunity to any line and “flying restart” after
a supply voltage loss or dip
Power range: 1 – 65 MW
Output Voltage: Air cooling up to 4500 V – Water cooling up to 11000 V
Output frequency: 5 – 95 Hz

Silcovert S - Crane and pipelay Saipem 7000

The Saipem 7000 was conceived in the mid 1980s
as a multipurpose offshore oil platform installation
vessel that would be able to install very large oil
production platform decks (known as integrated
decks) as well as the decks' supporting structures
(known as jackets) using its two very large fully
revolving cranes.

Scope Of Supply:
• Electric propulsion system
• Winch system

It would also be able to support the offshore
completion of the platform by providing hotel and
workshop facilities for large construction crews.
Saturation Diving facilities would support subsea
connection work. The vessel's size and semisubmersible form would allow it to operate in
worse weather conditions than smaller and
conventionally shaped vessels.

Teliri is a cable ship for the laying and repair
of under water cables.

Its mission consists in telecom cable laying
and associated trenching operations, telecom
cable maintenance and ROV support.

variable frequency drive with

LV IGBT Technologies - De Poli, Gas tankers Marte & Venere

De Poli Tankers BV is a modern Dutch shipowning company based near the port of
Rotterdam, the Netherlands. De Poli is one of
the bigger commercial operator with a fleet of six
sophisticated IMO 2 chemical
tankers, two LPG tankers and one Ice classed
1A chemical/ethylene tanker.
The company expanded its fleet in 2004 with 2
LPG tankers of 3000 cbm. The De Poli gas
tankers meet the highest specifications in the
industry.

The Silcovert TN is a Neutral Point clamped Voltage Source
Drive with IGBT power devices and digital control for high
performance variable speed drives for induction motors.

• Easy integration into automation solutions with serial
communication capabilities, digital and analogue interface

Silcovert TN - Crane vessel Seven Borealis

Seven Borealis will measure 181 x 46
metres and with a depth of 16 metres. Its
draft will range between 7 to 11 metres.
The vessel is ship shaped, as opposed
to a semisubmersible design, and will be
able to perform a speed of 13-14 knots in
transit from one operating area to
another. Semisubmersible crane vessels
typically use at least twice the time.
Seven Borealis is designed to be used
for a range of operations, including
platform installation, deck installation,
spar deck installation, mooring
installation, subsea installation and
platform removal.

Silcovert TN - Pipelay vessel Saipem Castorone

Saipem PLV is a pipelaying ship. It is a
maritime vessel used in the construction of
subsea infrastructure. It serves to connect
oil production platforms with refineries on
shore.

vessel carries a heavy lift crane, used to

Johan de Witt is a Landing Platform Dock (LPD)
in use by the Royal Netherlands Navy. The main
mission of the Johan de Witt will be the transport
and disembarkation of a fully equipped battalion
marines to the objective area using organic
landing assets such as helicopters and landing
craft or existing port facilities.
With the required capabilities the ship is also
well suited for secondary missions such as
military sealift or disaster relief.

One of the most significant historical examples is represented by the Normandie. When launched in 1932 Normandie was the largest and fastest ship in the world, with novel design and lavish interiors.   • 10. Propulsion System: showcases DC Solutions – Medusa Project from the collaboration between NIDEC ASI and Wartsila was born a new type of research vessel, the MEDUSA project. The Oceanographic and Fisheries research Vessel (AGS) is a state-of-the-art design, built for world wide Oceanographic service including Fishing and Geological research, complying with ICES report 209 for underwater radiated noise control. Scope Of Supply: • LV main alternators • Propulsion system with 2 x 1500 kW 0/185 rpm DC motors coupled in tandem PPT2013.01.01.11EN Propelled by 3.000 kW low noise diesel-electric propulsion, the vessel is equipped with one retractable azimuth thruster and two tunnel thrusters. All of this equipment will use NIDEC ASI motors. Propulsion System: showcases DC Solutions - CEFAS Endeavour Cefas Endeavour is an ocean-going fisheries research vessel which is based at the port of Lowestoft and is operated by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas). It is used to support all aspects of Cefas activities from fish stock surveys to launching autonomous monitoring equipment. The vessel has been in service since 2003. Propulsion System with LCI Typical Configuration For those big vessels where propulsion powers ranging from 13 to 24 MW per shaft line are required using synchronous motors, the most applied power converter type is the load commuted inverter (LCI), or synchroconverter. Propulsion System: showcase Silcovert S - Crane and pipelay Saipem 7000 The Saipem 7000 was conceived in the mid 1980s as a multipurpose offshore oil platform installation vessel that would be able to install very large oil production platform decks (known as integrated decks) as well as the decks' supporting structures (known as jackets) using its two very large fully revolving cranes. Scope Of Supply: • Electric propulsion system • Winch system PPT2013.01.01.11EN It would also be able to support the offshore completion of the platform by providing hotel and workshop facilities for large construction crews. Saturation Diving facilities would support subsea connection work. De Poli is one of the bigger commercial operator with a fleet of six sophisticated IMO 2 chemical tankers, two LPG tankers and one Ice classed 1A chemical/ethylene tanker. The company expanded its fleet in 2004 with 2 LPG tankers of 3000 cbm. The De Poli gas tankers meet the highest specifications in the industry.   • 22. Propulsion System: showcases Silcovert TN - Crane vessel Seven Borealis Seven Borealis will measure 181 x 46 metres and with a depth of 16 metres. Its draft will range between 7 to 11 metres. The vessel is ship shaped, as opposed to a semisubmersible design, and will be able to perform a speed of 13-14 knots in transit from one operating area to another. Semisubmersible crane vessels typically use at least twice the time. Seven Borealis is designed to be used for a range of operations, including platform installation, deck installation, spar deck installation, mooring installation, subsea installation and platform removal.
