4. Introduction
• Water has become more important in Nigeria
due to rapid population growth, urbanization,
increased efforts at agriculture and industrial
development.
• It is pivotal in agriculture, marine transport,
hydropower generation, industry and sanitation
among others.

6. Completed Projects-1
• Northern Ishan Water Supply Project in Edo State
has a Plant Capacity of 9 million litres p/d to
serve communities of Uromi, Ubiaja, Ugengu,
Ugboha and Iguben at the cost of N2.5 billion
• 10million litres p/d Mangu Water Treatment Plant
at the cost of over N1 billion to serve
communities of Gindiri and Mangu townships.
• 9 dams have been completed in Akwa Ibom,
Katsina, Enugu and Ondo increasing volume of
nation’s water reservoir by 422mcm

7. The Federal Government contributed N2.2billion to the
50 million litres p/d capacity Greater Makurdi Water
supply scheme that can provide access to nearly 1million
people.

8. Completed Projects-2
• Irrigated area increased from 90,000 hectares in 2010
and 175,000 hectares in 2012 to over 200,000 hectares,
leading to increased production of over 400,000 metric
tonnes of irrigated food products.
• Over 400,000 farmers have access to irrigated land, up
from 236,000 in 2011
• Nearly 70% of the population has access to potable
water.
• The population Seven water supply projects have been
completed, providing additional 4.3million Nigerians
access to potable water.

9. Completed Projects-3
• Over 4,000 jobs were created in the process.
• As at 2012, 65.29% of the population had access
to safe water, compared to 60% in 2011.
• Significant progress has been made on major
irrigation projects such as South Chad, Bakolori
Irrigation Project and Galma dam.

17. Water Quality and Sanitation-1
• Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach now
practised in 32 States
• Monitoring and verification of Open Defecation Free (ODF)
communities in 7 Donor States and 8 non-Donor States.
Exercises carried out in July and November 2011 to verify
if communities were actually ODF as reported by the States.
• 3 consultancies procured to obtain information on best
practices and technologies used for Sanitation in Riverine
Communities, Urban and Semi-Urban areas.
• Consultants recommend inventory of Urban Sewerage
Technologies, to ascertain the different sewerage system in
the urban areas, to find out functionality in Nigeria.

• Pilot Project on Off-Site Sewerage Treatment Technologies
in the Semi-Urban Areas of Nigeria.
• Construction of ponds completed on two sites at Ishan, Ekiti
state and Lafiya, Nasarawa State.
• Construction of 6 new laboratories in Sokoto, Markurdi,
Port-Harcourt, Asaba, Maiduguri and Umuahia are near
completion.
• Ongoing water quality surveillance, safe storage and
household treatment project in Ebonyi, Oyo, Cross River,
Taraba, Zamfara and Niger. Being scaled up to 12 more
states (Gombe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kogi, Lagos,
Ogun, Enugu, Imo, Bayelsa and Rivers States )

22. Dams and Reservoir Operations
• Nigeria has a total of 200 major and medium size
dams with total water storage of 34billion cubic
metres.
• Small hydropower schemes have been integrated
into some regional water projects and dams to
generate about 287MW of electricity for the
National Grid.
• Kontagora (Auna) Dam and Irrigation Project
being constructed for water supplies and irrigation
• Rehabilitation of the Goronyo emergency
spillway and the Alua dam are in progress.

23. Inyishsi Small Earth Dam
Imo State
Currently engaged in the construction
and rehabilitation of 33 major dams
and 28 small earth dams. 7 other major
dam projects with a combined storage
capacity of 2,269 million cubic meters
have been completed. Water from these
dams are used for irrigation, water
supply, hydropower, fisheries etc.

24. The Kashimbilla dam project in Taraba State for water supply intended to attenuate flood from
the imminent collapse of lake Nyosup stream in Cameroon has recorded 87% completion
status, will also generate 30MW of electricity is in progress.

27. Ogwashi-uku Dam
Feasibility Studies completed at Oyan, Ikere Gorge, Bakolori, Dadin Kowa, Tiga, Kiri, Jibiya, Challawa Gorge, Owena,
Doma, Waya, Mgowo, Zobe, Kampe, Kashimbilla, Ogwashi-uku, Zungeru and Mambilla shows potentials for hydropower
generation with a total capacity of 3,557 MW

28. Irrigation and Food Security-1
• Renewed effort to accelerate the rate of irrigation
development to enhance food security, employment
generation, poverty alleviation and reduce urban-rural
migration.
• Development of 40 new irrigation projects in all the states
endorsed by the National Economic Council (NEC) and
approved by the president to improve their agricultural
potential through irrigation, drainage and land reclamation.
• Projects will bring additional 76,500 hectares of land under
irrigation and expected to produce about 3 million tonnes of
food crops and provide job opportunities for about 3 million
people.

the ageing of the present farming population.

34. Hydrology, Flood Control and Climate
Change.
• 7 hydrometric monitoring stations with OTT – Duosen data logger
equipment in 6 hydrological areas located at Iseyin, Mokoloki,
Sepeteri, Ede, Ijaka –Oke, Iguoriakhi and Ugonoba completed
• Instrumentation of 11 monitoring wells completed.
• Saline water intrusion studies for the development of mitigation
measures against pollution of groundwater in the coastal and inland
areas of the country was completed in Bayelsa and Benue States.

39. Development Of Transboundary Waters
And Regional Cooperation
• Setting up of Niger Basin observatory for collection and collation of
environmental, socioeconomic and hydrological data and
information to monitor the flow of the River Niger for coordinated
management of the water resources in the basin and riparian
communities.
• Nigeria contributes 40% of the annual budget of NBA
• Development of the Lake Chad Basin Commission Water Charter
for equitable utilization of the water of the Lake Chad and the
development of tools for transboundary water management.
• Nigeria provided $5.0million to support the studies of water transfer
from Oubangi River in Central Africa to Lake Chad for sustainable
development.
• Nigeria is an active voice in NBA and LCBC and continues to
support the African Water Forum (AMCOW).

41. Institutional Changes
• Continued to participate in major professional and scientific engagements such
as World Water Forum in Stockholm, Sweden, World Water Forum Marseille,
France, AMCOW, International Commission on Dams (ICOLD), D8 Water

• In the process of establishing regional controllers of water in the 6 geo-political
zones to inspect, monitor and ensure compliances to standard practice in all
water development activities.
• A new PPP Unit has been set up in order to meet the financial challenges facing
the water sector and carry out sector reforms
• Department for River Basin Operation and Inspectorate has been set up to
coordinate and monitor the activities of the RBDA
• Construction of an ultra modern office complex which will cater to
accommodation challenges and house a modern data centre for hydrogeology,
hydrology, Engineering Workshop and Water Quality Lab for the benefit of the
Nation.

Sector
• 156 rural women and girls were trained in water

• 55 urban educated women and girls trained on public
procurement processes in Lagos centre for southern states
and Abuja centre for northern states
• 160 rural women and girls were trained on entrepreneurship
skills in of Abia, Bauchi, Osun and Plateau
• Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committees (WASHCOMs)
with 50% women representation were established in 40
communities in Abia, Bauchi, Osun and Plateau
