Charities like KIVA.org have reached $100 million of loans since 2005. Others like Wikipedia have taken over Microsoft's encyclopedia Encarta and the Encyclopedia Britannica. How does it happen? Who are the gurus and what do they say? Join us for a concentrated session of social media tips, as well as who to follow and what to read. The training was delivered as part of the fundraising fair at the Directory of Social Change.

- Use social media to SHOW that you lead by example: this is the communication platform to show yourself transparently… I know scary but otherwise end up doing this:
- You can’t possibly come up with all the solutions by yourself: if you have problems and challenges, this IS what social media is about… not getting money. You’ll get money if it’s the real barrier, but most probably that’s not the first step: first ask people to help. If they like helping you, then they’ll be happy to give!

- Sun Microsystem’s ($11 billion in revenue!!) CEO blog. Jonathan Schwartz’s blog received about 400,000 hits a month (in 2006). It’s not the number of hits that make his blog a social media success, but the openness on it. Positive and negative comments are allowed, and even the most inane are approved. Transparency from the highest position in a company trickles down and increases trust from consumers.

- On 12 February 2009, 202 cities around the world held Twestivals, bringing together the Twitter community for an evening of fun and to raise money and awareness for charity: water. The total raised from the Global Twestival stands at $250,000 USD with numbers continuing to roll in. By organizing an event globally using Twitter as a driving force with additional information on Vimeo videos and Facebook pages, the event was able to provide clean water for over 17,000 people.
- At beginning of internet, no marketing. The banners and people went mad! Then Google and invention of AdWords... genius! Now what’s happening?
- Gowalla provided a tip from one of the three organizations involved in the telethon — the National Wildlife Federation, United Way, and The Nature Conservancy — about how to support the people, wildlife and environment being affected by the spill. More than 9,000 people received the Larry King pin in three days and the message to watch the Larry King Live telethon (combined with a tip on how to help) was viewed over 22,000 times.

- Social media can help us and others change our perspectives on things as we have a much faster and cheaper way of communicating. Skype just released a version in which you can video conference call for free… dimdim does free webinars, all social networks are free…
- And it allows for amazing things like the creative commons with the amazing Flickr that has over 4 billion photos, and Jamendo with 266,000 tracks… all free. All these tools are great, and that’s when I remember a friend who always used to tell me:
- “have a goal, don’t be a penguin!”
