Six shifts in the business technology
environment are changing business models…
8
Work Adapts to Broader
Role for Machines
■ Automation and machine learning move
into more complex, less structured
activities.
■ Employees must demonstrate greater
judgment creativity, flexibility and
collaboration.
Example: Microsoft Botresolving customer
queries; Google Assistant making calls
Demand Grows More Personal
■ Customers seek services that align with
their preferences and values as individuals
(not segments).
■ Customers demand lower-effort, non-
intrusive service.
Example: Curve can provide a loan at the point
of need based on up to date credit score and
bank balance; Emirates improves client
experience by Facial & Voice recognition
Everything Accelerates
(Except Large Companies)
■ New capital-light competitors scale rapidly.
■ Demand changes at a faster rate.
■ Size, complexity, and regulation slow
incumbent responses.
Example: Many organisations face internal
hurdles to keep pace with Fintechs, aggregators
and XaaS providers.
■ Value creation shifts toward
information-rich services.
■ Companies facilitate or broker services
through an interface.
Example: Discovery Eco-system (Medical,
Lifestyle (Vitality), Card and Insurance)
Products Become Information-Rich
Services
Data Reliance Deepens
■ Customers rely on data, especially from
peers, for purchase decisions.
■ Managers and employees use data for
virtually every business decision.
■ Overabundance and uncertain veracity of
data make it harder to reach decisions
quickly.
Example: Uber, AirBnB, Amazon, Pocketslip,
Smartfunder
Internal and
External Boundaries Blur
■ Companies collaborate through open
models.
■ Functional boundaries and hierarchies give
way to fast-changing matrices.
■ Employees pursue flexible roles,
employment models and career paths.
Examples: Amazon: a big retailer, a media company, the
biggest cloud provider; Offer Zen and Root Bank

Technology Leadership in
Africa…changing Education, Our
children, our future…
• At the 2018 World Economic Forum, Jack Ma/Ma Yun (Alibaba) says
that only by changing education and our choices as parents and
leaders, can children compete with machines.
• Robots could replace up to 800 million jobs by 2030 (2018, McKinsey
Global Institute)
• Education in a digital and tech world is becoming a major challenge.
• If we do not change the way we teach, 10 years from now we will
be in trouble.
• The way we teach, the things we teach our kids, are the things from
the past 200 years. It is knowledge based.
• We cannot teach our children to compete with machines - they are
smarter.
• Teachers and Parents must stop teaching KNOWLEDGE...we have
to teach something UNIQUE, so a machine can never catch up
with us. Compare to the view “Coding as the 12th language in SA”?)

Technology Leadership in
Africa…changing Education, Our
children, our future…
• These are the soft skills we should be teaching our children:
• Values
• Believing
• Independent thinking
• Teamwork
• Care for others
• These are the soft parts of humanity that knowledge will not teach you.
• Audience Reflection –
How do we are Technology Business Leaders and societies, value these soft
skills?
• That is why I think we should teach our children :
• SPORTS,
• MUSIC,
• PAINTING,
• ART,
• HUMAN SCIENCES - to make sure humans are different.
• Everything we teach should be different from machines.
• If a machine can do it better, we need to re-think our approach.

Technology Leadership in
Africa…changing Education, Our
children, our future…
So, Mr Technology Leader –
what do you teach…your
children…your staff ?
Why do you teach it?
How do you teach?
How do you ensure the face of
humanity prevails in the Technology
of tomorrow, which is available
today?
How are you changing our country and
continent for the better?
And what is the legacy you leave
behind?
