CITATION & REFERENCE LIST
Common practice
APA
APA (American Psychological Association) style
is most commonly used to cite sources within
the social sciences. This resource, revised
according to the 6th edition, second printing of
the APA manual, offers examples for the
general format of APA research papers, in-text
citations, endnotes/footnotes, and the
reference page.
CITATION
“Students often had difficulty using APA
style, especially when it was their first time”
You read this on page 19, in a book written by
Thomas Jones. The book is published by
Pearson International Limited, London in the
year 2001.
What are the ways to cite information
from the text?
Chomsky (2001) asserts that “Students often had difficulty using
APA style, especially when it was their first time” (p. 19)
@
He stated, “Students often had difficulty using APA
style, especially when it was their first time.” (Jones, 2001)
If you are quoting directly from the source you
will need to include the author, year of
publication, and the page number for reference
(preceded by “p.”)
Johan’s (2002) study found the following:
Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when
it was their first time citing sources. This difficulty could be
attributed to the fact that many students failed to purchase a
style manual or to ask their teacher for help. (p. 213)
Place direct quotations that are 40 words or longer
in a free-standing block of typewritten lines, and
omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a
new line, intended ½ inch from the left margin.
According to Jones (2001), APA style is a difficult citation
format for first-time learners.
@
APA style is a difficult citation format for first-time learners
(Jones, 2001, p.19)
If you are paraphrasing an idea from another
work, you only have to make reference to the author
and year of publication in your in-text reference.
You’re also encouraged to provide page number.
According to Jones (1998, as cited in Harrods, 2003), APA style
is a different citation format for first-time learners.
If you are paraphrasing an idea from another work
(and you saw a direct quotation from a primary
source in a secondary source text, you should be
acknowledging both
In-text Citations:
A Work with Two Authors
When citing a work with two authors, use “and”
in between authors’ name in the signal phrase yet
“&” between their names in parenthesis.
According to feminist researchers Raitt and Tate
(1997), “It is no longer true to claim that women's
responses to the war have been ignored” (p. 2).
Some feminists researchers question that “women's
responses to the war have been ignored” (Raitt &
Tate, 1997, p. 2).
In-text Citations:
A Work with Three to Five authors
When citing a work with three to five authors, identify
all authors in the signal phrase or in parenthesis.
(Harklau, Siegal, and Losey, 1999)
In subsequent citations, only use the first author's last
name followed by "et al." in the signal phrase or in
parentheses.
(Harklau et al., 1993)
In-text Citations:
A Work with Six and More Authors
When citing a work with six and more
authors, identify the first author’s name
followed by “et al.”
Smith et al. (2006) maintained that….
(Smith et al., 2006)
In-text Citations:
Organization
When citing an organization, mention the organization the
first time when you cite the source in the signal phrase or
the parenthetical citation.
The data collected by the Food and Drug
Administration (2008) confirmed that…
If the organization has a well-known abbreviation, include
the abbreviation in parentheses the first time the source is
cited and then use only the abbreviation in later citations.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

marks and italics as appropriate. For example, parenthetical
citations of the source above would appear as follows:

Two or More Works by the Same Author
Use the author's name for all entries and list the entries by
the year (earliest comes first).

• Two or More Works by the Same Author in the Same Year
