6. Do an Ethics Check
Is it legal to rip your legally owned DVDs to your iPad?
Yes, and No
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA U.S.) says
it’s illegal to create and distribute the software to
circumvent copy protection on DVDs
But Judges have ruled that it’s not illegal to back up your
DVDs or move the content to an iOS device
Oddly the Audio Home Recording Act which amends
U.S. Copyright law does make it legal to rip audio
Fair Use argument doesn’t explicitly allow DVD ripping
You decide...

7. Terminology
Rip: Copying the contents of a CD (e.g. a song) or DVD
(e.g. a movie) to a computer so you can listen/view
Burn: Copying a file (can be data, song or video) from your
computer to a CD or DVD
Encode/Transcode: to take a video/audio file and convert it
to a different format, e.g. uncompressed wav file to mp3, or
DVD vob file to mp4
Compress: to remove information the human ear/eye can’t
perceive in order to shrink the file size - may reduce quality
Digital Download: Digital copy of a DVD/CD made available
by the publisher to download from the internet or copy
from the DVD to your computer for viewing/listening

8. What’s Wrong with Digital Downloads?
Movie companies put so many
restrictions that they often
won’t work on the device(s)
you have
Often can only have one copy
(choose between computer
and iPad)
Often have EXPIRATION
dates!
What’s that even MEAN?
Bought this Sony DVD in
Dec 2011, expired Dec 2010!

11. DVD Ripping Applications
Because of the DMCA all surviving DVD ripping
applications are free - if they charge, they’re shut down
So beware of paid-for DVD ripping applications
Our preferred freeware DVD ripping application is
HandBrake from handbrake.fr
Open Source (Licensed under the GPL)
Cross-platform Mac, Linux and Windoze
Works up through Mountain Lion
Requires a separate library to remove the copy
protection (complex to explain, easy to install)
Handbrake takes advantage of multi-core computers

12. Things to Think About
Make sure you have sufficient disk space
Ripped DVDs will take up a few GB on your drive
Capture tools like Handbrake will encode and
compress the video
Compression will be by a factor of 5 or more
Wallace and Gromit compressed from 6 GB to 1GB
for 3 short movies

13. What about Ripping Blu-Ray?
Steve Jobs in 2008: “Blu-ray is a bag of hurt”
He was right
No Mac has a Blu-ray player/burner preinstalled
Apple says they never will
Need to buy a Blu-ray burner - compatible with the Mac
Applications to capture Blu-Ray are more limited, no
many good/free tools
Process is more complicated, REALLY time consuming
and expensive
These are not the Droids you’re looking for...

14. Let’s Rip!
Load your DVD into your Mac’s DVD slot
We’ll use Wallace and Gromit as the demo
Usually the DVD Player application will auto-launch the
movie, go ahead and quit the application
I know it’s hard, but stop watching the movie

15. Choose the Source
Open Handbrake and click on Source

Sunday, November 25, 12 11
16. Choose Your DVD
Navigate to and open your DVD
You should see at least one VIDEO_TS folder
Click the Open button

17. Handbrake Scans the Source
Be patient as Handbrake begins to scan the new source
http://podfeet.com
Sunday, November 25, 12 13
18. Scanning...and Scanning
Should start to show you how many titles it’s found
http://podfeet.com
Sunday, November 25, 12 14
19. Done Scanning!
After scanning is complete, Handbrake will show the
duration of each chapter (called title) in the movie

20. It Gets a Little Tricky Here
DVDs often have a lot of different “titles” on them
Main feature
Alternate endings
Director’s cut
Director’s commentary
Trailers
Cutting room floor
Even the menus are considered a title
We’re going to have to decipher which we want to rip
and move to our iOS device
http://podfeet.com
Sunday, November 25, 12 16
21. Example with Wallace and Gromit
In Wallace and Gromit there are three main features plus
a whole bunch of other stuff
Using clever deduction, we can assume the longest ones
are the main features
Title 1 - 22m 42s
“The Wrong Trousers”
Title 2 - 28m 51s
“A Grand Day Out”
Title 3 - 29m 52s
“A Close Shave” (our favorite)
Titles 4 – 25 - (DVD menus and bonus material)

22. But Which One Should I Rip?
This is entirely up to you
If you’re like me, you want the smallest possible file
so you don’t fill up your iOS device so I just do the
main feature
If you’re a crazy movie nut, you may want ALL the
features
http://podfeet.com
Sunday, November 25, 12 18
23. Renaming the Files
We’ll queue up ripping of the three main features in
Wallace and Gromit
HandBrake auto-create a name for the output video file
Based on the name of the DVD
If you’re queuing more than one Title, change the name
or the output file and/or its destination by selecting the
browse button
http://podfeet.com
Sunday, November 25, 12 19
24. Renaming the File
First feature is called “The Wrong Trousers”
Renaming the file and putting it on the desktop

Sunday, November 25, 12 20
25. Add to Queue
We want to rip all three features at once
So we can go have a cocktail while our Mac works
After naming the file
Click on Add to Queue
You can Show Queue to see each of the files when
they’re ready to rip...but don’t start yet!

26. Choosing Presets
In the “old days” it was a lot of work to figure out what
dimensions and compression you should use for your
devices
Now you just pick your device from a the Presets menu!
Output settings will all be
adjusted to optimize the
video for your device
http://podfeet.com
Sunday, November 25, 12 22
27. Don’t Touch the Settings
You can manually adjust the video output settings,
but do this only if you know what you’re doing
And you have too much time on your hands

Sunday, November 25, 12 23
28. Now You Can Let ‘er Rip
Handbrake will scan again, then start encoding
Watch
% Encoding
progress
Watch ETA
Sit back, relax,
and go get that
cocktail!

30. Transfer Movie to iTunes
Find your movie where you told Handbrake to put it
Drag the movie into your iTunes Library
iTunes will put it in Movies automatically
http://podfeet.com
Sunday, November 25, 12 26
31. Sync to iDevice
Plug in your iDevice and select it in the left sidebar
Select the Movies tab
Check the box
for Sync Movies
Might want to
UNcheck auto
inclusion of all
moves for space
reasons
Check the box next to the movie you just pulled in
Sync your iDevice and be happy
http://podfeet.com
Sunday, November 25, 12 27
32. Delete the Original
Dragging the movie into iTunes from your hard drive will
put a copy in your Movies folder on your Disk
Might want to verify it’s there - look in
~/Music/iTunes 2012/iTunes Media/Movies
It’s now safe to delete the original to save disk space
http://podfeet.com
Sunday, November 25, 12 28
33. Or...
You could just buy your movies through iTunes

34. Links and Thanks
Handbrake is free from handbrake.fr
Many thanks to Steve Sheridan for working out the
workflow on ripping DVDs
And writing up most of the notes!
