3. The Need for Sustainable Design in China
“Unlike many other aspects of the environmental
movement, sustainable design is a real, practical and
long-term practice that could make a huge
contribution to energy savings and environmental
health around the world--if only architects and
building owners would fully embrace its
principles..….For China, sustainable design isn't
merely an interesting idea. It's necessary for
controlling energy usage in crowded and constantly
expanding urban areas.”

4. The Need for Sustainable Design in China
“China's construction market, which builds nearly
half the world's total new buildings every year, and
by 2020 will account for 40 percent of the country's
total energy consumption......While it contributes 15
percent of the world's GDP, China consumes 30
percent of the earth's steel and half its concrete. On
top of which, buildings in China consume a third of
the country's increasingly endangered water
supplies.“

5. What is LEED?
• LEED stands for “Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design”
• It is a Green Building Rating System™
encourages sustainable green building and
development practices through the creation and
implementation of performance criteria in the
following areas:
- Sustainable Site
- Water Efficiency
- Energy and Atmosphere
- Materials and Resources
- Indoor Environmental Quality
• The total possible LEED points available are 69
(for new construction). LEED Certification is
awarded at the following levels: Certified 26-32
points, Silver 33-38 points, Gold 39-51 points,
Platinum 52-69 points.

6. Sustainable Site
• Channel development to urban areas with
existing infrastructure
• Reduce pollution and land development impacts
from automobile use.
• Conserve existing natural areas
• Provide a high ratio of open space to
development
• Limit disruption and pollution of natural water
flows by managing stormwater runoff.

7. Water Efficiency
• Limit or eliminate the use of potable water,
or other natural surface or subsurface water
resources available on or near the project
site, for landscape irrigation.
• Reduce generation of wastewater and
potable water demand, while increasing the
local aquifer recharge.
• Maximize water efficiency within buildings
to reduce the burden on municipal water
supply and wastewater systems.

8. Energy and Atmosphere
• Establish the minimum level of energy
efficiency for the proposed building and
systems.
• Achieve increasing levels of energy
performance above the baseline in the
prerequisite standard to reduce
environmental and economic impacts
associated with excessive energy use.
• Encourage and recognize increasing levels
of on-site renewable energy
• Encourage the development and use of
grid-source, renewable energy technologies
on a net zero pollution basis.

9. Materials and Resources
• Extend the life cycle of existing building stock,
conserve resources, retain cultural resources,
reduce waste and reduce environmental impacts
of new buildings as they relate to materials
manufacturing and transport.
• Divert construction, demolition and land clearing
debris from disposal in landfills and incinerators.
Redirect recyclable recovered resources back to
the manufacturing process.
• Increase demand for building products that
incorporate recycled content
• Increase demand for building materials and
products that are extracted and manufactured
within the region

10. Indoor Environmental Quality
• Establish minimum indoor air quality (IAQ) • Minimize exposure of building occupants
performance to enhance indoor air quality in to potentially hazardous particulates and
Buildings chemical pollutants.
• Minimize exposure of building occupants, • Provide a high level of lighting system
indoor surfaces, and ventilation air control by individual occupants
distribution systems to Environmental
Tobacco Smoke (ETS).
• Reduce the quantity of indoor air
contaminants that are odorous, irritating
and/or harmful to the comfort and well-
being of installers and occupants.
