Almost a year ago David Eshleman who grew up in this parish had lunch
with me.   Some of you may know that he has a Masters Degree in
Psychology, and is a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern
working toward his license.  During the course of conversation he asked
me what I was working on,  and I said I was working on a reflection about
Spiritual Hoarding   The following are some thoughts he shared based on
a seminar he attended led by Dr. Pam Kaczmarek called  compulsive
hoarding.
The key elements are as follows:
1.Information Processing (attributed to cognitive deficits with organizing,
problem solving, attention) 2. Beliefs about not wasting (i.e. children of the
depression) 3.
Emotional Dysregulation (can be associated with early
psychological trauma, other mental illness such as major depression, etc)
4. Emotional Attachment (to the hoarded item, belief, etc. i.e. reminds
someone of a special moment in their life and if they lose the item they
worry they will forget about that moment or it will be lessened)
The lecture goes on to state that 75% of people with hoarding disorder
also have a mood or anxiety disorder as well. Finally hoarding is no longer
considered an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but as a stand alone
disorder in its own category.
Tom Brokaw, newsman and author, wrote a book a while back titled The
Greatest Generation. It was based on interviews with those people who
survived the Great Depression and make huge sacrifices for the good of
the United States in America during World War II. Mr. Brokaw is the
offspring of this generation.   The axiom they lived by with regard to
earthly possessions was simple. “Use it up, wear it out, and never throw
anything away.” A decent motto to live by in modern parlance, it could be
said even Earth Friendly.  This becomes a problem only when folks cannot
let go of things.   There is a program on TV titled Extreme Hoarding
“Buried Alive”.   In each episode two or three people along with their
families try to deal with the difficulties of hoarding.  A clinician attempts to
guide people through the piles of stuff that have taken over their homes,
but to get to the root causes, be it loss, depression, or abuse for example.
Sometimes the work is successful, and truthfully in others it is not.  After
watching the program a few times the thought of a type of spiritual
hoarding came to mind.   These thoughts are not based on clinical
research, but on pastoral experience and observations.
(continued on inside cover)

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
May 3 - The Kelsey-Mottaz Announcement Team shared the May Announcements, wearing Chicago
Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers Jerseys! Pastor Joey shared a message based on John 15:1-8 titled “On
Bearing Fruit.” Communion was also served this morning.
May 10 - Today was Mother’s Day and all the women that came to church received a special gift. Bill
Varney took on lectern duties. Pastor Joey’s sermon, “Not A Suggestion,” was based on John 15:9-17.
May 17 - Bill Varney sat in the lectern this morning. Pastor Joey’s sermon was called, “Having Spiritual
Sight” which was based on Ephesians 1:15-23.
May 24 - Today was Pentecost Sunday. We shared in the joy of witnessing the baptism of Annabelle
Hazel Peat, the third of the Peat girls to be baptized by Pastor Joey. This morning’s message on John
15:26-27; 16:4b-15 was titled, “A Holy Nudge.”
Psalm 9:9-20
Mark 5:21-43
(continued from front cover)
A. Holding grudges saps spiritual energy. Most of us know someone who has held a grudge for years,
perhaps decades or more hating a friend or relative for sometimes the most petty reason.  Yet the Word of
Jesus in the Gospel of John says we are to love one another as Jesus has loved us.
B. We Judge one another harshly misrepresenting or misquoting the Bible outright. Some people claim it is
the right of the faith community to judge. Beginning with Matthew 7:1 the teachings of Jesus state
otherwise. “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make, you will be
judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.  Why do you see the speck in your
neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?” (Vv 1-3.)  Another interesting misquote is the
phrase “money is the root of all evil.”  The actual quote is from I Timothy 6:10 and reads “For the love
of money is the root of all evil.”
C. The idea that the Church must always be the same. Years ago I preached a Christmas Eve sermon
based on Luke 2:1-20. However, I used a modern translation in which swaddling clothes was translated
bands of cloth. The day after Christmas we listened to a message on the machine which had been left
late Christmas Eve by a clearly irate man saying in fact that by using said translation I had ruined his
Christmas tradition.  He left a number so I called and explained that Bands of Cloth were in fact
swaddling clothes according to the dictionary. He would have none of it.  For him there was only one
way to experience the Christmas story. For me, what this has to do with hoarding in a practical manner
is everything.  For when we hold on to dated, impractical, or untrue elements with regard to religious
thought and practice, spiritual lives become crowded and the clutter hinders growth.

REMEMBERING JIM WILKINSON
By Roger Eshleman
James (Jim) Wilkinson was born in Trenton, North Dakota on February 15, 1918 and heard Peggy Lee in
Fargo when he was a young man and before she became famous. He attended North Dakota Agricultural
College and was a member of the Oxford Club.  This was interrupted by the second world war.   He had
learned to fly in North Dakota and so became a C46 Cargo aircraft pilot as part of the war effort.  He flew all
over North Africa, parts of Europe and South America. He had one close call.
After the war Jim became an aerial photographer of test aircraft at Edwards Air Force Base.  Then he became
a Math Teacher at Van Nuys High School. He was beloved by his students and still did substitute teaching
until about 10 years ago.  As a hobby, Jim taught himself to play the piano. He was pianist for the Hand in
Hand Adult Sunday School class and for at least a dozen years participated in piano-organ duos with me
during the main service. He played on many occasions over the years and sang with the Men's Chorus.
He was also a collector and had two sizable collections -- one of cinema and film, the other of books and
papers on  President Teddy Roosevelt.  He was told this collection was  second only in size to the one  at
Harvard. It was dedicated to his mother who was from Medora, North Dakota and it now resides there at the
Medora Foundation.

Jim  was  a member of our church since 1962, and also a part of the Adult Singles, the Hand in Hand
Class,  and the Methodist Men  for many years.  This remarkable man  had  at least  three careers and two
significant avocations during his long lifetime.  His memory will linger on.
PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT
The VA of Greater Los Angeles is hosting a series
of connect days to provide crucial services to
ensure no man or woman who has served our
country is sleeping in the streets of Los Angeles or
in a shelter with their family. Supported by United
Way of Greater Los Angeles and leading
community partners, including government,
volunteers, non-profits, businesses, social service
providers, and faith-based organizations, connect
days will offer homeless individuals and their
families access to housing benefits in a single point
of entry.
The connect days will also aim to: Create a unique
opportunity for homeless citizens to access services
in a supportive community-type setting. Provide
the necessary connections for homeless individuals
and families to get started on the pathway of self-
sufficiency.
Our North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry is
hosting a Connect Day on Monday, June 8th from
10am-2:30pm at 4387 Troost Ave. Studio City.
The following documents may allow access to the
broadest range of potential resources four housing
and services day of:
*Valid State ID (or VA ID if absent)
*Social Security Card
*DD214 (must have for HACoLA)
*Proof of Income (award letters dated within 30
days and from all sources)
*Bank Statements (3 months current)
Marriage license (if married)
Proof of Custody (if separated)

our local community and to share what we can with
persons via NHIFP.
We enjoy sharing your success stories too (Scout
food drives, making PB&J sandwiches, Teen Pantry
volunteers, video fundraising, Netiya gardens, Food
Forward Fruit Picks). If you have an event, let us
know so we can also share it on our site, and help to
promote and support your efforts.

Reflections
! Joey K. "Donald
Reflections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from
July 1991 Good News Cover Letter and as a Reflection on May 20, 2007.
Dr. McDonald’s sermon was titled “Does Your Heart Need Reading Glasses?” based on Ephesians 1:15-23.
While driving home at night along the same route two nights in a row, I noticed something.
The second night everything seemed clearer.  The sky was bright from a full moon both times,
but the second time the sky, the lights, the buildings and even the cars around me all seemed
more in focus.  Then it occurred to me.  I had washed my car that day.  It is amazing how a
little work could make such a difference in the way I was seeing things.  Isn’t this equally true of
our spiritual lives?  If we take the time, make the effort, and do the work necessary, then our
self-understanding and our view of the beloved community is clearer.
Just as Moses went up a mount, John the Baptist went into the desert, Jesus went into the
wilderness, men and women of faith for centuries have drawn aside and done the work
necessary to obtain the long view of life.  While perhaps we can’t take the same tact as our
spiritual forebearers, we can occasionally pause and clean the windows of our lives so that the
light of creation might shine in.

Good News June 2015

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@pacbell.net June 2015 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.com IN THIS ISSUE: • Choir Recognition • Vacation Bible School • UMW Membership Tea • Remembering Jim GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Minerva Carcaño Bishop Rev. Dr. Cedrick Bridgeforth District Superintendent Dr. Joey K. McDonald Pastor Congregation Ministers Jeff Thomas Director of Music Roger Eshleman Organist Nylean Rapinac Administrator Patty Kelsey Director, Program Ministries Jessica Renslow Director, Outreach Ministries Almost a year ago David Eshleman who grew up in this parish had lunch with me.   Some of you may know that he has a Masters Degree in Psychology, and is a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern working toward his license.  During the course of conversation he asked me what I was working on,  and I said I was working on a reflection about Spiritual Hoarding   The following are some thoughts he shared based on a seminar he attended led by Dr. Pam Kaczmarek called  compulsive hoarding.   The key elements are as follows:   1.Information Processing (attributed to cognitive deficits with organizing, problem solving, attention) 2. Beliefs about not wasting (i.e. children of the depression) 3. Emotional Dysregulation (can be associated with early psychological trauma, other mental illness such as major depression, etc) 4. Emotional Attachment (to the hoarded item, belief, etc. i.e. reminds someone of a special moment in their life and if they lose the item they worry they will forget about that moment or it will be lessened)   The lecture goes on to state that 75% of people with hoarding disorder also have a mood or anxiety disorder as well. Finally hoarding is no longer considered an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but as a stand alone disorder in its own category. Tom Brokaw, newsman and author, wrote a book a while back titled The Greatest Generation. It was based on interviews with those people who survived the Great Depression and make huge sacrifices for the good of the United States in America during World War II. Mr. Brokaw is the offspring of this generation.   The axiom they lived by with regard to earthly possessions was simple. “Use it up, wear it out, and never throw anything away.” A decent motto to live by in modern parlance, it could be said even Earth Friendly.  This becomes a problem only when folks cannot let go of things.   There is a program on TV titled Extreme Hoarding “Buried Alive”.   In each episode two or three people along with their families try to deal with the difficulties of hoarding.  A clinician attempts to guide people through the piles of stuff that have taken over their homes, but to get to the root causes, be it loss, depression, or abuse for example.  Sometimes the work is successful, and truthfully in others it is not.  After watching the program a few times the thought of a type of spiritual hoarding came to mind.   These thoughts are not based on clinical research, but on pastoral experience and observations. (continued on inside cover)  A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOEY
  • 2. COME AND WORSHIP The following Bible passages will be the basis for the 10:30 messages in June. Please take time each week to read the selected passages. June 7 Think Thoughtfulness 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 June 14 Growing Hope Mark 4:26-34 June 21 A Safe Place June 28 A Healing Touch HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP May 3 - The Kelsey-Mottaz Announcement Team shared the May Announcements, wearing Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers Jerseys! Pastor Joey shared a message based on John 15:1-8 titled “On Bearing Fruit.” Communion was also served this morning. May 10 - Today was Mother’s Day and all the women that came to church received a special gift. Bill Varney took on lectern duties. Pastor Joey’s sermon, “Not A Suggestion,” was based on John 15:9-17. May 17 - Bill Varney sat in the lectern this morning. Pastor Joey’s sermon was called, “Having Spiritual Sight” which was based on Ephesians 1:15-23. May 24 - Today was Pentecost Sunday. We shared in the joy of witnessing the baptism of Annabelle Hazel Peat, the third of the Peat girls to be baptized by Pastor Joey. This morning’s message on John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 was titled, “A Holy Nudge.” Psalm 9:9-20 Mark 5:21-43 (continued from front cover) A. Holding grudges saps spiritual energy. Most of us know someone who has held a grudge for years, perhaps decades or more hating a friend or relative for sometimes the most petty reason.  Yet the Word of Jesus in the Gospel of John says we are to love one another as Jesus has loved us. B. We Judge one another harshly misrepresenting or misquoting the Bible outright. Some people claim it is the right of the faith community to judge. Beginning with Matthew 7:1 the teachings of Jesus state otherwise. “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make, you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.  Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?” (Vv 1-3.)  Another interesting misquote is the phrase “money is the root of all evil.”  The actual quote is from I Timothy 6:10 and reads “For the love of money is the root of all evil.” C. The idea that the Church must always be the same. Years ago I preached a Christmas Eve sermon based on Luke 2:1-20. However, I used a modern translation in which swaddling clothes was translated bands of cloth. The day after Christmas we listened to a message on the machine which had been left         late Christmas Eve by a clearly irate man saying in fact that by using said translation I had ruined his Christmas tradition.  He left a number so I called and explained that Bands of Cloth were in fact swaddling clothes according to the dictionary. He would have none of it.  For him there was only one way to experience the Christmas story. For me, what this has to do with hoarding in a practical manner is everything.  For when we hold on to dated, impractical, or untrue elements with regard to religious thought and practice, spiritual lives become crowded and the clutter hinders growth.  Your Friend, Pastor Joey

We cannot thank the choir enough for sharing their gifts with us! The extra dedication that it takes to be a member of the choir is appreciated by all of us and we thank each member for sharing of their time, their passion, their talents and spiritual gifts. REMEMBERING JIM WILKINSON By Roger Eshleman James (Jim) Wilkinson was born in Trenton, North Dakota on February 15, 1918 and heard Peggy Lee in Fargo when he was a young man and before she became famous. He attended North Dakota Agricultural College and was a member of the Oxford Club.  This was interrupted by the second world war.   He had learned to fly in North Dakota and so became a C46 Cargo aircraft pilot as part of the war effort.  He flew all over North Africa, parts of Europe and South America. He had one close call. After the war Jim became an aerial photographer of test aircraft at Edwards Air Force Base.  Then he became a Math Teacher at Van Nuys High School. He was beloved by his students and still did substitute teaching until about 10 years ago.  As a hobby, Jim taught himself to play the piano. He was pianist for the Hand in Hand Adult Sunday School class and for at least a dozen years participated in piano-organ duos with me during the main service. He played on many occasions over the years and sang with the Men's Chorus.    He was also a collector and had two sizable collections -- one of cinema and film, the other of books and papers on  President Teddy Roosevelt.  He was told this collection was  second only in size to the one  at Harvard. It was dedicated to his mother who was from Medora, North Dakota and it now resides there at the Medora Foundation.    Jim  was  a member of our church since 1962, and also a part of the Adult Singles, the Hand in Hand Class,  and the Methodist Men  for many years.  This remarkable man  had  at least  three careers and two significant avocations during his long lifetime.  His memory will linger on.

  • 8. Reflections ! Joey K. "Donald Reflections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from July 1991 Good News Cover Letter and as a Reflection on May 20, 2007. Dr. McDonald’s sermon was titled “Does Your Heart Need Reading Glasses?” based on Ephesians 1:15-23. While driving home at night along the same route two nights in a row, I noticed something. The second night everything seemed clearer.  The sky was bright from a full moon both times, but the second time the sky, the lights, the buildings and even the cars around me all seemed more in focus.  Then it occurred to me.  I had washed my car that day.  It is amazing how a little work could make such a difference in the way I was seeing things.  Isn’t this equally true of our spiritual lives?  If we take the time, make the effort, and do the work necessary, then our self-understanding and our view of the beloved community is clearer. Just as Moses went up a mount, John the Baptist went into the desert, Jesus went into the wilderness, men and women of faith for centuries have drawn aside and done the work necessary to obtain the long view of life.  While perhaps we can’t take the same tact as our spiritual forebearers, we can occasionally pause and clean the windows of our lives so that the light of creation might shine in.
