  1. Today we’re going to talk about a new category within the Embedded systems market called Intelligent Systems. As you’ll learn this is an exciting and growing category that’s offering real innovation.
  2. This is where the new category of intelligent systems comes in.An intelligent system enables data to flow across an enterprise infrastructure, spanning the devices where valuable data is gathered from employees and customers, to the back-end systems where that data can be translated into insights and action. Intelligent systems represent what we expect will be the future of our business and your business. And as we prepare for that future, there is a critical reality we each have to face. An intelligent system isn’t just a matter of assembling thousands of data-gathering devices. An intelligent system is the amalgamation of devices, software, solutions, connectivity, servers, and analytics that produces business intelligence.
  3. Let’s consider why companies will care about intelligent systems and what value they provide. As mentioned earlier, data is the new business currency. With so many devices generating ever increasing amounts of data, companies may be challenged to cultivate and use the data they have available. What theyneed is the ability to derive intelligence from their data. With an intelligent system, data can flowacross an enterprise, spanning the devices where valuable data is gathered from employees and customers, to the back-end systems where that data can be translated into intelligence for the enterprise. First Mouse ClickTo start, intelligent devices capture data and enable informed decision making at the point of impact. Device types will range in form factor and use depending on the industry and application. But they are all generating data which is no longer just stored on the device but rather connected and shared.Second Mouse ClickAfter data is gather, information flows to a corporationsback-end systems where it is processed and analyzed. These systems can be either in the cloud or on premise. It’s here where the data is being captured, stored, and shared to drive intelligence. Third Mouse ClickOnce the data is collected, then the most important part of the cycle occurs business intelligence. Now the data is translated into new insights that can be used to create value and improve customer, employee and partner interactions. That insight can then be fed back through the corporations systems to drive new behavior and then ultimately back to the devices themselves to drive change at the point of engagement. As this plays out over and over again, you see that throughout the steps in an intelligent system, data has an increased impact and value grows. Once an intelligent system is up and running, a corporation benefits through the creation of intelligence that can be used to drive business impact.
  4. Now that we’ve set the context for what an intelligent system is and it’s growing importance in the market, let’s go a little deeper and look at some of the underlying technical attributes that need to be in place. We see 6 key attributes to any intelligent system. These 6 elements, which we will address in more detail on the next slide, are part of any intelligent system. You will have these elements in some form within your intelligent system. But their level of sophistication and value will depend These are broken into 2 groups – Foundational and Advance.Foundational – the foundational elements include Identity, Security, and Connectivity. We’ll go through each one individually on the next slide but these are the building blocks to even the most basic intelligent system. Without these elements you will have challenges. Advanced – to drive even more business value you need to address Manageability, a strong user experience, and Analytics.
  5. Our approach is based on 3 pillars. Immersive Experiences – User experience encompasses all of the aspects in which users and devices interact with applications and other devices, including touch, feel, design, usability, and how well they fit into the entire context of use. An intelligent system can be made to capture data never before available—from how people touch or interact with a device to voice commands—and can make it accessible to the whole system, rather than just within a single discrete device or solution. The future will be about creating truly immersive experiences where the individual can interact in a seamless, unobtrusive manner and the device or technology doesn’t get in the way.Connected by the Cloud – As I mentioned earlier, a critical component of an intelligent system is the ability to store and manage all the data. Without the storage and management capabilities there is way to build an effective intelligent system. This can be done on premise within your company but we see the future in the cloud. It will be easier to scale and manage and the proliferation of devices will be able to quickly connect and share data. Microsoft will be a leading player in this space through Windows Azure and related products. Smart Devices – The starting point to an intelligent system is the device driving the data. Moving forward the devices will be smarter, faster, and with a variety of form factors depending on the environment. From work to play, the device will be the key entry point and each device’s ability to connect to the cloud seamlessly and offer the immersive experiences will be the ultimate judge of an intelligent system’s success.
  6. Windows Embedded provides one trusted platform enabling you to extend the intelligence of your organization and increase business opportunities. Building from familiar Microsoft technologies and platforms and with access to a worldwide network of partners, you can create, deploy and manage a flexible solution tailored specifically to your business objectives while integrating with your existing systems.Let me walk you through our 3 core competitive advantages one by one:First is One Trusted PlatformWindows Embedded, and the Microsoft technology platform, minimizes risk and complexity by providing one trusted platform with which to build solutions and broaden business opportunity. We know from research and talking with customers that building IT platforms and managing multiple technologies is difficult. The business leaders we’ve surveyed over the past few years tell us that they want to stay innovative but don’t want to always be trying out bleeding edge technology. They want:Support from a trusted, “in it for the long-run” companySecurity – this is a strong concern particularly from the leaders within IT. It’s far too important to be left to chance. Stability and reliability – they want to invest in a platform and know it will work and scale to their needsUltimately the end goal is to ensure the systems work well and help them drive their business. That’s what One Trusted Platform means. Second is differentiation: Fits with Your NeedsWindows Embedded fits your needs - connecting data across a diverse set of technologies, providing compatibility across your existing systems, and enabling customization through a worldwide network or partners – to increase ease of use and drive efficiency.Again going back to the research and customer insights, business leaders want to see any solution to integrate into the company’s network. They want the solution to adapt to new devices and do customization of hardware to fit their business. They are also likely to seek systems on the same platform for ease of deployment and support. Finally the third main advance is around Intelligence for Increased Business OpportunityWindows Embedded extends the intelligence of your organization, increasing opportunities for your workforce to be able to act on data and insights that would otherwise be out-of-reach. How do you gain intelligence through all the data that’s’ been captured on these devices? If the devices are on multiple platforms that don’t align to your needs then you’ll never benefit from a true Intelligent System. We’ve learned that many leaders find the embedded devices market “mysterious” and are not clear on what the devices can do for their business. But they know they need to drive innovation, build better customer and partner experiences, and improve their operations. That’s what all these devices – connected to the right technologies – can offer. They will drive ROI and competitive advantage which is what the business and technical leaders in companies tell us they want. All three elements – One Trusted Platform that Fits your business and allows you to unlock the intelligence to increase business opportunities will help you build a true Intelligent System and help realize true value. And as you’ve seen Microsoft offers a comprehensive set of solutions to get you there.
  7. Since devices are going to be the critical on-ramp to Intelligent systems, its important you choose an operating system that will interoperate with your back end IT infrastructure and work well with the products on the previous slide. Microsoft Windows Embedded offers a full range of solutions to meet your needs.General Embedded:Windows Embedded Standard 7 - Delivers the familiarity and reliability of Windows in component form.Windows Embedded Compact 7 - Powers small-footprint devices with a real-time operating system in component form.System & services:Windows Embedded Server - Brings the functionality of Windows Server® to embedded appliances.Windows Embedded Device Manager - Extends System Center Configuration Manager to help manage embedded devices.Industry and Category solutionsWindows Embedded Thin Client - provides the familiarity of the Windows environment, the rich user experiences expected from Windows platforms and ease of interoperability with existing Microsoft infrastructure to enterprises looking for a security enhanced environment and easier manageability while delivering a product that helps reduce overhead associated with desktop hardware and software. Windows Embedded Handheld - Powers rugged mobile devices for a wide range of enterprise applications. Windows Embedded Automotive 7 - Powers in-vehicle infotainment, communication, navigation and connected services like the Ford Sync product.Windows Embedded Enterprise- Brings the technologies and features of Windows to embedded devices at work in enterprise environments.Windows Embedded POSReady 7 - Builds on Windows 7 but it’s optimized for Retail and Hospitality. It’s a single operating system image for many devices that seamlessly connects point-of-service solutions – like kiosks and check-out terminals - with peripherals, servers, and services.Microsoft Windows Embedded offers a wide range of operating system platforms for you to build upon.
  8. KEY MESSAGETo help you build out an Intelligent system Microsoft has the full range of products to address each of the technology attributes in an Intelligent System. Note: Then walk through each layer and show the different products that support each one. No need to explain each product unless you want. The purpose of this slide is to show visually that we offer what they need. And I suspect that many of you are already running these products today in your company. You have the pieces in place now and are well on your way to building an intelligent system.
  9. As we invest in the future development of Intelligent Systems we will build the product platform I showed you earlier. We are also highly focused on 4 industries – Retail, industrial Automation, Health, and Auto. We will innovate on our broad platforms but put particular emphasis within these areas first to drive additional value to our OEMs and customers.
  10. So now let’s take another look at that the intelligent system that can be built into the medical scenario we looked at earlier. As you can see the range of Windows Embedded and other Microsoft products like Windows Azure, Microsoft SharePoint, and SQL Server, can provide the platform to build a robust intelligent system. [***CLICK***] You deploy Windows Embedded Standard in the:Thin ClientDigital signMRI and back-end processing Windows Embedded Compact 7 is deployed in the:Diagnostic equipmentPortable ultrasoundPatient monitoring The handheld devices in this scenario are managed with Windows Embedded Handheld. The inventory management equipment is managed with Windows Embedded Enterprise. The data in this intelligent system is aggregated and managed by a Windows Embedded Server. And this entire system can be cloud-based with Windows Azure.
  11. Earlier we spoke about the trends in the technology industry that are fuelling the growth and use of specialized devices which in turn is driving the growth of Intelligent Systems.I want to take a moment to outline some reasons why Intelligent Systems matter to you as one of our partners. No matter where you are in the channel ecosystem, Intelligent Systems offers enormous opportunities for you.New device opportunities – New devices and form factors will allow you to innovate into new areas & markets you might not currently be in. For example you may be dedicated to building great POS solutions today, but Digital Signage is one of the fastest growing categories. Building upon your POS expertise you can move into that market which opens new opportunities not just in retail but health, financial services, and many other industries which are embracing digital signage solutions.New service opportunities – Intelligent Systems offer an opportunity to expand your business beyond hardware and devices and start to offer service oriented solutions. If you recall the Royal Caribbean example, that offers our partner there the opportunity to provide additional value added services supporting the whole solution, helping with system upgrades, and building out the data and business intelligence platform that drives the real value. Company growth – the Intelligent Systems market is growing and growing fast. I showed you the IDC forecast. Companies are moving now to take advantage of the opportunity. As you move and adapt to the new opportunities it will help drive your business growth from the new products and services previously mentioned. From supplier to trusted advisor – The crucial point in all of these is how your relationship with your customers can change. When you add more solutions and services to your business, and help your customers build their own intelligent systems, then they will see you as a trusted advisor. They will look to you to help them plan their future technology investments and bring you closer to their business. The resulting upside is unlimited in terms of revenue and company growth.
  12. Before I close I want to summarize what we’ve covered today.
