Living With the End in Mind
I remember reading an article by the great automotive writer and editor,
Peter Egan. He was reflecting on a time he was hitchhiking somewhere in
rural Mexico, probably in the early 70’s; when he was asked at a bus stop,
“Adonde vas gringo?”
The question hit Egan like a twenty pound sledge hammer. “Where are you
going?” is a simple enough question, but in that moment, it represented an
existential crisis that Egan hadn’t considered. His life had no direction, and
as they boarded the next bus, he began to reflect on exactly where he wanted
his life to go for the very first time.
So I ask you, “Where are you going?” The question is important.
Leadership experts say that successful strategic planning begins when you
know where you want to get to. In other words, good planning always begins
with the end in mind.
So, God gifted you with a life: one that begins with birth and one that will
eventually come to a completion at death…or does it? The Apostle Paul
cannot be any clearer in his belief that there is life beyond death. He speaks
of our resurrection body and of putting on immortality and imperishability
(1 Corinthians 15). He speaks of being with Christ (Philippians 1:23) being
better than life while the book of Hebrews says that we are surrounded by a
great cloud of witnesses.” (Hebrews 12:1)
If you believe that our final destination is with God, well, maybe we should
begin to order our lives with that end in mind? Maybe that means we should
be living in the “way” that Christ modeled for us?
Sunday, November 3, we will celebrate All Saints Sunday at the 10:30 AM
worship service with a special communion service that honors the “great
cloud of witnesses.” We will also have an All-Church Meeting after coffee
fellowship to vote on a re-organization of church leadership and about
joining the Reconciling Network of Churches. Pastor Steve will also give an
update on 2020 General Conference.
Lastly, Monday, November 4, 2019, is our Annual Charge Conference. We
are hosting our fellow Mission Area churches for this important meeting with
the District Superintendent. We hope you will make time to be here and
hear about the future of the UMC.
In Christ,
Pastor Steve

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
October 6th - Today, we celebrated World Communion Sunday! We were blessed to experience worship in a
number of languages through song and prayers. Hanna Sack shared a reading in German. Libeck Kadu read
Luke 17:5-10 in Taiwanese. Pastor Steve shared in both Spanish and English. Pastor Steve’s Sermon Series,
Faith Goals, began this morning with his sermon titled, Contentment. Pastor Steve led the sacrament of Holy
Communion and the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish. Following worship, a delicious multicultural luncheon took
place on the patio. We also enjoyed Manny’s Coffee and a wonderful time was had by all.
October 13th - This morning, Pastor Steve shared a children’s message and sermon based on Luke 17:11-19.
The moment with children was about using your words and thanking people that have done nice things for
you. Pastor Steve’s sermon, “Gratitude,” was Part 2 of 4 in his Sermon Series titled, Faith Goals. Our scripture
reader was Norman Kelsey. Eddy Faulkner shared his original song, “Beautiful.” We had two special roses on
the altar. The white rose was for Mildred Doyle who entered the church triumphant. The lavender rose was in
celebration of Jesse Boone and Casey Ellings’ engagement.
October 20th - Today was Laity Sunday where we had a wonderful variety of congregants leading all the
aspects of worship. Thanks to Patty Kelsey for facilitating. We are also grateful to the following people for
taking part in Laity Sunday: Phillip & Rachel Mottaz, Dr. Heemanshu Bhagat, Tonya Peat, Andrew Esposo,
Sherri Perry, and Patty Kelsey. The main message, “Our Role in His Play,” was shared by Jesse Boone and was
based on Romans 12:1-8. Special Music was performed by Norman Kelsey, who sang “Pressing On,” by Bob
Dylan. The Benediction Choral response was written and led by Charles Minetree. There was a special
presentation from Kathi Ellis, President of the United Methodist Women, awarding Dan Doggett with the
UMW Special Mission Recognition pin. Following our fabulous worship service, we enjoyed a Laity
Celebration Luncheon out on the Patio that was served by Tacos El Pau and Manny’s Coffee.
October 27th - Patty Kelsey shared a moment with children about Humility utilizing Dr. Seuss's story called,
“Yertle the Turtle.” Jesse Boone read scripture. Pastor Steve’s sermon, “Humility,” was based on Luke 18:9-14
and was final part in his Sermon Series, “Faith Goals.” We were blessed with special music from Jeff Thomas
and Libeck Kadu.

Tuesday Night Bible Study
December 3, 10 & 17
7:00 PM
Community Room

Historians credit Charles Dickens’ classic
Christmas novella A Christmas Carol with
singlehandedly reviving interest in celebrating
Christmas according to the old traditions. The
story continues to be a holiday treasure today,
and as the old traditions have succumbed to the
pressure of retail sales and the economy, maybe
it’s a good idea to revisit the tale in depth.
Most people do not realize that Dickens was a
committed Christian who wrote the day before
he died, “I have always striven in my writing to
express veneration for the life and lessons of our
Savior.” So this year, we will use A Christmas
Carol as a doorway into scripture and the
Christmas story as we prepare ourselves to
celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with warmth
and joy. You will need a copy of A Christmas
Carol and a modern translation of the Bible.
I hope you will join in at 7:00 on
Tuesday evenings!

Good News November 2019

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@pacbell.net NOVEMBER 2019 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.org IN THIS ISSUE: • Trunk or Treat Success • Outdoor Market • Service Sunday • 22nd Annual Treelot • NHIFP Thanksgiving Eve • Advent Bible Study GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Rev. Grant Hagiya Bishop Rev. James R. Powell District Superintendent Rev. Steven F. Peralta Senior Pastor Congregation Ministers Jeff Thomas Director of Music Roger Eshleman Organist Nylean Rapinac Administrator Patty Kelsey Director, Program Ministries Tonya Peat Director, Outreach Ministries Living With the End in Mind I remember reading an article by the great automotive writer and editor, Peter Egan. He was reflecting on a time he was hitchhiking somewhere in rural Mexico, probably in the early 70’s; when he was asked at a bus stop, “Adonde vas gringo?” The question hit Egan like a twenty pound sledge hammer. “Where are you going?” is a simple enough question, but in that moment, it represented an existential crisis that Egan hadn’t considered. His life had no direction, and as they boarded the next bus, he began to reflect on exactly where he wanted his life to go for the very first time. So I ask you, “Where are you going?” The question is important. Leadership experts say that successful strategic planning begins when you know where you want to get to. In other words, good planning always begins with the end in mind. So, God gifted you with a life: one that begins with birth and one that will eventually come to a completion at death…or does it? The Apostle Paul cannot be any clearer in his belief that there is life beyond death. He speaks of our resurrection body and of putting on immortality and imperishability (1 Corinthians 15). He speaks of being with Christ (Philippians 1:23) being better than life while the book of Hebrews says that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.” (Hebrews 12:1) If you believe that our final destination is with God, well, maybe we should begin to order our lives with that end in mind? Maybe that means we should be living in the “way” that Christ modeled for us? Sunday, November 3, we will celebrate All Saints Sunday at the 10:30 AM worship service with a special communion service that honors the “great cloud of witnesses.” We will also have an All-Church Meeting after coffee fellowship to vote on a re-organization of church leadership and about joining the Reconciling Network of Churches. Pastor Steve will also give an update on 2020 General Conference. Lastly, Monday, November 4, 2019, is our Annual Charge Conference. We are hosting our fellow Mission Area churches for this important meeting with the District Superintendent. We hope you will make time to be here and hear about the future of the UMC. In Christ, Pastor Steve
  • 2. SERMON SERIES: LIVING WITH THE END IN MIND November 3 Come What May 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 November 10 Means of Grace Luke 19:1-10 November 17 Keeping the End in Mind Luke 21:5-19 November 24 Will You Remember Me? HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP October 6th - Today, we celebrated World Communion Sunday! We were blessed to experience worship in a number of languages through song and prayers. Hanna Sack shared a reading in German. Libeck Kadu read Luke 17:5-10 in Taiwanese. Pastor Steve shared in both Spanish and English. Pastor Steve’s Sermon Series, Faith Goals, began this morning with his sermon titled, Contentment. Pastor Steve led the sacrament of Holy Communion and the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish. Following worship, a delicious multicultural luncheon took place on the patio. We also enjoyed Manny’s Coffee and a wonderful time was had by all. October 13th - This morning, Pastor Steve shared a children’s message and sermon based on Luke 17:11-19. The moment with children was about using your words and thanking people that have done nice things for you. Pastor Steve’s sermon, “Gratitude,” was Part 2 of 4 in his Sermon Series titled, Faith Goals. Our scripture reader was Norman Kelsey. Eddy Faulkner shared his original song, “Beautiful.” We had two special roses on the altar. The white rose was for Mildred Doyle who entered the church triumphant. The lavender rose was in celebration of Jesse Boone and Casey Ellings’ engagement. October 20th - Today was Laity Sunday where we had a wonderful variety of congregants leading all the aspects of worship. Thanks to Patty Kelsey for facilitating. We are also grateful to the following people for taking part in Laity Sunday: Phillip & Rachel Mottaz, Dr. Heemanshu Bhagat, Tonya Peat, Andrew Esposo, Sherri Perry, and Patty Kelsey. The main message, “Our Role in His Play,” was shared by Jesse Boone and was based on Romans 12:1-8. Special Music was performed by Norman Kelsey, who sang “Pressing On,” by Bob Dylan. The Benediction Choral response was written and led by Charles Minetree. There was a special presentation from Kathi Ellis, President of the United Methodist Women, awarding Dan Doggett with the UMW Special Mission Recognition pin. Following our fabulous worship service, we enjoyed a Laity Celebration Luncheon out on the Patio that was served by Tacos El Pau and Manny’s Coffee. October 27th - Patty Kelsey shared a moment with children about Humility utilizing Dr. Seuss's story called, “Yertle the Turtle.” Jesse Boone read scripture. Pastor Steve’s sermon, “Humility,” was based on Luke 18:9-14 and was final part in his Sermon Series, “Faith Goals.” We were blessed with special music from Jeff Thomas and Libeck Kadu. Luke 23:33-43

  • 6. Tuesday Night Bible Study December 3, 10 & 17 7:00 PM Community Room   Historians credit Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas novella A Christmas Carol with singlehandedly reviving interest in celebrating Christmas according to the old traditions. The story continues to be a holiday treasure today, and as the old traditions have succumbed to the pressure of retail sales and the economy, maybe it’s a good idea to revisit the tale in depth. Most people do not realize that Dickens was a committed Christian who wrote the day before he died, “I have always striven in my writing to express veneration for the life and lessons of our Savior.” So this year, we will use A Christmas Carol as a doorway into scripture and the Christmas story as we prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with warmth and joy. You will need a copy of A Christmas Carol and a modern translation of the Bible. I hope you will join in at 7:00 on Tuesday evenings! The 22nd Annual Christmas Tree Lot This year, the lot opens November 29th! We are in need of Elves to sign up for the following positions: Greeter Elf, Dispatch Elf, Tree Handler Elf, Tree Loader Elf, Cashier Elf, and Dinner Elf. There are also community service, volunteer positions for the Scouts, Wesley Students, and the YMCA Youth & Gov’t Elves. The tree lot is open and shifts are available on Friday - Sunday beginning November 29th - December 15th. That is just 9 days tree lot sales! Don’t forget set up, load in, and organization days! *We need a large number of volunteers that are physically able to lift and carry trees! Fridays - 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM Saturdays - 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM Sundays - 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM Tree Lot Set Up Day Saturday, November 23rd 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Meet in front of the Lounge *Tree Delivery Day Friday, November 29th Time: TBD *Tree Lot Organization Day TBA Grand Opening Day Saturday, November 30th 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM Sign up online by going to our website or to our eblast. www.nohofumc.org
