1. Living Out Renewed Lives
Good Morning and
Happy New Year Open
Door Family and to our
Guests
2. Living Out Renewed Lives
Romans 12: 1-2
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view
of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living
sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true
and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern
of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of
your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect
will
3. Living Out Renewed Lives
Main Point for Today:
As believers, God’s will for our lives will not
become evident until we sacrificially test
ourselves by choosing a different path than
the path this world offers.
4. Living Out Renewed Lives
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view
of God’s Mercy………
Romans 11:17-21 -- 17
If some of the branches have been
broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been
grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing
sap from the olive root, 18
do not consider yourself to be
superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You
do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19
You will
say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted
in.” 20
Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief,
and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but tremble. 21
For
if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare
you either.
5. Living Out Renewed Lives
1 … to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy
and pleasing to God
Romans 6:13 -- Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an
instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God
as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer
every part of yourself to him as an instrument of
righteousness
Romans 6:19 -- I am using an example from everyday life
because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer
yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing
wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness
leading to holiness.
6. Living Out Renewed Lives
2 … Do not be conformed to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind..
Conformed – An Inward Reality
Pattern of this World – The age we live in
Transformation – An outward expression
7. Living Out Renewed Lives
2 … Do not be conformed to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind..
**Renewal Must Be Biblically Motivated
**Renewal Will Take Time
8. Living Out Renewed Lives
2 … Do not be conformed to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind..
• The Word of God
• Through Prayer
• Through the work of the Holy Spirit
•….. And when these things became priorities
9. Living Out Renewed Lives
• 2 -- ……. then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is, his good pleasing and perfect will.
• Examples – 1 Peter 5:3 – to the Flock
• Imitate – Hebrews 13:7 – their faith
• Practice – Philippians 4:9 – what is learned and seen
• Walk – Philippians 3:17 – in the examples we see
• Trustworthy – 1 Corinthians 4:1-2 – Stewards
• Serve – Mark 10:45 – Jesus – servant / not served
10. Living Out Renewed Lives
• 2 -- ……. then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is, his good pleasing and perfect will.
• Question: What has been the most rewarding part
of care group life, and the biggest challenge?
“the sacrifice we do each week to meet and keep it
going, has grown us spiritually and has strengthened
our marriage”
11. Living Out Renewed Lives
• Find a place to serve – If possible, with your spouse
• If you are single, get a friend or someone with the
same gift, and start serving together
• Consider committing to service in an area for a year
(And don’t be afraid to serve in an area outside of
your comfort zone)
12. Living Out Renewed Lives
1 Corinthians 15:3-8
For what I received I passed on to you as of first
importance[a]
: that Christ died for our sins according
to the Scriptures, 4
that he was buried, that he was
raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
5
and that he appeared to Cephas,[b]
and then to the
Twelve. 6
After that, he appeared to more than five
hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time,
most of whom are still living, though some have
fallen asleep. 7
Then he appeared to James, then to
all the apostles, 8
and last of all he appeared to me
also
13. Living Out Renewed Lives
Main Point for Today:
As believers, God’s will for our lives will not become
evident until we sacrificially test ourselves by
choosing a different path than the path this world
offers.
Notes de l'éditeur
--Thankful to have the opportunity to speak to you today
--Lots of firsts / several out of comfort zone
--Our History at Open Door have provided many teaching opps– 3 and 4 year olds (SS / Awana 11 years), ABF class, and Litchford Nursing (with ABF)
--THIS IS DIFFERENT – You get to hear Dwayne every Sunday, and there are a whole lot of you!
--BUT, you are also family – our family, even if you are visiting, so I am excited for us to study God’s word together today!
Our verses for today – Romans 12:1-2
Why these two verses today?
January 1 and the topic of renewal
My dad – want to do this for him – his favorite verses
Next Slide: Read Romans 12:1-2, then pray
Read verse -- (Prayer)
Before we dig in, just a thought as to why Paul was writing this letter – It is a church he had never visited, and unlike many of the other churches he wrote, he was not trying to correct ungodly living. His main purpose, we think, was twofold. To present the rich truths of the faith (chapters 1-11), and to share practical applications to those truths in the remaining chapters.
Next Slide: **So let’s consider our main point for today’s study:
The main point ‘restates’ the passage in this way.
--I grew up in a home where this thought was not evident. We went to church, and even sat on the front row – but my parents would say we were on the worlds path.
--In college, parents came to the Lord (mom first, then dad)
--They began to choose a different path – friends changed, bible study became important – and they began to serve.
--And they had some testing, not necessarily the kind that lead to death – one thing that had an impact – Dad and announcing (missed few games/my birthdate – Valvano Monday games) – in its own way, it became an example to others.
**They were choosing a different path---
Next Slide – So let’s look into the passage
--Therefore – points to the doxology at the end of Chapter 11 – Since all things are for his Glory – we therefore must offer ourselves (read 11:36)
--I urge, you brothers and sisters – **It’s what we do every Sunday! Dwayne speaks from the word, we acknowledge HIS authority as an ordained teacher of the word, and we know he is using God’s truth. He uses God’s word to encourage us, and to urge change in us! In the same way, Paul had authority to speak, as an apostle and the messenger of Jesus – so these words would have been carrying meaning as he spent countless chapters sharing truths to those in Rome.
--in view of God’s Mercy – OK – we love sharing with the kids what Mercy is and what Grace is
**Mercy – not getting something we do deserve
**Grace – getting something we do not deserve
Olives were an important crop of that time – Trees produced for a long time – some branches would die, and ones from younger trees would be grafted in.
**Paul is saying that we as Gentiles, now can partake of the richness of the TRUE Olive Tree – the place of God’s blessing through Abraham
SO – this is the Mercy of God – that we are NO LONGER subject to the eventual outcome of the Wild Olive Tree – something that we do deserve
Next Slide – Finish out verse 1
There is so much in the end of verse 1, but I want to offer a couple of verses earlier in Romans – Paul wanted the people to understand that they needed to offer their entire self – mind, body, spirit – all that is in a man, completely to God
Verse 13 – do not offer ANY PART to sin
Verse 19 – but offer yourself as a SLAVE to righteousness
I love the sermon on the mount – Chapter 5 of Matthew – Murder and Adultery (OT were outward sins), the sacrifice offering – Jesus took each a step further (both outward and inward)
Next Slide -- verse 2 – this is my dad’s favorite
Verse 2 Definitions – let’s review
Conforming – we all do it, or have done it in the past. It is where we allow ourselves to become part of something (outwardly) that we know as believers (or should know) is wrong (inwardly). We do it out of fear, or wanting to be accepted – we do it for various reasons. (Example – in a group talking about others, yet we do not defend the person not there)
Pattern of this world – simply whatever AGE or time period the reader is in. – the culture of that time!
Transformed – Does everyone remember Bill Bixby? He was a soft-spoken actor – and who would be become at times? The Incredible Hulk!! Something would usually tick him off on the inside – and it would result in a transformation on the outside!! That is the thought here – Paul is encouraging believers in Rome to let their lives be lived out in a way that outwardly expresses the Gospel.
So -- Both Conformation and Transformation are necessary for a Biblically renewed mind
Next Slide – Let me share 2 points about Renewal
So let’s consider two things today about renewal:
Renewal must be biblically motivated
Renewal will take time
My dad loves this verse – this is what he told me the other day – “I went from being conformed to what was politically correct, to what was biblically correct”.
**We all have opinions and beliefs – and we love to argue about them – and sometimes they match up to scripture, and sometimes they match up to the culture! Godly renewal must take into account the truths of God – remember that Paul thought it important enough to devote so much effort in getting that truth to the Romans!
So keeping in mind both an inward and outward expression are necessary components of RENEWAL – what are some practical ways for us to have our minds renewed?
One of my favorite hymns is titled “Turn your eyes upon Jesus” -- it says to ‘look full in his wonderful face, and the things of this world will grow strangely dim, in the light of his glory and grace’.
Next Slide: Turning our eyes upon Jesus is done when we spend time…………………..
Time in these areas – these are very important!!!
And over time – things for me began to change:
Abortion – Jeremiah’s calling; Mary/Elizabeth and John leapt in the womb (and others) – It became a baby**
Father/Husband/Leader for my family – I began to see more clearly what God had in mind for the family – Sally allowed me to lead, even in my weakness
But change takes time!
How many of you are manager’s or sales people? I have read where it can take numerous communications with employees to get them to change behavior – and how about the dreaded cold call. Experts say it take 7 plus calls to get in a door. So we as believers must be as persistent when applying these things:
Next Slide: Finish out verse 2 -- So what are some verses that encourage us in the importance of a transformed life – one that is seen outwardly?
Paul wants us to get practical – how can we apply verses 1 and 2 to our lives?
Consider these 6 points presented in the new testament on ways we can actively test and approve God’s transforming will
--1 Peter 5:3 -- ….’not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock’ (Dwayne example)
--Hebrews 13:7 -- ….’Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith’ (Fred Price)
--Philippians 4:9 – ‘what you have LEARNED and RECEIVED and HEARD and SEEN --- practice these things’ (‘sermon was for me today’)
--Philippians 3:17 – ‘Keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us’ (Mentoring/Discipling – we all need it – Care Groups are a great avenue)
--1 Corinthians 4:1-2 – ‘it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy’ (earned over time)
-- Mark 10:45 –”For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”
POINT – Each of the above verses are action verses – they give us insight on how we need to transform into an effective witness and servant of the Lord
DISTRACTIONS (we have them everywhere today) -- *they keep us from the transformation – the outward expression, the active service we should be giving to the Lord
AWANA – Felt board and puppet show – the real purpose they serve! – they are distractions for the kids – good ones, yet distractions.
Next Slide: We had some Care Groups over……..
Care Group leaders the other night over – I asked “What has been the most rewarding part of care group life, and the biggest challenge?
Answer – let me read “The sacrifice we do each week to meet and keep it going, has also grown us spiritually and has strengthened our marriage”
IN FACT – each said that their marriage had been strengthened as they have served together
Next Slide: So as we consider these passages in Romans, and a new year, and renewal in our lives, let’s consider some practical ways we can test God’s will in our service – so that we are most pleasing to him.
After 3rd point – mention how difficult it was for Sally and me to commit for a year – and it was the best thing we ever did in our lives (laughing at the same things)
--and our girls??? – I find it very interesting in how they speak about us now that they are older – rarely do I hear them ever talk about things they heard us SAY – it is normally something they saw us do. And we included them in much of what we did.
Serving and participating in care group life are two great ways to see renewal and transformation in our lives this year.
Next Slide: And let me close with one final verse – one of the greatest transforming / action based verses in the bible – and it is the Gospel as spoken by Paul
Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-8
Next Slide: So as we consider 2017, let’s commit as a church to walk in the path that brings Glory and Honor to Jesus!!
