The Baton Exchange & the Handover

The Baton Exchange
• In a relay race, there is a MANDATORY
4 laps.
• The 1st leg.
• The 2nd leg.
• The 3rd leg &
• The 4th leg.

MANDATORY 4-laps relay
• For any of the
4 laps to be a
success, the
baton exchange
must be complete
from the 1st to the 4th leg.

The Proper & the Improper handover
• If any leg fails in
Baton Exchange,
ALL the other
legs that did not
fail have also
failed.

The Proper & the Improper handover
• The 1st leg must
therefore
Work Well to
carefully
handover the
baton properly
to the 2nd leg; so that the 2nd leg can also
handover properly to the 3rd leg, so that
the 3rd leg can do same to the 4th Leg.

JESUS…the Christian Baton
• In the same way, God desires that every
generation hand over Jesus Christ, who is
the Christian Baton to the next generation.

God and the 4-Generation Handover
• Ps 78: 5-6-: For He established the law in
Israel which He commanded our Fathers
to teach their Children, …even the
Children yet to be born, That they may
arise and teach their own Children.
• Just like a 4-legged
relay.

• Joel 1:3-: Tell your Sons about it, And let
your sons tell their Sons, And their sons
the Next generation.

The Proper & the Improper Handover
• Q: If our children can not hand over Jesus
properly to their own children, we parents
are the ones at fault. T or F? Why?

Few Examples of what parents handover
either Properly or Improperly
Meditation in the word.
Bible reading and Bible study.
TOTAL faith in the Word.
Preaching the GOSPEL.
Familiarity with His Voice.
Waiting ON /FOR the Lord.
Personal/Family Devotion and Quiet Time
etc.
If we don’t hand over any of these correctly,
we have not handed Christ over properly.

Personal & Family Devotion in our home
• A family that does not make praying
together a habit is NOT handing Christ
over properly to the children.
• Family devotion helps our children
understand how they can spend time alone
with God.
• It helps our children to build their own
Quiet Time with God.

Personal & Family Devotion in our home
• It helps our children in their own Personal
Devotion to God.
• The parent that does not do personal Quiet
Time at home is not handing Christ over
properly to the children.
• The parent that does not know the totality
of Personal Devotion to God cannot
handover such properly to the children.

Personal Devotion (From the Internet)
• Personal Devotion is a time set aside each
day for personal union with God.
• Personal devotions require just a few simple
things: You, God, The Bible, Prayer & Time.
• A regularly scheduled time each day, like
early in the morning, is the best period.
• (MINE)-: In this context, to many Christians,
Personal Devotion = Quiet Time.

Personal Devotion to God
• (MINE)-: But there is a Personal Devotion
that is broader & bigger than Quiet Time.
• Definition of DEVOTION (From the Internet)
-a feeling of strong Love or Loyalty,
-the quality of being Devoted,
-the use of time, money, energy, etc., for a
particular purpose.

• This is more than our own ‘personal devotion’

Q: What does personal devotion to God mean?
A: to give up to God,
- to concentrate on a particular pursuit,
- to devote one's time to God,
- to set apart or dedicate oneself,
- to consecrate;
e.g. She Devoted her life to God.
• (Mine) This is more than the popular
‘personal devotion’

• Being devoted to something means being
focused on that particular thing almost
exclusively.
• When you are devoted to a cause, you work
to achieve its goals.
• When you are devoted to a person, you place
his/her needs above your own.
• (Mine) In this context, we can understand
‘Personal Devotion to God’ as being more
than Quiet Time.

Personal Devotion & Quiet Time
• 1Chr.22:19(NIV)-: Now Devote your heart
and soul to seeking the LORD your God.
• This Personal Devotion is bigger than the
quiet time/‘personal devotion’ we do
every morning.

• When you have no Personal Devotion to
God, your quiet time (‘personal devotion’)
every morning will always be ‘religious’
(i.e. Zero communion with God).
• But the man who has a regular Personal
Devotion to God will always enjoy regular
communion (fellowship) with God in his
‘personal devotion’ in the morning.

• Rom.12:1-: Therefore I urge you, brethren,
…to present your bodies a living and holy
sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your
TRUE worship.
• This means to God, our body as a living
sacrifice daily is a more important
worship than all the worship & prayer we
do during our quiet time (‘personal
devotion’) in the morning.

• Our body as a Living Sacrifice is this
Personal Devotion to God we are talking
about.
• Only a Christian who is personally
devoted to God can obey this scripture
(Rom.12:1) on a daily basis.

• Very many Christians can do quiet time
(‘personal devotion’) in the morning and
still CONVENIENTLY Disobey this
scripture later in the day.
• This is because they have no Personal
Devotion to God.
• Deut.6:5-: ‘You shall love the LORD your
God with all your heart and with all your
soul and with all your might’.

• Only a Christian who is constantly
Personally Devoted to God can attain this
100%.
• 100% Personal Devotion To God everyday
means doing what God loves 24/7 everyday
& every minute, and not just the ‘personal
devotion’ in the morning.
• Q: Who is qualified, raise your hand?

• Every Christian still strives to attain 100%
daily Personal Devotion To God.
• But it is very possible to have Christians with
100% quiet time (‘personal devotion’) 24/7
round the year. T or F?

• David must have done his quiet time
(‘personal devotion’) in the morning of the
day he committed adultery with Bathseba.
• But his Personal Devotion to God was
betrayed the same day when he lied with her.
• His Personal Devotion to God was also
betrayed when he went ahead to kill her
husband.

• It is Personal Devotion to God that makes
a man say ‘how can I do this and sin
against God’ and not quiet time.
• It is because you are personally devoted to
God (Personal Devotion) that makes you
say ‘others may, but as for me personally,
I can not, because it is a sin’.

• Personal devotion to God is Born of Love
for God.
• That we do Quiet Time in the morning
does not mean you love God.
• Very many Christians do Quiet Time in the
morning religiously and still show their
lack of love for God later in the day. How?

devotion’) we do in the morning.

and his heart was Not Wholly DEVOTED to
the Lord his God, as the heart of David his
father had been".
• (Mine) This means Personal Devotion to
God can be either be Total or Partial.
• (Mine) Solomon would still have been doing
‘personal devotion’ every morning.

• 1 Ki. 8:61-: "Let your heart therefore be
wholly Devoted to the Lord our God, …
by keeping His commandments, as at this
day“.
• (Mine) This means Keeping His
commandments DAILY is the Proof of
our Personal Devotion To God & not
just our morning ‘personal devotion’ .
