Career Development A responsible professional will always be prepared for the next career
opportunity. I have always made it a priority to keep my resume updated and to stay proactive in
considering my next career move. New experiences, education, achievements, and networking
relationships present opportunities for resume improvement. Staying current on external job
listings and networking internally are two ways to ensure that I do not miss out on an opportunity.
In addition, interview practice is invaluable in improving body language and in anticipating and
preparing for difficult questions. In my experience, the prepared candidate will always have an
edge. The Job Search The job search was helpful in confirming my current career strategy and
brainstorming new approaches after I graduate. First, I found the suggestion of setting a specific,
measurable, attainable, relevant, and trackable (S.M.A.R.T) goal to be extremely helpful. One of
the challenges that I face is that Eugene, OR, is not a large city and the healthcare opportunities are
limited. I already work for Peacehealth, the largest healthcare organization in Eugene. For this
reason, I need to be patient and careful in my job search since our family is planning on staying

Before I took Career Development, I did not know where to start researching colleges. Choosing

it is many years of hard work. He graduated with a BS in Psychology and hadn't planned on going

My selected mentor is Jerry Martin RN, BSN. He is a co–worker that has inspired me to return to
school and that any dream is obtainable. Jerry has a degree in biology and was working as a ward
clerk in our ER when I met him. He has a degree in biology and worked in finance before working at

Career development based on a Sears definition is unique because it empowers individuals to
explore a wider range of opportunities. It enables someone like me to consider being a college
counselor and someone like Ms. Angeles to consider being a high school principal. From our
school perspective this is beneficial because we need to find capable people that don't always fit a
prototypical teaching career pattern.
I believe a key ethical consideration for someone working in career counseling is avoiding the
trap of being too directive in counseling. As stated in principle 3 we must respect our client's right
to "choose their own directions" (textbook, p. 30). I pride myself in being a very analytical thinker
and always being able to come up with the right solution to a problem. It is very easy for me to
analyze a student's skills, interests and abilities and then come up with what I think the right career
