Where is faith found? To be sure faith is found in a wide variety of Holy writ,
covering many languages and cultures. Faith is both caught and taught through
lessons, doctrines and especially through song and proclamation during
worship. Land is consecrated and buildings are built for the purpose of such
teaching and gathering. However, is faith really found in an edifice or rather in
the spirit of the gathered community seeking to know God?
Dr. Samuel H. Dresner was a student of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. In a
book titled I Asked For Wonder/A Spiritual Autobiography, he compiles the
teachers thoughts on a wide variety of topics. In one titled “Faith Is a Blush”
he shares:
God
is unwilling to be alone,
and humans
cannot forever remain impervious
to what God longs to show.
Those of us who cannot keep their striving back
Find themselves at times
within the sight of the unseen
and become aglow with its rays
Some of us blush,
others wear a mask.
Faith is a blush
in the presence of God.
The Rabbi seems to imply, as the Prophets of Judaism insisted, that true faith
begins in knowing our need of God, and in such awareness, obtaining a touch
of humility which causes us to shine in the presence of Holiness. Remember
the story of Moses on Mount Sinai, receiving the Commandments. As he came
down the Mountain the people noted his face shone brightly for having been
near God. Moses was not in the Temple, and still the result of his encounter
with God stands today as a powerful symbol of the connection God has with
people.
It has been said that the most important act of faith one might perform
quite possibly will not take place in a Temple, Church, or Mosque; in
fact, it may well occur on the highway, in the supermarket, or at a
sporting event. We must be willing to broaden the horizon, and look
beyond Holy sites for faith expression and experience. When this occurs
the possibility of holiness happening simply causes us to shine.

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
May 4 - The Kelsey-Mottaz Announcement Team shared the May Announcements, trying to avoid using
“Star Wars Day” references of “May the 4th be with you,” failing miserably to the congregations
enjoyment! Pastor Joey shared a message based on Acts 2:14a, 36-41 titled “Driving Instructions” which
was about the acts of the early apostles. Communion was also served this morning.
May 11 - Today was Mother’s Day and all the women that came to church received a special gift. We all
witness a powerful and special moment when Elena Roya, who was raised Muslim and was baptized this
morning, converting to Christianity and also becoming a member of our church! Dan Doggett led the
choir in Jeff’s absence. The Men’s Chorus sang in honor of all Mothers as well. We had special music with
Shaun Vieten and Libeck Kadu. A moment with children was led by Patty Kelsey using an “Extraordinary
Paper Airplane.” Pastor Joey’s sermon, “Common Christians” was based on Acts 2:42-47.
May 18 - A Moment with Children was taught by Patty Kelsey about being grateful for what you are
given and not looking into your neighbors bowl unless you are making sure they have enough. Pastor Joey’s
sermon was called, “The Nectar of Kindness” which was based on 1 Peter 2:2-10. There was an
Administrative Council meeting held in Boyer Chapel following Fellowship that was very well attended.
Thanks to everyone who participated and were in attendance.
May 25 - We focused on the Imagine No Malaria campaign with Dr. Lancelot Lake sharing a impactful
Mission Moment on the subject of Malaria. To learn that Dr. Lake and his family have experienced
malaria first hand and Dr. Lake lost colleagues to the disease was disarming. The United Methodist
Church and UMCOR are determined to eradicate this disease in Africa by 2015! Our church has been
challenged to raise $1,000 for the cause. We raised $750.00 today! Pastor Joey shared his message on Acts
17:22-31 called, “God Has Left The Building.”

6. Many thanks to the talented, Roger Eshleman, who plays the beautiful organ and piano every Sunday
at 8:15 AM and 10:30 AM. Also, to Jim Wilkinson, for his lovely piano playing as well. On Sunday,
June 18th, we will be recognizing our wonderful Choir, Jeff & Roger, during 10:30
worship service. The choir will be taking a break from Wednesday night rehearsals and singing on
Sundays in a more casual dress for the Summer Season. No robes over church clothes for a few weeks!
Keeping it light and cool during the heat of Summer.
We welcome a new choir member this year, Elise Edie to our current members: Nylean Rapinac,
Dottie Vick, Monica McLaughlin, Jim Doggett, Ken Ellis, John Kent, Charles Minetree, Steven
Pitchford, Sandy Flemming, Kim Miller, Judy Palmer, Pauline Long, Larry Pines, Amy Schwartz,
David Eshleman, Dan Doggett, Lynne Hutton, and Wendy Ford.
Lynne Hutton is still working with our children and will be singing throughout the summer right after
worship. We ask for assistance from musicians, costumers and prop makers for an upcoming Christmas
Pageant!
If you would like to be a part of our choir, please let Jeff know. Also, many thanks to Julie Shuford for
the fun logo she created specially for Choir Recognition Sunday!
Our Choir, led by Jeff Thomas, continues to bless our
congregation every Sunday. They provide so much
during weekly worship and our high holy Seasons of
Easter, Advent and Christmas. We cannot thank the
choir enough for sharing their gifts with us!
The extra dedication that it takes to be a member of
the choir is appreciated by all of us and we thank
each member for sharing of their time, their passion,
their talents and spiritual gifts.
We are counting down to the funnest weekend in the universe! Kids will explore God’s infinite
love and practice down-to-earth ways to love each other! Kids will experience: Music & More,
Out-of-This-World Bible Adventures, Projects-With-A-Purpose, Have-a-Blast Games and a

7. IMAGINE NO MALARIA

Our Missions team is supporting the United Methodist Committee on Relief's (UMCOR) effort to end
Malaria. Our pledged is to give $1,000.00 to their Imagine No Malaria Campaign this year. On behalf of
the Missions Team I would like to share a special moment on the toll of malaria in Africa and give you the
opportunity to assist by donating to the “Imagine No Malaria” campaign which provides treated mosquito
nets and education to African communities.
When Patty requested If I could be a voice for this campaign, I agreed without thinking about way to say to
a congregation which I expect not many have seen the effects of Malaria. However, I consented to be a
voice for this campaign not only because Iʼve lived in the continent worst affected by Malaria, but I have
been a victim of Malaria, members of my family and my friends have suffered from Malaria and I have lost
colleagues who died suffering from severe Malaria. So what is this MALARIA ? Why should someone
“Imagine No Malaria” Why is the United Methodist Church Supporting this Campaign? Let me give you
some quick Facts about Malaria:
The US Center for Disease Control in Atlanta – Reports that Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal
disease caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of Mosquito which feeds on humans.
People who get malaria are typically very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness. Although
malaria can be a deadly disease, illness and death from malaria can usually be prevented. Malaria was
eliminated from the United States in the early 1950's.
Malaria is caused by the plasmodium parasite, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of the
female anopheles mosquito. This deadly pest flies and feeds at night (which is why bed nets are an
effective prevention tool). When an infected mosquito bites a person, the parasite enters the bloodstream
and heads for the liver, where it multiplies and re-enters the bloodstream, attacking and destroying red
blood cells. This infection causes severe symptoms. Typically, someone with malaria experiences a high
fever, chills, joint pain and a terrible headache. Left untreated, symptoms advance to convulsions,
vomiting, organ failure and ultimately…death.
The World Health Organization – WHO In March 2014: The WHO Reported that About 3.4 billion people
– half of the world's population – are at risk of malaria. In 2012, there were about 207 million malaria
cases (with an uncertainty range of 135 million to 287 million) and an estimated 627 000 malaria deaths
(with an uncertainty range of 473 000 to 789 000). Increased prevention and control measures have led to
a reduction in malaria mortality rates by 42% globally since 2000 and by 49% in the WHO African Region.
People living in the poorest countries are the most vulnerable to malaria. In 2012, 90% of all malaria
deaths occurred in the WHO African Region, mostly among children under 5 years of age.
NOTHING BUT NETS - ROLL BACK MALARIA and UN FOUNDATION MALARIA PARTNERSHIP – This
partnership is with the United Methodist Church and Lutheran World Relief, the UN Foundation leads a
faith-based initiative aimed at eliminating malaria deaths by 2015. This partnership has set an
ambitious goal of raising $200 million and engaging more than 20 million people in the fight against
malaria.
Malaria is 100% preventable and weʼve got a great plan to beat it! The United Methodist Church is using
nearly 200 years experience in Africa to work against malaria. This comprehensive approach is divided
into four main parts: 1. Prevention 2. Treatment 3. Education 4. Communication. We are putting in place a
system of accountability by establishing health boards in Africa, held responsible for stewardship of your
donation and results, We now have 12 trained health boards in 16 African countries. These boards will be
eligible to receive more funding from our partners like The Global Fund.
Can you Imagine No Malaria? Yes, WE CAN! By our donations, we can save lives! Thank you!

8. While we slid the boxes, other volunteers loaded the boxes with a paperback book, movie DVD,
handmade scarf, toiletries, a deck of cards, batteries, chapstick, etc., and at least one handwritten
thank you letter. Anita McChesney stayed in one place all morning affixing mailing labels to the
boxes. Pam Lippert did her service in the afternoon. Margaret Doggett assisted with the effort by
donating 9 scarves that she knitted. Some of the boxes prepared that day went to new Marine
recruits and the rest were headed to servicemen and women deployed overseas.
On Saturday our little group was surrounded by several hundred people from UCLA - students,
faculty, staff members and alumni. It is always heart-warming to see the many regular volunteers
with their blue Operation Gratitude t-shirts.
In December Operation Gratitude shipped the one millionth box since their campaign started in
2003. So far this year, nearly 100,000 boxes have been prepared and shipped as part of the Patriotic
Campaign centered around Memorial Day and Independence Day.

NH at the California Army National Guard
Armory in Van Nuys for an Operation Gratitude
assembly day. That morning first-timer John Kent
joined his wife Rosemary, Kim Miller, Wendy
Welch and Lynn Yoshizumi making about 15 trips
sliding large flat-rate USPS boxes along the
assembly line.
FUND-RAISING FOR THE NORTH HOLLYWOOD INTERFAITH FOOD PANTRY
Two Campbell Hall students, Ella Fox and Kyle Abrams, began volunteering at the North Hollywood
Interfaith Food Pantry (NHIFP) simply to fulfill their community service requirement for high school.
During their bi-weekly visits, they saw the familiar dedicated volunteers and heard the uplifting
stories of the people who benefited from this organization. These peoples' stories touched their
hearts, inspired them to return as often as possible, and led them to make a 90-second video about
the Pantry.
Posted on crowd-funding website, Indiegogo, their video has raised several thousand dollars for the
Pantry in just over one month. If you want to view the video, go to https://www.indiegogo.com/
projects/north-hollywood-interfaith-pantry-campaign#home. The campaign will end on June 20,
2014. You can donate to the Pantry at any time by putting cash or a check in the church offering
plate with a note that the money should go to the Pantry. If you prefer to donate by credit card, go to
the Pantry website, www.nhifp.org and click on the “Donate” box in the upper right hand corner.
Whatever way you donate, your money will be very much appreciated by the all-volunteer pantry and
the hungry clients that come on Monday and Friday mornings for a bag of food.

In conjunction with Big Sunday volunteer opportunities all over the area, North Hollywood United
Methodist Church of North Hollywood had 12 join us today at Malibu Creek State Park (or as we
found out, an adjacent area of the Santa Monica Mountain range nearby) to help with oak
restoration for the area. We got to feed young oaks with many buckets of water and remove non-
native plants threatening the oak tree growing area. The weather cooperated compared to the last
few days in the area, but those of us there definitely got a good sweat out of the work we did. It was
a good day to help Mother Nature!

• Jim Tyree’s Aunt, Virginia Clarkson, passed away on May 22nd after a long illness. Please lift up the Clarkson
family in Kentucky.
• Don Harold, Linda Eshleman's brother in-law, has a blood infection and pneumonia.
• Randy Harold, Linda Eshleman's nephew, had surgery on May 23rd for a hernia and to remove his gall
bladder.
• Please lift up Nancy Gatchell.
• Our newest member, Elena, is trying to figure out a way to stay with us so she can worship freely.
• Norman Kelsey's Mom, Pat Vail, is recuperating in a nursing home after a successful hip replacement and
pelvis reconstruction surgery.
• Julie Angello, friend of David Eshleman, is recovering from surgery to stop bleeding in her brain caused by
Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telagiectasia.
• Andy Merrill is recovering from open heart surgery at St. Joseph Hospital.
• Minette Harris fell on April 19th and broke her tail bone, she needs assistance with transportation.
• Frank Rapinac's cousin, Tom Turner, would like prayers about the growths on his throat. He would like that
the growths are benign and not malignant.
• Gary Iseminger, had to undergo emergency dialysis treatment. A kidney donor is desperately needed. He is O
blood type.
• Ozzy Villazon, has multiple myeloma. A cancer that attacks the bone and is metastasizing rapidly. His
insurance does not cover the chemotherapy he needs.
• Prayers for the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission as they rebuild and also for those touched by the Isla Vista
shooting.

Reflections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from
April 14, 2002 and Dr. McDonald’s sermon was titled “The Currency of Listening” based on Luke 24:13-35
My old sociology professor, Royal Marten, one of a long list of Texans I’ve come to know, love,
and respect, used to tell a story illustrating the importance of listening in communication. It
seems Royal had gone to a dance, and at the appropriate time approached a young woman
about a dance. Rebuffed in his efforts, he returned dejected to his seat, until he mustered the
courage to ask another. At intermission, the woman who refused to dance approached asking
to speak with him. She said, “Why did you ask me to dance then leave?” He said, I asked if
you would like to dance and you said no! She responded, “What I heard you say was, is this
dance taken?” and I said no.
Communication is truly an art. Far more than merely stringing words together in a coherent
fashion, or listening with rapt intent, real communication occurs when voice and ear along
with environment and circumstance combine to create understanding.
There is a story of an adolescent struggling with algebra. The student would frustrate the
math teacher asking for repeated explanations. In exasperation the teacher would in a raised
voice suggest that if the student would just think harder or truly apply effort, understanding
would come. What came of course was a fear and loathing of math.
In Luke 24:13-35, the Emmaus Road story, two disciples are walking from Jerusalem to
Emmaus and encounter a stranger (Jesus) who notes their sadness. He asks why they are down
and surprised they wonder why he doesn’t know about the life, ministry, and death of Jesus.
The stranger questions why they don’t believe the prophets telling of such events in scripture
then instructs them in all matter of faith. They come to a place where they are to part, but the
disciples ask the stranger in for a meal. As they break bread together, they realize it is Jesus and
he vanishes from them. Then they realized how powerful his teaching on the road had been,
and rush back to tell the others in Jerusalem.
Though we might wish it otherwise, the dialogue of modern faith is not much different.
Weariness followed by wonder, grace luring us forward in fits and starts. We need not speak
loud nor listen more intently, or think harder. If we move down the road with open hearts and
willing souls, revealed love will speak.
