COMPASS
 NEEDEL
      By Oriol Colls
     and Andreu Vilà
HOW DISCOVERED THE COMPASS
          NEEDLE ?

• In 1820 Orested
  discovered compass
  needle that an
  electric current can
  deflect showing the
  link between
  electricity and
  magnetism.
HOW IS HIS FUNTION ?

The compass needle is an instrument used for
guidance, and its fundamental characteristic
lies in the properties of the magnetic needle.

Its operation is due
to the needle
indicating the
magnetic north.
HOW IS HIS FUNTION ?
• The compass needle is an instrument used
  for guidance, and its fundamental
characteristic lies in the properties of the
magnetic needle. Its operation is due to the
  needle indicating the magnetic north.
HOW TO MAKE A COMPASS NEEDLE ?

• 1. Rub the needle or pin on the magnet always in the same direction.

• 2. Click one end of the needle or pin on a light element and floating.
You can use a small piece of Styrofoam or a stalk of a floating plant.

• 3. Place your chosen float on the water surface making sure that
the needle or pin it dry and is parallel to the water surface.

• 4. Immediately you will notice that the device will turn to sit still.
The remaining site targeted by the end of the needle or pin is
    north.

• 5. To verify that your compass works turn it again and see that it
will point in the same direction: the north!
