Scholarships for Engineering Students
• When the financial pressure is on….
Talk to advisors and be proactive about funding your
education.
If you must use loans borrow only what you need!
Inform yourself fully about what it will take to meet
your financial obligations when you graduate.
Do what you need to do to stay in school and get good
grades even if you must attend part time.
Is it worth it????
Educational Attainment in the U.S.
Beat the odds!
!
• Earn a Bachelors degree…
– You will have more formal education
than 71% of the US population
• Masters degree…
– You will have more formal education
than 90% of the US population
• PhD or Professional degree…
– You will have more education
attainment than 97% of the US
population
U.S. Census Bureau News, U.S. Department of Commerce
Educational Attainment in the United States:2013
Economic Value of a College Degree
Average US Salaries for Adults age 18
and older
Advanced degree $83,144
Bachelors degree $58,613
High School Diploma $31,383
Less than a High School Diploma $21,023
The value of a college degree is even more
pronounced in many other countries!
U.S. Census Bureau News, U.S. Department of Commerce
Educational Attainment in the United States:2010
Economic Value of a College Degree
Unemployment rate for Adults
age 25 and older
Doctoral or Professional degree 2.3%
Masters degree 3.4%
Bachelors degree 4%
Associate’s degree 5.4%

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor
Earnings and Employment Rates by Educational Attainment :2013
Engineering Salaries
• Top salaries for engineering
graduates –
In 2012, the mean salary for all occupations
was $45,790 while that for S&E was $87,330
Those in Science and Engineering account for
only 4.8% of total U.S. employment.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that
2.3 million new engineers will be needed in
the next ten years!
Social Value of a College Education
Macro to Micro and Everything in between!
Higher levels of education for a larger and more diverse
segment of the population can profoundly influence the
economic, cultural, environmental and social future our
world.
Education provides opportunities to directly improve quality
of life for individuals, families and communities.
Better educated individuals live longer and enjoy better
health.
‘The Center for Disease Control reports that the average life expectancy
for 25 year olds who earned a bachelors degree is almost nine years
longer than those who did not have a high school diploma.’
Annual Report on Health in the United States, May 2012
Education is a Privilege which carries a social
responsibility.
“Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education.”
