Wave of Popularity for Cosmetic Surgery
1. Wave of Popularity for Cosmetic Surgery
The universal desire to look good seems to be firmly entrenched on the desi shores
Flawless skin and perfect facial features are no longer limited to just celebrities and the elite.
With Indians becoming increasingly conscious about their appearance, cosmetic procedures are
at an all time high in the country. The budding middle class no more shies away from getting
under the knife, and the universal desire to look good can now be fulfilled by a simple nip here
and a tuck there.
Owing to changing perspectives of people and growing demand, cosmetology has developed
and the sector has developed into a full-fledged industry that has witnesses accelerated
growth. According to a global survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery,
India ranks among the top five nations for cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures. Once
labeled as a 'high class hangover' in tier 1 cities, cosmetic surgery has reached the middle class
in cities such as Jaipur too. Reasons for this sudden boom vary from easy access to technology,
availability of affordable options, less time consuming and minimal post-operative care.
The age profile of patients coming for various cosmetic surgeries is also falling. Usually, men
and women in their late 20s and early 30s were the major customers of cosmetic surgery, but
nowadays, more and more teenagers are approaching cosmetic/ aesthetic surgeons for facial
corrections. While the clients in their 30’s have more money to spend, the younger generation
is more aware and is more open to new treatments. The ratio of women and men is 70:30 and
procedures range from facial hair removal to scar revision to rhinoplasty (nose job) to
gynaecomastia (male breast reduction) to breast reduction to augmentation (in girls).
With cut-throat competition for jobs, young men and women are leaving no stone unturned to
showcase their best foot forward. Right from removal of an accident scar mark to improvement
of a crooked nose, more and more patients are coming for a change in facial appearance to
create a good first impression at interviews.
Studies have shown that cosmetic deformities have a deep impact on a person’s psychology,
which is evident in their refusal to participate in public events and in some cases; they even
suffer from severe lack of confidence. A growing consciousness of looks is a major contributor
to the widening horizon of these surgeries from metros cities to the entire nation.
2. Cosmetic treatments are offered through two different categories of invasive (surgical) or non-
invasive (non-surgical) procedures. Invasive procedures involve radical measures taken to alter
the appearance of a patient. Some of the most sought after cosmetic surgical procedures are
breast enlargement, rhinoplasty (nose surgery), surgical face-lifts, tummy tucks, and
liposuction.
Minimally invasive procedures have overtaken surgical procedures due to lower cost, shorter
duration and lesser recovery time associated with the former. Some of the main non-surgical
cosmetic procedures are non-surgical face lifts, botox treatment, derma fillers, instant teeth
brightening, ultrasonic lipolysis, chemical peels, abdominoplasties (tummy tuck), nose surgeries
and body contouring.
Even as the demand for cosmetic correction, increases and the age limit of patients goes down,
counseling before a session remains utmost important. Getting under the knife should be a
conscious and mature decision.
As new aesthetic surgery technology and products are introduced in India, popular surgeries
become safe, and affordable, small towns will no more remain far behind than metros when it
comes to beauty makeovers.
