Dear Matthew
20:20 Programme - Tuesday 14 June 2005
Thank you very much for agreeing to speak again this year to the 20:20 group on
Tuesday 14 November 2006 at No 10 DowningStreet. Your support and time is much
appreciated. The timing will be 14.15 <-15,30 pm. As agreed with you, Simon Marys
and Ruth Turner will also be taking part in this session. Iwas grateful to you whenwe
met for your suggestions as to how we our delegates could get the mostfrom this
meeting andI have used these suggestions to setoutbelow thestructure I am
proposing. I have also attached the list of participants and a copy of the full
programme.
Just to remind you, 20:20 is both for graduatesof CommonPurpose programmes and
other senior decision-makers who have a regional, UK-wide, European or international
role. It hastwo main themes - governanceandwealth creation andis designed to give
the participants an understanding of the majortrends that will influence Britain and
Europe over the next 20 years as well as an understanding of howthe UKworks.
One of the key aims of the week is to give the 20:20 group an insight into how
government and how, in particular, the central government machine actually works. On
Monday 12 June, they will have had input from the new Director of DEMOS Madeleine
Bunting, and from Sir Richard Mottram fromthe Cabinet Officeon howthe civil service
works.
What I am after for the visit into No 10is an insight into what is happening at the centre
of government with regard to long-term strategic thinking, policy and delivery. Priorto
the meeting ) will have asked the participants to consider what they realty want to find
out that they don't already know. The group will have had some time to pull their
thoughts together and Iwill askfor 3 volunteersfromthe group to act as interlocutors.
To start the ball rolling I will ask you. Ruth andSimon to introduce yourselves and to
briefly outline your role and perhaps the one thing you think is keyfor the ruling
government over the next year, I will then askthe three participants to start the bait
