Textual Analysis The Crucible The text which I have chosen to analyse is from the play The
Crucible by Arthur Miller, just looking at Act One of this play. In Act One the scene opens in
Reverend Parris's house, in the year of 1692; the scene focuses on Betty being 'ill' in bed and
'laying limp', showing the powerful forces, they believe to be witchcraft has overcome her. This
extract highlights the importance of the themes that are throughout the play and the ideas of
townspeople's lives in Salem, in which the characters portray. This play is set in a theocratic
society, where the church and the state are one, and where the religion is strict and shapes their
beliefs. Within this Act the narrator describes Salem town as having a strict Puritan way of life
with an outlook on the rest of the world as one of "parochial snobbery". One of the most important
themes to look at in The Crucible is hysteria. The hysteria is tearing the Salem community apart, it
creates people's fear of their neighbours and they believe that friends and even family are
committing unbelievable crimes of witchcraft and communicating with the devil. To highlight the
theme of hysteria we can see how Tituba is [terrified] and [falls to her knees]; in which she is full

The Crucible Essay The Crucible was a very emotional book in terms of plot. The plot was about
a girl named Abigail who accuses many people of witchcraft. She also accuses Elizabeth Proctor,
wife of John Proctor. Abigail uses her power of the court to get to her obsession, John Proctor, by
trying to eliminate Elizabeth. She is unsuccessful in getting this done and ends up executing over

Another quote I would like to use to support John's bravery is, "She looked to dance with me on
my wife's grave. God help me, I lusted!" The reason I chose this out of the rest was because it
shows how far John will go, even if it means to soil his reputation, just to get Abigail out of

John is completely forgiven for all his sins. He has gone through so much that he feels he should

is a farmer in his middle thirties. The author gives little to no detailed physical description of him,

then there's people that have manipulated people. Being experienced with situation can make it
easy for one to manipulate anyone. For example in "The Crucible" it demonstrates how one

continued to influence life and thinkings. Its story tracing the 1692 Salem Witch Trials has been
widely read, received and understood, along with influencing the reader and their ideals. The play

The first theme that helped create The Crucible's universal state was intolerance. Intolerance began,

England Colonies. Puritan beliefs were outcasted by the King and its government, causing their

Looking at the two historical events, we can see that hysteria was ever–present at the times in which
they occurred. It is evident that this hysteria ruined the lives of many people, due to the constant
accusations of witches and communists. The events that led up to the Salem witch trails and
McCarthyism was also similar. Both events were irrational fears that witchcraft and communism
were going to change the face of society if drastic measures were not taken. People were involved

not give into pressure by others in life. By dying, he taught his kids that not only was he a
honorable man, but he also was a good example of standing your ground and doing the right thing.
John Proctor is not a man known to go to church often, but he must of remembered this quote from
the bible: "No one has love greater than this that someone should surrender his soul in behalf of his
friends"(John 15:13). This quote means that someone who surrenders his or her soul for their

Puritans had a strict and disciplined lifestyle that was live to achieve the grace of God. They
believed that people that were sinners, liars, and adulterers were damned in the eyes of God. In The
Crucible the main antagonist was Abigail. She showed tendencies to be spiteful, jealous, and
vengeful.
One of the main antagonist was Abigail Williams, Abigail would use her spitefulness to blame
other people she showed hate too. In the text it states, "she is blackening my name in the village!

Hale requires everyone who is accused of being a witch to go to court and agree that they are witches
in order to prevent being hanged. If they admit that they aren't a witch they would be hanged
immediately. Hale seems to be very involved with the accusations, questioning those that are accused
everything they know about god and the church (asking Hale to recite the 10 commandments,
questioning the victims' attendance in church, baptism, and things he sees as strange). When Hale
goes to John Proctor's house we witness the interrogation process: "I thought, sir, to put some
questions as to the Christian character of this house, if you'll permit me...I note that you are rarely in
the church on Sabbath day...how comes it that only two [boys] are baptized" (2.621–671)? Later on
in the play, when Proctor is testifying in court, they mystery starts to unravel inside of Hale's head.
At the end of Proctor's trial, he yells that he no longer supports what is going on after Judge Danforth
is unwilling to listen to Proctor's testimony that the whole thing is pretense: "I denounce these

The Crucible: A Literary Analysis In 1692, Salem was populated by Puritans who believed in
black–and–white lines between good and evil. The powers of darkness were real forces to them,
which could wreak havoc and destruction on society if unleashed. The system of government was
that God was the true leader of society, and he expressed his will through the actions of men and
women. In the Old Testament, we hear stories of how God led directly through Moses; Salem,
likewise, was led through men who were supposed to be directly connected to God. In theory, if
you believe in a loving God, this should work; but in practice, men lust after power regardless of

As the witch hysteria moves through the village, more and more women are arrested as witches.
Their trials are swift and speedy and almost all are convicted. If they confess, however, they are
released. Soon, however, the girls stop pointing the finger at the town's less reputable citizens
and begin accusing the religious and respectable Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey. Elizabeth
warns her husband to put a stop to it by telling the court what he heard Abigail say. But she's too
late. When Abigail sees her chance to accuse Elizabeth, she takes it. After observing Mary Warren
make a doll (poppet) and stick a needle in it during one of the trials, she later claims that
somebody stuck a needle in her. She says it is Elizabeth Proctor's spirit that has done it, and proof
will be found in the poppet in her house. Indeed, the poppet is found and Elizabeth is arrested.
John Proctor tries to get his wife released from jail by appealing to the court. His confessions of
adultery with Abigail, and the failed testimony of Mary Warren, bring things to the boiling point.
Proctor brings Mary Warren to court, where she confesses that she was lying and never saw spirits.
Unfortunately, she can't reproduce her fake hysteria without the other girls doing it, too. Abigail and
the other girls begin to pretend that Mary Warren herself is bewitching them, even as they all stand

However, how people have had their minds clouded their judgements. The Crucible is a very
realistic event. The way the word, crucible is defined is "a situation of severe trial, or in which
different elements interact, leading to the creation of something new." In our world, there are many

People around the world has heard or seen it happen. Danforth from The Crucible states "And you
know that near to four hundred are in jails from Marblehead to Lynn, and upon my signature... and
seventy–two condemned to hang by that signature (Miller, 54). The judge, Danforth has sentenced
nearly four hundred people to jail and to hang seventy–two of those people. All of these people are
affected by his decision. The same goes for school shootings. Family, friends, or neighbors
everyone will feel the rippling waves of these events. This is but one of many caused by people's
judgements. The terrorist group, we all know as Isis, states they've come to remove obstacles and
restoring God into order to Earth. Danforth states his belief "Now, sir–which of these in your
opinion may be brought to God? I will myself strive with him till dawn (Miller, 80). He believes
he's right and with all those against him he tries to continue to convince himself he's right. Most of
us disagree with Isis. We see them killing innocent people, and they tell themselves they are doing

mindset that the victims are telling the whole truth. He even said that witchcraft is an invisible crime
and the only witnesses are the witch and her victim; "Therefore, [he] must rely upon her victims–
and they do testify" (Miller 100). By thinking this way, Danforth diminishes any chance at anyone
denying that what the children are saying is true. The persecution of innocent women is
inevitable because Danforth holds all of the power and he is choosing to put his trust in people
who are deceitful and selfish. Example 2: "Danforth, himself engaged and entered by Abigail:
'Mary Warren, do you witch her? I say to you, do you send your spirit out?' " (Miller 109).

The Crucible written by Arthur Miller the character Abigail Williams is the most blame for all the
