Structural Violence Essay
Structural violence is the way in which a social structure will harm people by not providing, by
limiting or by barring people from receiving basic needs. Structural violence impacts people on the
bottom rung of society. People who live in poverty or are not considered being of a high social
standing. This could be because of a person's age, sex, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, or any other
aspect that makes them different from the majority of the population or different from what people
consider to be the norm. However, structural violence does not necessarily need the majority of the
population to define it, it can manifest by a few people in the country or out making decisions for
the populace.
Structural violence differs from...show more content...
Let's re–examine the inner city school mentioned above. What are some assumptions about this
school? It is a public school, it is in an area with lower incomes, the children and teachers who
populate this school are mostly of a singular race or ethnicity, the education they receive may be
less than sufficient, the majority of the children will not go on to higher education, it would take too
many resources to fix a school in this area. What are some assumptions about a school in the
suburbs? It may be public, the surrounding area is mostly middle class families, the teachers and
children who populate the school are mostly of a singular race, the education is sufficient or above
the current standard, the majority of children will go on to higher education, it is worth the effort to
put resources into enhancing the school.
This is an example of structural violence. One group is treated differently from another and as a
result has a more difficult life. The children in the inner city school will have a harder time
throughout their lives because of this violence. Unlike the structural violence in Haiti or Marshal
Islands we discussed in class, this example is not very evident to people. It is not even very
noticeable to the people who live with this violence; it has been the way life has always been.
Structural violence can come from individual, social and political bearings. Although structural
violence is not derived from anyone

How Is Winston Presented In The Book 1984
1: the opening sentence of the book, ('it was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were
striking thirteen.') suggests that the type of place the narrator is describing is one that has a need
for clocks hat everyone can hear. Seeing as the 24–hour clock is used, the reader can infer that the
narrator is in a rather strictly organized place, maybe something military or government–controlled.
2a: From Winston Smith's name, 'Winston' meaning 'from a friendly country' and 'Smith' being a
common last name, I can definitely see a possible irony. His name, if you read into it, would suggest
him to be an unremarkable man from a friendly country. In this book, however, Winston smith is a
thought–criminal from one of the most ungoodwise countries you can imagine. 2b: Winston
Churchill and Winston Smith are similar in many respects, as they both hail from Wartime
England(though he England's name changes to airstrip one in 1984), as well as the two of them
were in positions to influence the public's view of their reality. Both men try their best to make
circumstances better, even if only temporarily. 2c: we also know that Winston smith is a
middle–aged man, between thirty and forty. He works for the ministry of truth patching up old lies
with new ones, and is relatively good at appearing orthodox and avoiding facecrime up until the
time he meets Julia. That's when he starts to break all the rules. 3: the party's mottos are: WAR IS

Loneliness Essay
To be lonely is an easy thing, being alone is another matter entirely. To understand this, first one
must understand the difference between loneliness and being alone. To be alone means that your
are not in the company of anyone else. You are one. But loneliness can happen anytime, anywhere.
You can be lonely in a crowd, lonely with friends, lonely with family. You can even be lonely
while with loved ones. For feeling lonely, is in essence a feeling of being alone. As thought you
were one and you feel as though you will always be that way. Loneliness can be one of the most
destructive feelings humans are capable of feeling. For loneliness can lead to depression, suicide,
and even to raging out and hurting friends and/or...show more content...
Generally almost all loneliness can be traced back to low or below "average" self–esteem.
Chronically lonely people will usually have low opinions of themselves. They may think of
themselves as unintelligent, unattractive, broken, unwanted, not worthy of good things, no good,
unable to do anything right, and/or socially isolated. Unlike many other emotionally hurting people,
the chronically lonely usually know what is wrong, but like many others they don't believe they can
do anything to fix it, or, circling back to the low self–esteem, they may also believe they are not
worth of happiness.
It takes the strong support of a good friend(s) or other loved one(s) to help the lonely conquer their
feelings. Simply trying to counteract the low self–esteem verbally will not do it, though, for in their
down state, they will see the person as just trying to be nice or spare their feelings. The lonely
must be shown in more subtle, yet clear ways that they are not the useless person they perceive
themselves to be. For example, with a person who feels particularly unloved and unwanted,
someone close to them should try to take a little extra time to spend with that person and try to set
aside a little extra time to talk to the person.
Nothing special needs to be said or done, simply spending time, willing and without having been
asked, allows the lonely one to see that they are loved. That they are worthy of being associated with
and that there are

Introductory Paragraph Analysis
Introductory Paragraph
Hunger. Emptiness. Death. In the novel Night by Elie wiesel speaks about hunger as something all
jews were used to, empty and deprived of nutrition they were already dead. Hunger consumes all
hope and love that people have with one another.
Body Paragraph 1
In Night, hunger devours most relationships within the vile gates of auschwitz, for example when
Elie Wiesel was on the train cart he witnessed a son kill his own father for some crust "Meir, my
little Meir! Don't you recognize me... You're killing your father... I have bread... for you too..." (pg
101). From hunger a son betrayed his own father only to fill his stomach, in the end they both died
due to their desire to contain hunger. When Elie talks about how he didn't recognize

Informative Speech On Opioids
Informative Speech Outline
Introduction
I.Attention Getter: Many of us know firsthand what opioids do to people. I bet everyone here has
had a call where drugs of any kind where used in the wrong way, especially opioids.
II.Motivation for Listening: But have you ever wondered how they get to the point where they need
medical attention, and if this problem could have been prevented?
III.Thesis Statement: Today, I will inform you on what opioid do to their victims and possible
solutions to the problem.
IV.Preview of Speech: I will identify the problem, discuss what opioidaddiction does to people, and
discuss possible solutions to the problem.
V.Transition: First, I will identify the problem.
Body
I.First Main Point: Last month president Trump declared the opioid epidemic a public health
emergency (Merica, 2017). This goes to show that the opioid problem is a huge deal in the United
States and it should be treated so.
a.Analysis: According to the Center for Disease Control, in Florida, there was over 3,200 deaths
from opioid overdoses, and opioids account for the most overdose deaths in the United States
("Opioid Overdose," 2016).
b.Analysis: Opioids are a class of drug that are medically used as very effective painkillers, like
fentanyl and morphine, however, they are highly addictive and produce a feeling of euphoria
("Opioids"). This combination leads do a lot of abuse and dependency, where people take more
than prescribed in order to feel better. People start off taking the opioid painkillers in order to not
feel pain as prescribed by their doctors. Then, they end up getting addicted to them. There are also
illicit opioids, such as heroin, that are also highly addictive and also lead to dependency and death
("Opioids"). These illicit versions are taken for recreational reasons, and are also often mixed with
other drugs. The combination of taking an unregulated drug in conjunction with other drugs leads to
a lot of overdoses.
c.Transition: Next, I will talk about why people get addicted to opioids and what they do to the body.
II.Second Main Point: As mentioned before, opioids are highly addictive, but why? Why don't
people just stop taking the drugs when they realize they have a problem? The

Essay on Common Sense
One of the most fundamental people in the push for American Independence, Thomas Paine offers
much advice in both Common Sense, and The Crisis. Paine offers very strong arguments in
Common Sense, which are supported by his own reason, his sensibility, his common sense and by
his ability to draw inference from what has already happened. Paine uses every element in his
ability to help give more depth to his arguments and plans. However, of all the cases Thomas Paine
makes in Common Sense, the ultimate goal of Paine is to incite the American Public to make a stand
against British tyranny, and break from Britain altogether, and become independent. According to
Thomas Paine, rights and liberties of man come straight from each person's...show more content...
Paine reasons revolution is justified by the lack of other means, and his only option left to
suggest is to fight for independence. Throughout Common Sense, Thomas Paine shows that he is
against Monarchical government, and he says that the government type itself is not a reasonable
means of ruling a nation. To support this, he sheds light on several reasons in which a monarchy
is a bad choice for government. Paine says that all the power is unbalanced and vested in the
hands of a single person, which most of the time leads to the King of the nation using the powers
he has, against his people, for the benefit of himself, and those around him. Paine also says that to
have hereditary succession of a monarch is complete nonsense. Paine uses his reason to support
this case by showing that maybe a nation is lucky and has a well fit ruler as a King, but who is to
say the King's successor will be best fit for the position of King or Queen of a country. The notion
that one ruler is fair and just, does NOT guarantee that the successor will be as just or as fair. In
addition to a just cause, America is fighting with a few key advantages. While the British have a
bigger Army and a Navy as well, America would be fighting on its own soil. To add to that, Britain
also has about 6 months worth of sailing between her home country and the colonies themselves.
Another plus side for the colonies is that they could fight Britain just as well, even with a

Ocean Descriptive Essay
I stand at the edge where two worlds collide. The oceans exude power and confindence yet its are
the connector to everyone. Here at the ocean, your peace can be found in the middle of this chaotic
world. This is where people can lose themselves in the beauty, tranquility and the uncontrollable
power of the ocean.
I stand on the edge looking forward the ocean seems endless. Some people believe at the horizon
there is nothing just a place where the moon, star and the sun hide until they shall return.
Scrunching my toes into the damp sand from the high tide. The sand is like rough sandpaper on
my bare feet. Whispers of the warm sea breeze as it skips over the lulling waves. The breeze
carries the salty aroma that swirls in my nose leaving a feeling of tranquility and safety. Listening
to the thundering raspy echo's of the waves as they churn crumbling into whitewash chaos
deafening my ears to whatever else is around me. The squawking of the protectors of the ocean as
they circle above, master of catching the upward sea breeze drafts. Watching the waves draw in a
breath of air and sighing deeply gradually crawling along each grain of sand stretching itself out thin
to reach my feet. The ocean breathes in again as the thin layer of water returns into the depths of the
unknown.
The sun slowly simmers down into the horizon. The ocean reflecting a amber orange painting on its
mesmerizing turquoise canvas. The warmth of the air is replaced by chills. The light salt–water laps

Whilst cyber bullying is not physical it's emotional and psychological effects are devastating for
the victim and can often lead to suicide and depression (Hinduja & Patchin, 2010). Social
Networking sites act as a platform where bullies can say things they might not usually say to
someone in person, anonymity and less physical proximity act as a wall between the bully and the
victim, none the less, the words or rumors' that are shared are still just as hurtful. Bullies often feel
more confident online and they can contact their victims anytime, anywhere, day or night, not just in
the school yard (Smith et al., 2008)." (Procon. (24 O). Retrieved from http:/

The First Sentence
When an author writes, it is very important that the first sentence presents the effect the writer wants.
The first sentence should set the mood, tone, and give the audience a glimpse or emotional insight
on what's to come. Edgar Allen Poe is a master in using the first sentence to generate underlying
effects on his audience. The opening sentence of Poe's The Cask of Amontillado goes "The thousand
injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed
revenge" this immediately set a rather dark tone to the story. From reading that first sentence,
audiences knew the type of story that they will be reading. The promise of revenge by the narrator
also help set up the potential for future conflicts and leaves...show more content...
The exclamation marks and dashes, repetition of the word "nervous", and the use "very" and
"dreadfully" also serves to exaggerate the situation. It tells readers that the narrator was on edge
about something. The narrator is painted with guilt from the get go. The sentence begs readers to
question what the narrator had done to be so nervous? It does a great job of keeping the reader on
the edge of their seat by creating suspense in the story. From reading the rest of the story, we learn
the narrator spent a few nights stalking this old man. We see the narrator spend the majority of his
nights observing every little details. The narrator is going mad focusing on the man's demon eye and
heartbeat. Although the narrator has gone mad in the beginning of the story, he gets more nervous
towards the end of the story. He is nervous that the police will find out that he killed the man and
therefore, showed them what horrible thing he had done. From the very beginning of the story, the
reader could tell that something bad had happened and the narrator was panicking because of that

How I Really Like The Opening Sentence
First of all, I really like the opening sentence. It immodestly caught my attention and made me
want to read more. It explains how it can be easy to forget that we all live in a physical world. We
are actually part of something, not just an imagination. It then goes on to explain that we live in
such a digital age, and everything we hear, see, games, apps, videos, news articles, and photographs
are produced by us, real humans. But the things that we consider genuine do not actually exist. This
really makes you think, what does this mean? Well, for example I am reading this on my laptop, and
the letters I am reading an typing are conceived as impulses or energy rather than things. Old photos
have been scanned and made digital. Even though we can hold the printed image physically, it has a
place in the world. It's occupying space. The mid 1940's has physical presence as well. The
images I am about to talk about are accurate representations of a city struggling to rebuild and
again some sense of "normality" after suffering destruction of WW2. The damage of the images,
like the spot, mold, etc, are eerie but they provide another way to consider what we call "real." All
of the things McAvoy captured, did happen. Yet, after the war, the only to you could find was
hunger, cold, and depression. His images were taken and transformed into something else that was
"ear–abstract, ghostly works, within which one can still see remnants of the robust photojournalism
that McAvoy

Essay on Violence
Violence is one of the most problematic issues society faces today, and it has been increasing day
after day, in the streets of our cities. The most common description of what violence really is can be
given as negativity towards something or someone either through physical or verbal actions, which
often causes the victim to suffer pain. The different types of violence that exist in our multi–cultural
society are out–numbered, but the most evident ones are domestic, gang, sexual, and racial violence.
While violence can definitely be reduced, it will never be eliminated due to the nature of humans.
Domestic violence, also known as spousal abuse, occurs when a person in an intimate relationship or
marriage tries to dominate and control...show more content...
On October 24 2000, a news article headline read, "Gang wars 6 Dead". This event had taken place
in Etobicoke, and the news article contained sentences like "Six victims in six months" and
"calculated executions". It also contained terms like "Bloods" and "Crips". These terms and
sentences have officially crossed the border and have become all too familiar in Canadian cities.
In order to cut back this outlaw behaviour, we need to educate our youth about the ill effects of
gangs, drugs, guns, and should try to persuade them to instead make friends with those who accept
you for who you are and use all their time in doing something positive and proactive. As a result of
reducing and preventing gang violence, many cities have created special task forces and given
schools their own police officers.
Sexual violence is another form of violence that has plagued our cities. This crime involves violence
that is specifically sexual in nature, to which the victim does not give consent. According to 2005
statistics, 51% of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual violence. 6
out of 10 victims who reported being sexually violated were under 17. These numbers are alarming
and scary. It is extremely important to get rid of such sinister crimes in our communities because it
robs the victims of their innocence, self–esteem, confidence, and even trust in our society. The

Essay on Child Birth
Birth of a child can be such a happy time, especially when the little one is very healthy. We all
have seen the movies when a new child is born, some of us are lucky to see it first hand. Some of
us do get goose bumps, me being one of them. It is just so exciting to see that little life come out
of what has been in that big belly for nine months. We sometimes refer to the birth of a child as
labor. If only it was as easy as the name sounds. However, it is not. There are three main stages in
birth. The first stage is the longest stage that can last 12 to 14 hours with the first birth, and later
births are shorter. Dilation and effacement of the cervix take place here. That is when the uterine
contractions gradually become more frequent and...show more content...
Getting the most care that they can helps a lot. Even normal babies need the support and to grow
a good relationship with their parents to last forever. Although babies spend most of their time
sleeping and eating they still have transitions to different stages. For example, reflexes are the
most common for people to recognize the organized patterns of behavior. Also, a crying baby is
what everyone recognizes. However, it is somewhat good when the baby cries, because it
stimulates strong discomfort that the adults can realize. Usually the baby just needs a diaper
change or needs to be feed, but sometimes its more and it is the parent's job to figure out why the
baby is crying. The parents have to soothe them; they can do this by rocking, walking, swaddling,
and talking softly. The baby also is developing their five senses, so it is important that the parents
do not interfere with the development. For example, using screaming very loudly can ruin a baby's
hearing. Vision is the one that develops the least. Nerveless, newborns can recognize human faces
and want the mother's familiar face instead of a stranger. The most widely used instrument for
helping the behavior of the newborn infant is Brazelton's Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale
(NBAS). It has helped researchers understand newborns better. The baby's arriving is one of the
happiest times for a new parent, but can be very stressful. The parents do have different
responsibilities; it

Analysis of the Opening Chapter of Pride and Prejudice
The opening sentence of 'Pride and Prejudice' tells is the main theme of the entire novel, marriage.
'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in
want of a wife.'
The novel is based upon the theme of marriage, finding a potential husband who has 'sufficient
funds'. Jane, Elizabeth, Lydia, Kitty and Mary all wish to find themselves husbands so that they
can be married off to a man who has a large annual wage and also a large inheritance. In the days of
when 'Pride and Prejudice' was set (in the 1800s), inheritance and yearly wage were very important
factors which women looked for...show more content...
So therefore, he would not wish to marry any of the Bennet sisters.
The second sentence of 'Pride and Prejudice' also follows on with the theme of marriage and
finding a suitable husband. 'However little known the feelings or views of such a man maybe on his
first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families,
that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.'
This quotation explains to us that the women do not need to know how these men feel or their
thoughts. Even if he has just entered the village they (villagers) are all just thinking whether or not
he would make a good future husband depending on his wealth and size of his estate. The women
did not really care about their husbands, but as long as they provided them with financial security,
the wives were happy. Any man could be thought of as a marriage possibility, so this is why this is
such a main, important theme for the book.
In the novel , the Bennet sisters need to gain financial status through marriage, but Elizabeth does
not want to marry for these reasons. Their culture was to be married, but you could either marry
for the reasons above, or like Lizzy you could marry for love, which was very rare during this period
of time. 'Pride and Prejudice' follows the story of the Bennet sisters trying to find love and

Running Away from Home
Adolescence is a time of transition when a person is going through a critical period because they
will grow up and become an adult. At that time, teenagers are seeking their identity. In the process of
self–development, they usually become very sensitive and susceptible, so they need help and
attention from their closest people, especially parents or family. Then, because of their susceptibility
they often do something without thinking carefully. For example many teenagers are run away from
home, and many reasons that cause them to run away from home.
The first cause is abuse and violence in the family, this is maybe the most reason why children run
away from home. Physical or mental abuse will cause a serious trauma to them. They will run away
because they are hoping out there no one will ever hurt them again. Sometimes it could be because
of their overprotective parents or even because of a dissent over curfew. They usually want freedom
in their life, but every parent has their own rules. Many of them feel the rules are too curbing them
so they decide to run away from home.
And then, family conflict such as parental divorce is also one of the reasons they are not
comfortable being at home. They will feel unwanted or unloved by their parents. They also feel
guilty or blame themselves so they no longer want to stay at home. Sometimes, parents are imposing
their will without thinking about their child feelings. For example, many parents do the arranged
marriage and always

"Despite the ghastly events of September 11, 2001, another September day 139 years earlier remains
the bloodiest single day in American History." The opening sentence in James McPherson's book is
quite telling. McPherson goes on to describe that around 6,500 Union and Confederate soldiers
combined met their deaths at the Battle of Antietam. McPherson's use of death statistics bring the
reader into his narrative, and help the reader to begin thinking about the impact the Civil War had on
America. According to McPherson the Civil War was constantly changing hands, at some points the
Confederates were ahead, and at other times it was the Union Army. McPherson's thesis is that no
one battle decided the war, but Antietam was the "event" of the war, and changed the course of the
war. McPherson effectively confirms his thesis, by not just including the military characteristics, but
also interweaving social and political characteristics that were important throughout the Civil War.
McPherson effectively supports his thesis by providing military characteristics about the Battle of
Antietam. To first outline this McPherson begins by outlining how important certain bordered were
to Union armies at the beginning of the war in 1861. He supports this by noting that Union armies
had secured pertinent border states: Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland. The purpose of this was to
push Confederate armies out of western Virginia, which then would later become a Union state. The

Great Gatsby Opening Paragraph Essay
The excerpt from the text, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, begins by providing great detail
through use of adjectives. The opening paragraph has an almost dream–like quality, using phrases
and words such as "summer nights" "music" "champagne and the stars". These descriptions
provide a great idea as to how the neighbour lives (he is quite clearly an animated merrymaker)
who throws a multitude of parties. The narrator in this text is first person, giving the reader the
effect of almost being within the story. We travel through the house with the omnipresent narrator,
seeing the frivolous food laden tables and a whole orchestra set to entertain the guests for the entire
evening. The use of this omnipresence forces the reader to truly imagine the setting, with ornate
decorations and an abundance if splendour. The audience gets a view of the lavish lifestyle of the
neighbour, while also getting a peek at what it is like to be on the outside looking in, a theme we
discover in the first paragraph....show more content...
The era was famed for its wealth, opulence and parties (Exactly what the neighbour appears to
have and do). The short paragraphs serve to represent his fast paced lifestyle, the details flying
past, as his nights do through all his partying. The vocabulary used is quite specialized, using a
multitude of adjectives giving an insight on the life of the neighbour. The author has cleverly,
through his use of adjectives, made the reader feel the summer atmosphere, and feel the carefree
attitude of all the partygoers. This method of using such detailed description forces the reader to
feel intrigued, and to want to read on and learn more. These adjectives embody a visual form, and
they are occasionally comparative 'Lights grow brighter', 'Laughter is easier minute by minute',

The Opening Sentence Of Immanuel Kant 's Essay
In the opening sentence of Immanuel Kant's essay, "What Is Enlightenment?" he answers the
question quite succinctly. In brief, Kant believed that "enlightenment is man 's emergence from his
self–imposed immaturity." Furthermore, he added that "Immaturity is the inability to use one 's
understanding without guidance from another." I considerably agree with his definitions, yet his
annotations on immaturity in relation towards religion, the government, and the way people should
live their lives are a bit obscured, impulsive and quite vague. Although I believe people should think
for themselves and have an open–mind, I do not agree that that makes them qualified to live their
lives without rules, regulations or guidance.
The world is continuously changing. Every new age causes for new ways of thinking, new rules,
new leaders, even new wars. Things can't always stay the same and they don't. What was okay 300
years ago is not okay today. What is okay today, will not work tomorrow. The world must change
because people change. Throughout history we observe the many changes our country undertook;
from slave ships in the seventeenth century to the 44th President of the United States, President
Barack Obama in 2008. But what causes these changes? What gives people the knowledge and
courage to stand for what they believe to be right and justified? And most importantly, what planted
the ideas in the minds of people such as Marin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy
that

Opening Sentence Of An Essay

  • 1. Structural Violence Essay Structural violence is the way in which a social structure will harm people by not providing, by limiting or by barring people from receiving basic needs. Structural violence impacts people on the bottom rung of society. People who live in poverty or are not considered being of a high social standing. This could be because of a person's age, sex, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, or any other aspect that makes them different from the majority of the population or different from what people consider to be the norm. However, structural violence does not necessarily need the majority of the population to define it, it can manifest by a few people in the country or out making decisions for the populace. Structural violence differs from...show more content... Let's re–examine the inner city school mentioned above. What are some assumptions about this school? It is a public school, it is in an area with lower incomes, the children and teachers who populate this school are mostly of a singular race or ethnicity, the education they receive may be less than sufficient, the majority of the children will not go on to higher education, it would take too many resources to fix a school in this area. What are some assumptions about a school in the suburbs? It may be public, the surrounding area is mostly middle class families, the teachers and children who populate the school are mostly of a singular race, the education is sufficient or above the current standard, the majority of children will go on to higher education, it is worth the effort to put resources into enhancing the school. This is an example of structural violence. One group is treated differently from another and as a result has a more difficult life. The children in the inner city school will have a harder time throughout their lives because of this violence. Unlike the structural violence in Haiti or Marshal Islands we discussed in class, this example is not very evident to people. It is not even very noticeable to the people who live with this violence; it has been the way life has always been. Structural violence can come from individual, social and political bearings. Although structural violence is not derived from anyone Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. How Is Winston Presented In The Book 1984 1: the opening sentence of the book, ('it was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.') suggests that the type of place the narrator is describing is one that has a need for clocks hat everyone can hear. Seeing as the 24–hour clock is used, the reader can infer that the narrator is in a rather strictly organized place, maybe something military or government–controlled. 2a: From Winston Smith's name, 'Winston' meaning 'from a friendly country' and 'Smith' being a common last name, I can definitely see a possible irony. His name, if you read into it, would suggest him to be an unremarkable man from a friendly country. In this book, however, Winston smith is a thought–criminal from one of the most ungoodwise countries you can imagine. 2b: Winston Churchill and Winston Smith are similar in many respects, as they both hail from Wartime England(though he England's name changes to airstrip one in 1984), as well as the two of them were in positions to influence the public's view of their reality. Both men try their best to make circumstances better, even if only temporarily. 2c: we also know that Winston smith is a middle–aged man, between thirty and forty. He works for the ministry of truth patching up old lies with new ones, and is relatively good at appearing orthodox and avoiding facecrime up until the time he meets Julia. That's when he starts to break all the rules. 3: the party's mottos are: WAR IS PEACE/FREEDOM IS SLAVERY/IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. The Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Loneliness Essay To be lonely is an easy thing, being alone is another matter entirely. To understand this, first one must understand the difference between loneliness and being alone. To be alone means that your are not in the company of anyone else. You are one. But loneliness can happen anytime, anywhere. You can be lonely in a crowd, lonely with friends, lonely with family. You can even be lonely while with loved ones. For feeling lonely, is in essence a feeling of being alone. As thought you were one and you feel as though you will always be that way. Loneliness can be one of the most destructive feelings humans are capable of feeling. For loneliness can lead to depression, suicide, and even to raging out and hurting friends and/or...show more content... Generally almost all loneliness can be traced back to low or below "average" self–esteem. Chronically lonely people will usually have low opinions of themselves. They may think of themselves as unintelligent, unattractive, broken, unwanted, not worthy of good things, no good, unable to do anything right, and/or socially isolated. Unlike many other emotionally hurting people, the chronically lonely usually know what is wrong, but like many others they don't believe they can do anything to fix it, or, circling back to the low self–esteem, they may also believe they are not worth of happiness. It takes the strong support of a good friend(s) or other loved one(s) to help the lonely conquer their feelings. Simply trying to counteract the low self–esteem verbally will not do it, though, for in their down state, they will see the person as just trying to be nice or spare their feelings. The lonely must be shown in more subtle, yet clear ways that they are not the useless person they perceive themselves to be. For example, with a person who feels particularly unloved and unwanted, someone close to them should try to take a little extra time to spend with that person and try to set aside a little extra time to talk to the person. Nothing special needs to be said or done, simply spending time, willing and without having been asked, allows the lonely one to see that they are loved. That they are worthy of being associated with and that there are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Introductory Paragraph Analysis Introductory Paragraph Hunger. Emptiness. Death. In the novel Night by Elie wiesel speaks about hunger as something all jews were used to, empty and deprived of nutrition they were already dead. Hunger consumes all hope and love that people have with one another. Body Paragraph 1 In Night, hunger devours most relationships within the vile gates of auschwitz, for example when Elie Wiesel was on the train cart he witnessed a son kill his own father for some crust "Meir, my little Meir! Don't you recognize me... You're killing your father... I have bread... for you too..." (pg 101). From hunger a son betrayed his own father only to fill his stomach, in the end they both died due to their desire to contain hunger. • 5. Informative Speech On Opioids Informative Speech Outline Introduction I.Attention Getter: Many of us know firsthand what opioids do to people. I bet everyone here has had a call where drugs of any kind where used in the wrong way, especially opioids. II.Motivation for Listening: But have you ever wondered how they get to the point where they need medical attention, and if this problem could have been prevented? III.Thesis Statement: Today, I will inform you on what opioid do to their victims and possible solutions to the problem. IV.Preview of Speech: I will identify the problem, discuss what opioidaddiction does to people, and discuss possible solutions to the problem. V.Transition: First, I will identify the problem. Body I.First Main Point: Last month president Trump declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency (Merica, 2017). This goes to show that the opioid problem is a huge deal in the United States and it should be treated so. a.Analysis: According to the Center for Disease Control, in Florida, there was over 3,200 deaths from opioid overdoses, and opioids account for the most overdose deaths in the United States ("Opioid Overdose," 2016). b.Analysis: Opioids are a class of drug that are medically used as very effective painkillers, like fentanyl and morphine, however, they are highly addictive and produce a feeling of euphoria ("Opioids"). This combination leads do a lot of abuse and dependency, where people take more than prescribed in order to feel better. People start off taking the opioid painkillers in order to not feel pain as prescribed by their doctors. Then, they end up getting addicted to them. There are also illicit opioids, such as heroin, that are also highly addictive and also lead to dependency and death ("Opioids"). These illicit versions are taken for recreational reasons, and are also often mixed with other drugs. The combination of taking an unregulated drug in conjunction with other drugs leads to a lot of overdoses. c.Transition: Next, I will talk about why people get addicted to opioids and what they do to the body. II.Second Main Point: As mentioned before, opioids are highly addictive, but why? Why don't people just stop taking the drugs when they realize they have a problem? • 6. Essay on Common Sense One of the most fundamental people in the push for American Independence, Thomas Paine offers much advice in both Common Sense, and The Crisis. Paine offers very strong arguments in Common Sense, which are supported by his own reason, his sensibility, his common sense and by his ability to draw inference from what has already happened. Paine uses every element in his ability to help give more depth to his arguments and plans. However, of all the cases Thomas Paine makes in Common Sense, the ultimate goal of Paine is to incite the American Public to make a stand against British tyranny, and break from Britain altogether, and become independent. According to Thomas Paine, rights and liberties of man come straight from each person's...show more content... Paine reasons revolution is justified by the lack of other means, and his only option left to suggest is to fight for independence. Throughout Common Sense, Thomas Paine shows that he is against Monarchical government, and he says that the government type itself is not a reasonable means of ruling a nation. To support this, he sheds light on several reasons in which a monarchy is a bad choice for government. Paine says that all the power is unbalanced and vested in the hands of a single person, which most of the time leads to the King of the nation using the powers he has, against his people, for the benefit of himself, and those around him. Paine also says that to have hereditary succession of a monarch is complete nonsense. Paine uses his reason to support this case by showing that maybe a nation is lucky and has a well fit ruler as a King, but who is to say the King's successor will be best fit for the position of King or Queen of a country. The notion that one ruler is fair and just, does NOT guarantee that the successor will be as just or as fair. In addition to a just cause, America is fighting with a few key advantages. While the British have a bigger Army and a Navy as well, America would be fighting on its own soil. To add to that, Britain also has about 6 months worth of sailing between her home country and the colonies themselves. Another plus side for the colonies is that they could fight Britain just as well, even with a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Ocean Descriptive Essay I stand at the edge where two worlds collide. The oceans exude power and confindence yet its are the connector to everyone. Here at the ocean, your peace can be found in the middle of this chaotic world. This is where people can lose themselves in the beauty, tranquility and the uncontrollable power of the ocean. I stand on the edge looking forward the ocean seems endless. Some people believe at the horizon there is nothing just a place where the moon, star and the sun hide until they shall return. Scrunching my toes into the damp sand from the high tide. The sand is like rough sandpaper on my bare feet. Whispers of the warm sea breeze as it skips over the lulling waves. The breeze carries the salty aroma that swirls in my nose leaving a feeling of tranquility and safety. Listening to the thundering raspy echo's of the waves as they churn crumbling into whitewash chaos deafening my ears to whatever else is around me. The squawking of the protectors of the ocean as they circle above, master of catching the upward sea breeze drafts. Watching the waves draw in a breath of air and sighing deeply gradually crawling along each grain of sand stretching itself out thin to reach my feet. The ocean breathes in again as the thin layer of water returns into the depths of the unknown. The sun slowly simmers down into the horizon. The ocean reflecting a amber orange painting on its mesmerizing turquoise canvas. The warmth of the air is replaced by chills. Whilst cyber bullying is not physical it's emotional and psychological effects are devastating for the victim and can often lead to suicide and depression (Hinduja & Patchin, 2010). Social Networking sites act as a platform where bullies can say things they might not usually say to someone in person, anonymity and less physical proximity act as a wall between the bully and the victim, none the less, the words or rumors' that are shared are still just as hurtful. Bullies often feel more confident online and they can contact their victims anytime, anywhere, day or night, not just in the school yard (Smith et al., 2008)." (Procon. (24 O). • 9. The First Sentence When an author writes, it is very important that the first sentence presents the effect the writer wants. The first sentence should set the mood, tone, and give the audience a glimpse or emotional insight on what's to come. Edgar Allen Poe is a master in using the first sentence to generate underlying effects on his audience. The opening sentence of Poe's The Cask of Amontillado goes "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge" this immediately set a rather dark tone to the story. From reading that first sentence, audiences knew the type of story that they will be reading. The promise of revenge by the narrator also help set up the potential for future conflicts and leaves...show more content... The exclamation marks and dashes, repetition of the word "nervous", and the use "very" and "dreadfully" also serves to exaggerate the situation. It tells readers that the narrator was on edge about something. The narrator is painted with guilt from the get go. The sentence begs readers to question what the narrator had done to be so nervous? It does a great job of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat by creating suspense in the story. From reading the rest of the story, we learn the narrator spent a few nights stalking this old man. We see the narrator spend the majority of his nights observing every little details. The narrator is going mad focusing on the man's demon eye and heartbeat. Although the narrator has gone mad in the beginning of the story, he gets more nervous towards the end of the story. He is nervous that the police will find out that he killed the man and therefore, showed them what horrible thing he had done. From the very beginning of the story, the reader could tell that something bad had happened and the narrator was panicking because of that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. How I Really Like The Opening Sentence First of all, I really like the opening sentence. It immodestly caught my attention and made me want to read more. It explains how it can be easy to forget that we all live in a physical world. We are actually part of something, not just an imagination. It then goes on to explain that we live in such a digital age, and everything we hear, see, games, apps, videos, news articles, and photographs are produced by us, real humans. But the things that we consider genuine do not actually exist. This really makes you think, what does this mean? Well, for example I am reading this on my laptop, and the letters I am reading an typing are conceived as impulses or energy rather than things. Old photos have been scanned and made digital. Even though we can hold the printed image physically, it has a place in the world. It's occupying space. The mid 1940's has physical presence as well. The images I am about to talk about are accurate representations of a city struggling to rebuild and again some sense of "normality" after suffering destruction of WW2. The damage of the images, like the spot, mold, etc, are eerie but they provide another way to consider what we call "real." All of the things McAvoy captured, did happen. Yet, after the war, the only to you could find was hunger, cold, and depression. His images were taken and transformed into something else that was "ear–abstract, ghostly works, within which one can still see remnants of the robust photojournalism that McAvoy Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Essay on Violence Violence is one of the most problematic issues society faces today, and it has been increasing day after day, in the streets of our cities. The most common description of what violence really is can be given as negativity towards something or someone either through physical or verbal actions, which often causes the victim to suffer pain. The different types of violence that exist in our multi–cultural society are out–numbered, but the most evident ones are domestic, gang, sexual, and racial violence. While violence can definitely be reduced, it will never be eliminated due to the nature of humans. Domestic violence, also known as spousal abuse, occurs when a person in an intimate relationship or marriage tries to dominate and control...show more content... On October 24 2000, a news article headline read, "Gang wars 6 Dead". This event had taken place in Etobicoke, and the news article contained sentences like "Six victims in six months" and "calculated executions". It also contained terms like "Bloods" and "Crips". These terms and sentences have officially crossed the border and have become all too familiar in Canadian cities. In order to cut back this outlaw behaviour, we need to educate our youth about the ill effects of gangs, drugs, guns, and should try to persuade them to instead make friends with those who accept you for who you are and use all their time in doing something positive and proactive. As a result of reducing and preventing gang violence, many cities have created special task forces and given schools their own police officers. Sexual violence is another form of violence that has plagued our cities. This crime involves violence that is specifically sexual in nature, to which the victim does not give consent. According to 2005 statistics, 51% of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual violence. 6 out of 10 victims who reported being sexually violated were under 17. These numbers are alarming and scary. It is extremely important to get rid of such sinister crimes in our communities because it robs the victims of their innocence, self–esteem, confidence, and even trust in our society. • 14. Essay on Child Birth Birth of a child can be such a happy time, especially when the little one is very healthy. We all have seen the movies when a new child is born, some of us are lucky to see it first hand. Some of us do get goose bumps, me being one of them. It is just so exciting to see that little life come out of what has been in that big belly for nine months. We sometimes refer to the birth of a child as labor. If only it was as easy as the name sounds. However, it is not. There are three main stages in birth. The first stage is the longest stage that can last 12 to 14 hours with the first birth, and later births are shorter. Dilation and effacement of the cervix take place here. That is when the uterine contractions gradually become more frequent and...show more content... Getting the most care that they can helps a lot. Even normal babies need the support and to grow a good relationship with their parents to last forever. Although babies spend most of their time sleeping and eating they still have transitions to different stages. For example, reflexes are the most common for people to recognize the organized patterns of behavior. Also, a crying baby is what everyone recognizes. However, it is somewhat good when the baby cries, because it stimulates strong discomfort that the adults can realize. Usually the baby just needs a diaper change or needs to be feed, but sometimes its more and it is the parent's job to figure out why the baby is crying. The parents have to soothe them; they can do this by rocking, walking, swaddling, and talking softly. The baby also is developing their five senses, so it is important that the parents do not interfere with the development. For example, using screaming very loudly can ruin a baby's hearing. Vision is the one that develops the least. Nerveless, newborns can recognize human faces and want the mother's familiar face instead of a stranger. The most widely used instrument for helping the behavior of the newborn infant is Brazelton's Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS). It has helped researchers understand newborns better. The baby's arriving is one of the happiest times for a new parent, but can be very stressful. The parents do have different responsibilities; it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Analysis of the Opening Chapter of Pride and Prejudice The opening sentence of 'Pride and Prejudice' tells is the main theme of the entire novel, marriage. 'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.' The novel is based upon the theme of marriage, finding a potential husband who has 'sufficient funds'. Jane, Elizabeth, Lydia, Kitty and Mary all wish to find themselves husbands so that they can be married off to a man who has a large annual wage and also a large inheritance. In the days of when 'Pride and Prejudice' was set (in the 1800s), inheritance and yearly wage were very important factors which women looked for...show more content... So therefore, he would not wish to marry any of the Bennet sisters. The second sentence of 'Pride and Prejudice' also follows on with the theme of marriage and finding a suitable husband. 'However little known the feelings or views of such a man maybe on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.' This quotation explains to us that the women do not need to know how these men feel or their thoughts. Even if he has just entered the village they (villagers) are all just thinking whether or not he would make a good future husband depending on his wealth and size of his estate. The women did not really care about their husbands, but as long as they provided them with financial security, the wives were happy. Any man could be thought of as a marriage possibility, so this is why this is such a main, important theme for the book. In the novel , the Bennet sisters need to gain financial status through marriage, but Elizabeth does not want to marry for these reasons. Their culture was to be married, but you could either marry for the reasons above, or like Lizzy you could marry for love, which was very rare during this period of time. 'Pride and Prejudice' follows the story of the Bennet sisters trying to find love and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Running Away from Home Adolescence is a time of transition when a person is going through a critical period because they will grow up and become an adult. At that time, teenagers are seeking their identity. In the process of self–development, they usually become very sensitive and susceptible, so they need help and attention from their closest people, especially parents or family. Then, because of their susceptibility they often do something without thinking carefully. For example many teenagers are run away from home, and many reasons that cause them to run away from home. The first cause is abuse and violence in the family, this is maybe the most reason why children run away from home. Physical or mental abuse will cause a serious trauma to them. They will run away because they are hoping out there no one will ever hurt them again. Sometimes it could be because of their overprotective parents or even because of a dissent over curfew. They usually want freedom in their life, but every parent has their own rules. Many of them feel the rules are too curbing them so they decide to run away from home. And then, family conflict such as parental divorce is also one of the reasons they are not comfortable being at home. They will feel unwanted or unloved by their parents. They also feel guilty or blame themselves so they no longer want to stay at home. Sometimes, parents are imposing their will without thinking about their child feelings. For example, many parents do the arranged marriage and always Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. "Despite the ghastly events of September 11, 2001, another September day 139 years earlier remains the bloodiest single day in American History." The opening sentence in James McPherson's book is quite telling. McPherson goes on to describe that around 6,500 Union and Confederate soldiers combined met their deaths at the Battle of Antietam. McPherson's use of death statistics bring the reader into his narrative, and help the reader to begin thinking about the impact the Civil War had on America. According to McPherson the Civil War was constantly changing hands, at some points the Confederates were ahead, and at other times it was the Union Army. McPherson's thesis is that no one battle decided the war, but Antietam was the "event" of the war, and changed the course of the war. McPherson effectively confirms his thesis, by not just including the military characteristics, but also interweaving social and political characteristics that were important throughout the Civil War. McPherson effectively supports his thesis by providing military characteristics about the Battle of Antietam. To first outline this McPherson begins by outlining how important certain bordered were to Union armies at the beginning of the war in 1861. He supports this by noting that Union armies had secured pertinent border states: Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland. The purpose of this was to push Confederate armies out of western Virginia, which then would later become a Union state. The details Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Opening to a Horror Story Essay Opening to a Horror Story They told him the house was haunted. They told him the house was strange. Five families had moved in, and never made it out. Alive anyway. He had already survived two days with his family. His second night in his new home, what could possibly happen? A whispered name. The boy stirs in his sleep. A pale, vaporous moon lights the room. Shadows are deep. He twists his head, turning towards the window so that his face becomes a soft mask, unblemished, colourless. But the boy's dream is troubled; beneath his lids, his eyes dart to and fro. The whispered name: 'Daniel....' Its sound is distant. The boy frowns; yet the voice is within his own slumber, a...show more content... He stands at the door, as if fearing to touch. But he is puzzled. More– he is curious. He twists the handle, the metal's coldness leaping along his arm like iced energy released from a source. The shock is mild against the damp chill of his own body. He pulls the door open and the darkness beyond is more dense; it seems to swell into the bedroom, a waxing shadow. He shrinks away, reluctant to allow contact with this fresh darkness. His vision adjusts, and the inkiness scatters as if weakened by its own sudden growth. He advances again, passing through the doorway to stand shivering on the landing overlooking the staircase. To descend this would be like sinking into the blackest of all pits, for darkness down there appears final. Still the hushed whisper urges: '...Daniel...' He listens for a moment more, perhaps wishing that the minor voice would also rouse his sleeping parents. There is no sound from their room; grief has exhausted their bodies as well as their spirit. He stares into the centre of the darkness below, terribly compelled to descend. The fingers of one hand slide against the wall, as he does so, their tips rippling over the textured wall paper. Disbelief mingles with the fascination and the fear. Small lights– caught from who knows where? At the foot of

  • 20. Great Gatsby Opening Paragraph Essay The excerpt from the text, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, begins by providing great detail through use of adjectives. The opening paragraph has an almost dream–like quality, using phrases and words such as "summer nights" "music" "champagne and the stars". These descriptions provide a great idea as to how the neighbour lives (he is quite clearly an animated merrymaker) who throws a multitude of parties. The narrator in this text is first person, giving the reader the effect of almost being within the story. We travel through the house with the omnipresent narrator, seeing the frivolous food laden tables and a whole orchestra set to entertain the guests for the entire evening. The use of this omnipresence forces the reader to truly imagine the setting, with ornate decorations and an abundance if splendour. The audience gets a view of the lavish lifestyle of the neighbour, while also getting a peek at what it is like to be on the outside looking in, a theme we discover in the first paragraph....show more content... The era was famed for its wealth, opulence and parties (Exactly what the neighbour appears to have and do). The short paragraphs serve to represent his fast paced lifestyle, the details flying past, as his nights do through all his partying. The vocabulary used is quite specialized, using a multitude of adjectives giving an insight on the life of the neighbour. The author has cleverly, through his use of adjectives, made the reader feel the summer atmosphere, and feel the carefree attitude of all the partygoers. This method of using such detailed description forces the reader to feel intrigued, and to want to read on and learn more. These adjectives embody a visual form, and they are occasionally comparative 'Lights grow brighter', 'Laughter is easier minute by minute', 'More swiftly' Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. The Opening Sentence Of Immanuel Kant 's Essay In the opening sentence of Immanuel Kant's essay, "What Is Enlightenment?" he answers the question quite succinctly. In brief, Kant believed that "enlightenment is man 's emergence from his self–imposed immaturity." Furthermore, he added that "Immaturity is the inability to use one 's understanding without guidance from another." I considerably agree with his definitions, yet his annotations on immaturity in relation towards religion, the government, and the way people should live their lives are a bit obscured, impulsive and quite vague. Although I believe people should think for themselves and have an open–mind, I do not agree that that makes them qualified to live their lives without rules, regulations or guidance. The world is continuously changing. Every new age causes for new ways of thinking, new rules, new leaders, even new wars. Things can't always stay the same and they don't. What was okay 300 years ago is not okay today. What is okay today, will not work tomorrow. The world must change because people change. Throughout history we observe the many changes our country undertook; from slave ships in the seventeenth century to the 44th President of the United States, President Barack Obama in 2008. But what causes these changes? What gives people the knowledge and courage to stand for what they believe to be right and justified? And most importantly, what planted the ideas in the minds of people such as Marin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
