The document discusses the Aranya housing project in Indore, India designed by architect Balkrishna Doshi. The project aimed to provide affordable housing for 6,500 low-income families on a 86 hectare site. Doshi's master plan created 6 sectors with distributed open spaces, mixed land uses, and pedestrian and vehicular segregation. The plan oriented buildings for optimal climate response. Housing units started as core structures that residents could incrementally expand based on need. The design focused on community interaction through shared spaces while allowing privacy.

Indore, India in the early 1980’s was facing a shortage of Housing. It had been estimated that approximately 51,000 families were homeless or
living in illegal settlements. The Indore Development Authority initiated an affordable housing project for 60,000 people that would tackle this
issue and at the same time be affordable to the government and urban poor. Previous efforts by the government to provide low-cost urban
housing in India were aimed at supplying ready-built units. However, it took too long to construct a complete house and it became expensive for
the low income group and also ate up too many resources.
As a result, public authorities resorted to two new approaches to housing. First, improving and upgrading the slum area, and, secondly,
providing services sites for new housing developments. Aranya Nagar, a township of 86 hectares, was a planned site, service and core units for a
new housing development of some 6,500 dwellings.
largely for the Weaker Economic Section. This was an integrated approach for 'a sustainable society' where the mix of different economic levels
of society could stay together.
19. 19
Indore is located 556 meters above Mean Sea Level (MSL).
The major climatic factors affecting the nature of built form are solar radiation, ambient temperature, relative
humidity, prevailing wind and rainfall.
The overall climate of Indore can be termed as composite.
In the winter months of December to February the climate is cool-dry, which changes to hot-dry during the summer
months of April to June.
The rainy season begins in July, and continues until September.
20. 20
Traditional settlements have multiple and mixed land use.
The existing slums, although unplanned and crowded, had certain characteristics and language of
settlement.
There were clustering of huts with the formation of small neighborhoods and houses extended to the
outdoors.
Small shops operated within the congested area.
Wherever possible a tree was planted to create a small public space.
Streets were not merely corridors for movement but they also accommodated various social,
economic and domestic activities and in doing so, they enhanced the quality of the living
environment.
The presence of small shops highlighted their relevance in the neighborhood as a means of earning
a livelihood with minimum investment.
The major unsolved problem was the utility services, and inadequate infrastructure which otherwise
affected a healthy environment and well being of the community.

STAGE 4:
Proposed master plan with
interlinked
open spaces, built form
variations, distributed

hierarchies and climate
friendly orientation.
31. 31
The master plan of the township was informal and emphasized enrichment of spatial quality in
the plot layout plan with inter-linked space of cultural context; maintenance of a hierarchy of
road, open spaces, and commercial spaces; a central location of basic community services,
institutional, commercial, social facilities; and the allowance of growth of population density
and house extensions in the context of the Indian lifestyle.
At the six sector level, the aim was the formation of a social compatibility of an interactive
and integrated income/ social group who have attained a viable community in each socio-
economic sector; segregation of pedestrian and vehicular movement and good distribution of
land use and infrastructure; and to reflect local, historical characteristic in built form by
promoting multiple and overlapping interactive land use, maintaining contact with built and
green land.
34. 34
The master plan was divided into 6 sectors with a central
spine area of commercial and institutional land use.
The town centre in the middle of the spine consisted of
four clusters of shopping, residential and office
complexes.
At the end of the spine, two more clusters of social
functions were located. This was a mixed-use zone with a
five storey building.

At the dwelling level, a service core was provided with the prime
objective that the basic house when complete will be sensitive to the
lifestyle of daily needs of individuals with the freedom to integrate
indoor and outdoor spaces with privacy within and from outside the
homes, by designing optional plans.
Priority was also given to the orientation, light, ventilation and climatic
control; to future scope for vertical expansion and the provision of
subletting and commercial options; and the use of appropriate utility
technology, materials and construction methods
39. 39
At the community/ street level, the aim was to produce
a design linking the scale of the built form and the
human scale by incorporating a street life with plugged
cluster houses, sympathetic and aesthetically
complimenting each other and a socio cultural life of
community interaction of families in the “otta” (outdoor
platform). An important feature of the Indian home, at
the service space between house, community spaces
and the cul-de-sac. The street corner spaces are
formed by the alternating arrangement of the road, the
green space, and the pedestrian pathways.
40. • Segregation of vehicular and pedestrian

43. 43
• The net planning area of Aranya Housing Scheme was around 85 hectares
of which 58% was residential use, 23.5% roads, 8.15% open spaces and
6.73% community and commercial facilities.
• The marketable area was 68.16%.
• There were 6,500 plots divided into eleven types in the scheme depending
upon the income level and plot sizes.
• The smallest plots belonging to EWS whose income level ranged from Rs.
200-400 per month was 35.32 sq m.
• EWS plots accounted for nearly 65 % of total plots and nearly 66% of the
entire population.
• Plot sizes ranged from 35.32 sq m for EWS to 613 sq. m for HIG.
44. • Houses have been clustered in groups of 10, separated by open space.
• Each sector has a main pedestrian street.
• Otta, a traditional zone, is provided in front of each house which is located
between private and public spaces.
• Otta are provided as a meeting place or interactive place.
• A septic tank is provided between 2 clusters. A housing plan included two
rooms and a living area followed by a kitchen.
• Lavatory was constructed between the front extension and the melty use
courtyard at the back.
• Most houses were provided with an a additional access at the back, which
allowed for keeping animals, a vehicle or even renting out part of the
house to provide income.
• For interaction of families an otta (an important feature of the Indian home)
when completed will be sensitive to the lifestyle and daily needs of
individuals with the freedom to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces with
privacy within and from outside the homes, by designing optional plan.
45. 45
o For the EWS the options of core housing included-
• Site, plinth and service core (latrine and water tap)
• Site, plinth and service core (latrine and bath)
• Site, plinth and service core (latrine and bath) and 1 room (kitchen).
o For other income groups only plots were sold.
o A verandah or house extension helped in expanding the small EWS houses and
enhanced the space quality.
o A transition zone of 0.5 meters between the street and house was provided.
o Permissible house extensions such as platforms, porches, and open stairs were
built which created an interesting street character.
46. Architect adopted a very objective
approach towards the
incrementality aspect of the units.

o Cost-effective
o Houses built by the people themselves to suit their needs.
o Each family provided with a plot having a water tank, sewerage
connection, paved access with street lighting, storm water drainage
o Service cores - key to this site and service scheme. - nuclei around which
houses were built.
o Septic tank provided for every 2 clusters.
o Water drawn from 3 local reservoirs.
o To economize, 20 toilets are connected to 1 manhole.
o One service line serves four rows of houses
52. 52
• Major alternatives: -
• Sewer-less sanitation.
• Conventional sewerage system.
• The soil being impermeable black soil of 2m depth,
conventional sewerage system was adopted.
• Designed after thorough analysis of topography –
naturally slopes towards NW
• Higher income groups, using more water were
located at high ground level to generate large
flow..
• Lower income groups, using less water located at
lower ground level • This resulted in 10-15%
savings
53. 53
• Conventional and locally available building materials and construction techniques were
adopted.
• The structures were constructed with load bearing brick walls.
• Walls were plastered and painted.
• Floors were cement concrete.
• The CRC roof was always constructed at a later stage because it was a high investment
item.
• The black cotton soil of the site necessitated pile foundation even for simple and 2-
storey buildings.
• Low cost hand made under reamed CRC piles were built for the core house (latrine,
wash room) and the residents were provided with ready built foundations.
• The doors, windows, and grills were made on site by all of the residents who made it
their role.
• Railings, parapets and cornices were made to ornament the house.
55. 1) Model template failed to inspire the inhabitants
Doshi designed a 80 houses as design models for future inhabitants to follow as inspirations for development and extensions.
Doshi’s design drew no inspiration from the Islamic heritage and its achievements and displayed no connection to the major
ethnic group of Indore, Muslims.
Except the originally developed 80 units rest of the 200 acre site was, though intricately planned, never designed and left
dotted with lavatory blocks and plinth beams for future inhabitants to develop according to the model houses; which never
happened.
2) Conceived merely as a one-time design project and no focussed efforts to create a thriving community
Problems faced while creating a community were catered to purely by architectural interventions and
apparently no dedicated efforts were made to humanise the design development.
For instance, units were staggered along the street in order to create interaction spaces to gather and
engage in dialogue and living spaces for inhabitants were created on different levels from terraces to
courts keeping in mind the generic physical and social requirements of humans but the focus was not
given to the ethnicity and economic background of their potential inhabitants.
56. 3) Undesirable site made worse for living through objective design approach
Site for Aranya housing was chosen at the edge of Indore. This was a decision rising from an objective approach for slum redevelopment to push the slum dwellers to a
fresh parcel of land away from the city congestion.
The very basis of a thriving community can not be the architectural setting along and more so in case of a slum development built with an intention to promote
incrementality and public participation. There have to be some mechanisms to support the living of the inhabitants in order to regulate their finances and support and
improve their living standards.
No arrangements for credit and mortgage were put in place to enable the slum dwellers to develop or hold their properties.
4) Unfavourable times challenged the fate of the society and repelled its potential inhabitants
Soon after the development of the housing the long debated Barbari masjid got demolished by Hindu
fundamentalists and created a hostile social setting.
Majority of the property holders at Aranya were Muslims and were compelled to sell their property and
move to Muslim dominant neighbourhoods in search of a sense of safety.
This abrupt migration of inhabitants and as a result of hostile times the housing units were sold at
inappropriate prices as neither Aranya housing could prove itself as a safe abode for the majority of the
ethnic group nor could it keep up with facilities that are needed by a settlement to thrive.
57. Aranya housing saw no NGO activities to encourage community participation.
The slum dwellers never received appropriate funding facilities to buy/develop these incremental units.
No arrangements for alternate employment were created in or around the site.
Water was made available only for half an hour a day.
Potential dwellers were entrusted with a majority of development to be carried with no conditioning and little
support provided by the government.
5) Lack of mechanisms for sustenance
58. 5) Inaccurate estimation of catchment area and unpredictable consequences
Since the Aranya housing could never attract the intended inhabitants, most of its predicted consequences could never be realised.
Slum dwellers never really turned in owing to no support and hostile conditions.
Most buyers that did resort to buy plots, belonged to a different social and economic strata and chose to not develop the units on the basic framework of plinth beams
provided and this resulted in either unpredicted and inappropiate development disrupting the planning mechanisms of the site as a whole or the buyers were left stuck
with a housing unit that the ultiumate users could never develop as desired leaving large parcels of land barren and devoid of any community life as was desired by the
designers.

129. Oil and Mineral Exploration and
Development Corporation
Housing
Location : Joypurhat, Bangladesh
Architect :-
MUZHARUL ISLAM sir.
130. The discovery of limestone deposits
at a depth of 1700 feet, just outside
the town of Joypurhat, led to the
development by the Oil and Mineral
Exploration and Development
Corporation of extensive housing
and related facilities for mining
workers on a large site surrounded
by paddy fields. The famous
Buddhist ruins of Paharpur
Monastery lie 4 miles from the site.
131. The project design followed guidelines of the Planning Commission for Government Housing. Separate housing complexes are
designated for various categories of officers and workers. The common facilities for the families of 2,000 employees include a clinic
and hospital, school, playing fields, a bazaar and a mosque. The plan employs the web of tilted squares explored earlier at
Jahangirnagar University.
132.
133. The major task for an architect in hot-humid Bangladesh is to
allow through ventilation in rooms and to avoid unequal
temperature loads on different walls. The predominant wind from
the south during the summer months dictates an east-west
orientation of buildings, with large openings on the north and
south walls. When a spatial enclosure is created by placing four
buildings perpendicular to each other, the buildings facing east-
west have disproportionately high heat loads and inadequate
ventilation. Islam addressed this issue by tilting the square plan
of the enclosures 45 degrees, and by running all interior walls of
the buildings exactly north south. The courtyard-like spaces
function as play areas for children, meeting grounds for families,
and vegetable gardens. Eight different apartment types are
realised in four-storey buildings. The construction involves load
bearing walls made from handmade brick and reinforced
concrete slabs
