During this session we will go into how each of the parts of Openstack correlate to the infrastructure pieces in your vSphere environment, and how you can make use of your current vSphere environment with Openstack. The Université Catholique de Louvain has been using OpenNebula in IT academic environment for several years. We were so satisfied that when we decided to implement VDI we looked for a connection broker compatible with this cloud orchestrator. Thanks to OpenNebula + UDS Enterprise VDI joint solution, we will soon be able to give our 37,000 students access to virtual classrooms as if they were in the standard computer classrooms, so that they could access the same software from anywhere, anytime and using any device. The first tests with the solution have been very successful and we are now looking at expanding it to the whole university. In this session we will detail how the VDI infrastructure was built, the different components used and their role in the platform and how the IT staff deploys and manages the virtual desktops. We'll also explain how in the near future we will extend the use of OpenNebula to remote applications.

Much has been written about how to write Microservices, but not enough about how to effectively deploy and manage them. Microservices architecture multiplies the number of deployables IT has to manage by at least 10x. In that world, tooling to manage cloud deployments and related infrastructure becames essential for success. Terraform and Docker are increasingly being leveraged to facilitate microservice environments. Terraform has become becoming the leading coding framework for building and managing change in cloud environments. Attendees will learn best practices for deploying and managing microservices in production. We will leverage true "infrastructure as code" using Terraform. That code is easily re-used and make changes easy. That code makes it easy to deploy and scale software including Docker images. You will learn not only how to establish that environment initially, but how changes can be effectively managed. I'll cover best practices and common mistakes along the way. AWS will be used as the cloud provider, but Terraform operates seamlessly on other cloud environments as well. This session is targeted at architects and team leads. When creating a new Microservice you typically need to add a lot of boilerplate to the code, such as logging, metrics, authentication, SSL, secrets/credentials, etc... All this ends up overshadowing the actual logic of the service itself and results in a lot of dependencies and code. Because of this, we at Soluto created a template for the boilerplate, which worked great... Until we had to upgrade one of the dependencies which resulted in huge effort of code upgrades and deployment across each and every service that uses the template. And that’s besides the fact we needed to make a separate template for each language we used (and over the years, the number of programming languages we use at production increased dramatically). We needed a way to simplify all this. We wanted to get rid of the boilerplate while maintaining the functions listed above. So we decided to delegate the entire responsibility to the Kubernetes infrastructure. In this lecture, I will do a live coding session and show you how to remove the boilerplate from your code and move it to the infrastructure, and discuss the benefits and limitations of this approach.

Machine Learning is no doubt the hottest trend in IT nowadays. Deep Neural Network (DNN), a subfield of Machine Learning with mode of operation loosely inspired by the brain, allows us to solve complex problems such as image recognition that has been very difficult to solve using standard programming paradigms. DNN concepts are not new. However, and until recently, applying them in practice could not be realized due to their high computational demands. With the recent development in parallel computing, especially around GPU acceleration and high speed and efficient networking, DNN has become a reality in modern data centers. In this talk we will describe the system requirements to effectively run a machine learning cluster with popular frameworks such as TensorFlow.
