NATURAL REFRIGERANTS

Recommendations

ASHRAE holds a strong position that:

1. The use of natural refrigerants helps to meet growing HVAC&R
demands in a sustainable manner
2. There are still research needs in order to achieve this in a safe, cost-
effective, and environmentally beneficial manner
3. Projects must be assessed in a rational, fact-based, systematic manner
to ensure that environmentally beneficial technologies are not rejected
on the basis of false information or irrational fears.


NATURAL REFRIGERANTS

ASHRAE is committed to

1. The application of natural refrigerants
2. The consideration of natural refrigerants in existing and new
guidelines, codes and standards
3. The provision of guidance and education to policy makers and the
public
4. The creation and dissemination of methods and tools for
environmental assessment of refrigeration systems
5. The publication of technical information highlighting best practices
from a safety, reliability and efficiency standpoint
6. The promotion of authoritative information on natural refrigerants
through seminars and publications


CONCLUSION

• The fear to consider that ozone problem is solved and that practices to
reduce refrigerant emissions are relaxed.

• ASHRAE recommends that decision-makers carefully consider all
environmental impacts prior to taking actions in response to climate
change and continue to emphasize improving energy
efficiency/utilization in HVAC&R technology to minimize emission of
CO2 from energy use.

• ASHRAE has no positions on refrigerants other than natural refrigerants

• In general there is no such thing as ideal refrigerant for all applications.


CONCLUSION

• The selection of alternative refrigerants and their operating systems
should be based on a holistic analysis, including energy efficiency and
performance attributes, environmental impacts, community and personal
safety, economic considerations, and social impacts.
• Even though, the use of natural refrigerants helps to meet growing
HVAC&R demands in a sustainable manner, more research is needed in
order to achieve this in a safe, cost-effective, and environmentally
beneficial manner.
• There are other HFO alternatives being developed but these will all cost
an order of magnitude more per kilogram than the replaced HFC
refrigerants.


CONCLUSION

In general ASHRAE recommends that further research be conducted on:

• Safety, energy efficiency, costs and environmental impact for all
refrigerants using a consistent and comprehensive methodology

• The development of systems and components, which can ensure the
safe application of refrigerants without compromising energy efficiency

• The behavior of refrigerants in operating systems
