Slide 5 How SMEM started. In February 2010 a small group in New Mexico met Virtually to see if they could bring together Volunteers to assist Emergency Management. Crisis Camps, Bar Camps, Ignite, TEDx forums were already being used but within the State nothing had been formalized. Including the tech community, volunteers, and engaging citizenry was discussed. By Fall with emerging events and more momentum it became more formalized and a discussion ensued. The tag #SMEM evolved out of a brainstorming session and an idea off of a Pirate Pad. #EMCampNM WIKI http://emcampnm.wikispaces.com/+Home+ Facebook http://www.facebook.com/EMCampNM @emcampnm Bridging Social Media and Emergency Management in New Mexico

Slide 6 All ways of Communication – In my area 40% use the internet, whether for religious reasons, financial concern, or accessibility issues. So you have know your areas and how your community likes to receive their information. If the satellites are out it won’t matter. Myth that phones are always out. We're seeing now that, in the wireless world, the ability for those providers to get up and running...
It is actually greater than it was in many of our experiences in previous disasters in the U.S.
We had people on the ground the day after Haiti that, as they hit the ground, could do text messaging.

Slide 7 Changing how we Communicate, that is what’s happening now. How are we getting data, who are we getting data from, what do we do with it and how do we manage. Pulling information, listening to and engaging the crowd, crowdsourcing

  • I agree, the 'blank slides' actually are sound clips or wmv files that would not transfer or could not be converted to this format. Deleting the slide on uploading would have deleted the content on the original and if I had made a copy minus the slides the presentation transcript would not have made sense. Not many options for slide share.

  • Thank you for sharing, it would have been a nice presentation only if there were no blank slides.
