6. Starting a Game
MANAGER'SMEETING
At the beginning of a game, 4 balls are lined up along the
center line
Players begin on their respective end lines
Extra players must stay along the walls and may not enter the
court at any time
When the referee blows the whistle to begin the game,
players run up to grab a ball. If a player steps over the center
line, they are OUT.
Players may not throw balls until after the referee blows a
second whistle at the 10-second mark
7. OUTS
MANAGER'SMEETING
A player will be called OUT when:
They are contacted by a ball that has not hit the ground, AND
that ball hits the ground afterwards
This includes contacting another player first, in which case,
both players are out
A player on the opposing team catches a thrown ball in the air
They hit an opposing player in the head with the ball
They duck their head into a thrown ball
8. OUTS
MANAGER'SMEETING
A player is NOT out when:
The ball bounces on the ground, then hits the player
The ball is deflected off them, and caught by a teammate
(thrower is then out)
The ball hits them in the head (unless they duck into the
throw)
9. OUTS
MANAGER'SMEETING
Catching the Ball:
When a player catches a thrown ball in mid air, the thrower is
OUT
If players on the catching team are OUT, 1 may return to
play or “regenerate”
When a player catches a thrown ball after it bounces on the
ground or off of any walls, the thrower is NOT OUT
When a player catches a ball that first bounced off a
teammate and has not yet contacted the ground, the thrower
is OUT
In this situation, even though the ball was caught before
the ball hits the ground, an OUT player on the catching
team will NOT “regenerate” since they “saved”
their teammate
10. Holding the Ball
MANAGER'SMEETING
A player may only hold the ball for 15 seconds, after which
they must throw the ball
If they do not throw the ball within 15 seconds, they are OUT for
delay of game
Players may use the ball to defend themselves or deflect
throws
If the ball is deflected and a teammate catches it, the thrower
is OUT
If the player drops the ball they attempted to use to deflect
another ball, the player is OUT
If the ball is deflected into the player, they are OUT
11. Retrieving the Ball Out of Bounds
MANAGER'SMEETING
If no one is out, ONE team member may retrieve balls out of
bounds
All other players MUST remain in bounds
Additional players that go out of bounds will be called OUT
If players are out, they may retrieve balls for their teammates
Players who are out may NOT enter the court area
They may retrieve balls on their OWN SIDE of the court in the
out of bounds area only
12. Arguing Calls - Unsportsmanlike Penalties
MANAGER'SMEETING
Players who receive 2 unsportsmanlike penalties will be
ejected from the game and the building
Unsportsmanlike penalties include:
Arguing Calls
Deliberately interfering with players on the opposing team
Cursing at or taunting players on the opposing team
Players may NOT argue calls at any time. Period.
Quoted from the Dodgeball Rules:
The calls and determinations of the officials are FINAL. If an official
has called you OUT, you are OUT. Teams that argue the calls of an
official will be warned ONCE by the IM staff. Subsequent infractions
will result in the game being ended and forfeited by the violating
team. The team will then be REMOVED from competition.
