One of the most convenient technique for Image Registration is Automatic Intensity based Image Registration. Multi-modal images traditionally require the use of information-theoretic similarity measures such as sum-of-the-squared intensity difference (SSD), squared gradient difference (SGD) and Mutual Information(MI). A novel similarity measure known as Cross-Cumulative Residual Entropy (CCRE) based on CRE (Cumulative Residual Entropy), where the cross CRE (CCRE) between two random variables is measured and apply it to solve the image alignment problem has been developed for multi-modal image registration. Here in this thesis we have investigated the use of CCRE for registration of remote sensing imagery. In particular, we investigate the CCRE calculation between different regions of target and reference images producing more accuracy then the conventional method called Mutual Information (MI). Our algorithm starts selecting a number of predefined regions in reference image and our goal is to find the corresponding regions in target image by means of CCRE. For a number of regions each region was tested with all possible regions in target image. For each iteration, at first joint histogram was calculated between two regions. By means of normalizing operation in the joint histogram, we obtained joint probability of corresponding pixel values in target and reference image. Processing the normalized joint histogram we found cumulative joint probability and calculate CCRE for a number of regions in reference image and a predefined region in target image. Among this set of CCRE values in where CCRE value is minimum, we obtain our result in that particular point. We worked with a number of regions and experiment results with different statistical analysis have been presented here. We also performed similarity measure using MI with same dataset. The results were examined in terms maximum registration error (MRE) and it was found that CCRE approach clearly outperforms the conventional MI method. Along with experimental process the subjective aspect of digital image processing system, digital image representation, steps of image registration, transformation parameter selection techniques, different similarity measuring algorithms, phases of our proposed CCRE measurement technique, statistical comparison between CCRE and MI, robustness and success rate of similarity measures are also discussed in a nutshell.
