I found out late on Christmas Day that Archbishop Emeritus Desmond
Tutu passed away. It seemed a strange way to finish out a day filled with
family, feasting, and celebrating the light and life of Jesus. I felt like a little
of that light had been extinguished with Bishop Tutu’s death.
I first learned about Bishop Tutu as the world began to struggle with the
system of apartheid in South Africa. Bishop Tutu was a voice who
consistently spoke from his Christian faith against the oppression and racism
that ruled South Africa. When apartheid finally came to an end, Bishop
Tutu’s Christianity provided another avenue of healing for a country that
was both filled with joy, but also seething with anger and resentment.
Bishop Tutu recognized that retributive justice would not produce a united
or healthy South Africa, so he helped design a system of truth and
reconciliation which proved instrumental in the early transition of
government and power.
After Apartheid came to an end in South Africa, Bishop Tutu broadened his
work in a tireless campaign for universal human dignity. He felt that the
teachings of Jesus compelled him to work for the rights of indigenous
people, for refugees, for oppressed peoples, and for the LGBTQ+
community. He believed that every human deserves the same love, respect,
acceptance, and rights because we are all God’s children.
As we start the New Year of 2022, we have learned that so much of life is
outside of our control. But when it comes to treating others with respect,
dignity, love, and acceptance; we possess sole custody of those choices and
decisions. For all that is to come, let us use every ounce of strength and
courage to live out the statement we adopted back in 2019:
NoHoFUMC is a community that practices the all-inclusive and
transforming love of God as modeled by the life and ministry of Jesus
Christ. We celebrate our diversity in race, ethnicity, marital status, sexual
orientation, gender identity, age, gender, ability, citizenship, and
socioeconomic status. Moved by the Holy Spirit, we welcome all people into
the full participation of the life of the church.
We may have lost a little of Christ’s light with Bishop Tutu’s passing…but I
believe we can shine brighter in our neighborhood to make up for it. Shine
hard everyone!
In Christ,
2. January 2 Alternate Routes Matthew 2:1-12
On Epiphany Sunday, we consider the Magi and the perceived threat to Herod that baby Jesus represented. When
speaking truth to power, sometimes we need to have a “Plan B” or choose an alternate route.
January 9 Bathwater
Have you ever wondered why Jesus submits to John’s baptism? As we explore Jesus’ baptism, we will
consider our own, and how it might be both a preparation for and an identification with who we were
created to be.
January 16
Wine Before It’s Time
John 2:1-11
We all have heard about how Jesus turned water into wine. But have we ever asked ourselves why? Or what it
might have signified? We won’t be serving wine, but come and learn a little more about willful submission to the
way of Christ.
January 23 Going Home Luke 4:14-21
Jesus goes home to Nazareth to begin his ministry of proclaiming the “Good News.” As we explore the nature of
Jesus’ “Good News,” who would you most want to hear it?
January 30 Leaving Home Luke 4:21-30
Prophets are never welcome in their hometown, and neither is Jesus. How do you respond when the “Good
News” isn’t for you? (Hopefully better than Jesus’ hometown!)

Sermon Series - “The Nature of Good News”
Have you ever stopped to consider what Jesus meant by “Good News”? Most Christians think the “Good News”
is about eternity in heaven and ignore the things Jesus spends more time talking about: equity, justice,
compassion, and mercy for the poor, the sick, the outcast and the forgotten.

It’s that time of year football fans! So here’s the game plan:
We are collecting cans of soup on January 16, 23 & 30 and on
Super/Souper Bowl Sunday, February 6 & 13!
Place your donations of soup in the BIN you think will WIN!
We will have collection bins available for each conference in the Main Sanctuary.
Help us collect 200 cans of soup and tackle hunger for the

Tonya's niece found out her unborn baby boy has a complicated heart defect and will need surgery
with his first week of life. He has what is called double outlet right ventricle (DORV) and interrupted
arch with a hole as well in the heart wall. Sounds like he will need medications most his life even after
the surgery(s) but can live a normal life unfortunately the hospital where they live doesn’t do this kind
of surgery so they have to go to Miami to deliver and do the surgery and recovery. They have to get
over there around the week of Christmas and could be there for 1-2 months.
Stephanie Griffin and her husband, Carlos, are in need of
prayers for their health. Stephanie has issues with severe
arthritis in her hip and a pinched nerve. Carlos has had a
messed up shoulder and issues with his cervical spine.
Patty Kelsey's cousin, Fran Tokahuta, lost her best friend, Row
Kinnear. Row was in remission with stage 4 ovarian cancer
but, sadly, the cancer returned and was aggressive. Fran's
brother (Patty's cousin), John, recently passed on in
September. Prayers of peace as Fran copes with another
tremendous loss.
Tiny Home Project - Donation Tally
$6000 - We doubled our goal!!!
Our donation of $6,000 was sent and received, by Hope
of the Valley Rescue Mission. Director, Ken Craft, sent a
message of heartfelt thanks for our continued
partnership and will let us know when our dedication
plaques are ready. Our gift of 2 tiny homes will support
4 people to get off the streets and under a roof, away
from the elements, bitter cold, and rain. Recipients of
these tiny homes, will also receive intake and support.
Our gift was also doubled by a Rescue Mission Donor,
making our total gift, valued at $12,000.
Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus.
