The idea of a convergence newsroom is simple: break down the walls between print, TV, radio, and web, and create a “hub & spoke” model where journalists gather the story, then tell it in different ways through different media.
PRINT + WEB + MOBILE + ????
Media Convergence

Separation 1.
Cooperation 2.
Integration 3.

Rapid Browser

So its not news to any of you that we are in competition for our readers and users time. Newspapers are the best source of news but the advent of 24hr news channels and competitive news websites has changed the way consumers get their news. We have gone from being the best, and sometimes only, source of news to being in fight for the attention of readers
-----------------
We got into this situation because we didn’t see the shift that was taking place in the habits of consumers. Readers were excited by the abundance of news choices in the world.
--------------------
Breaking news, which was never really the property of newspapers, moves to cable and then to online, as more choices develop print seems out of date of many readers.
So lets talk about our market advantage
The question is why are newspapers willing to let readers go to other forms of distribution? We are the the best source of news in our market. The Tribune has 540 editors and reporters working in our newsrooms. We have more reporters that most TV stations have in there whole operation.
-----------------------------------------
The problem for newspapers is that the lower entry cost for news distribution has fragmented the audience. Notice I have said the lower cost for distribution, not content creation. As we know true reporting is expensive. But because so much news is available in so many places, the audience has gotten picky about how they get their news. The balance of power has shifted from us to our readers. We need to find them where they are--print, online or broadcast and reconnect them with our reporting. We are in an age where readers will draw from multiple sources as they craft their understanding of events, we need to be were they are looking.
-------------------------------------------------
Newspapers online are a value added proposition. this what we are here to talk about. The short answer is to give them more than they expect. Go beyond telling them the story to telling them what it means, how it will effect their lives. Think like your reader and then answer the questions they would have. And allow them to participate in the story.
So by now it should be clear that we are talking about doing more than the traditional newspaper-to-online relationship. I am talking about a new structure that allows for the 24 production of news and then distributes that news on the next available platform. We need to create and distribute news in ways that make easy to each the widest possible audience.
--------------------------------
As I said earlier, newspapers have a tremendous advantage over our competitors, we have an abundance of reporting resources.Newspapers set the news agenda, we break stories, we are the best source of information our readers will ever encounter. The interesting fact is that newspapers often have the story first, but because of our distribution platform, printed pages, we are often scooped on our stories. We need to be in the breaking news business online. Remember I said that we publish to the next available platform. Newspapers, online news sites media companies what ever you are, you need to own the story.
