Doing Business, Wants Less Friction

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who is in Mumbai to participate in its largest ever
consumer conference `Future Unleashed' in the country , praised the Modi
government's record on ease of doing business at a time when sections of the
domestic industry appear to be getting restless with the speed of change.
Addressing a select gathering of reporters here on Thursday , Nadella said his
company wouldn't have been able to realize dreams of opening data centres and
get public sector undertakings to use it in the last 12 months if it wasn't for the
structural reforms ushered in by the new dispensation. “We want more of course,
while at the same time I am optimistic about the rate of change and adoption,“ he
said, adding that he would like to see “less of friction“.
Since the self-confessed cricket fan counts digital transformation and people
empowerment as the company's mission, he is thrilled that his solutions in the
hands of entrepreneurs, public sector organizations and large businesses have
converted into value -both locally and globally .

Cloud platform for startups:
Seen to be more aggressive and ahead in launching its cloud initiative among
its competitors, Microsoft, which is now celebrating 25 years in India, also
announced a cloud platform for startups aligned to smart cities.Besides, it
also disclosed partnerships with three e-commerce companies -Justdial,
Paytm and Snapdeal -to create new marketplaces, experiences and services
for their customers. This is a space Na della indicated he was particularly
enthused about.“Small businesses can take advantage of cloud services,
especially the e-commerce players,“ he said.
Asked if he was open to acquiring companies in the Indian startup space, he
said he was looking at such technology players everywhere and hasn't
narrowed down the search yet. He, however, said that he was impressed
with what was happening in that space in India.

Betting on hardware:
Nadella aggressively backed his company's focus on hardware, saying it helps
it innovate in the personal computing space. He said it would launch
Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950XL phones and its hybrid laptop Surface Pro 4
over the next two months.“We want to create a new category and new
demand for personal computing, not just desktop computing. It can be a
phone that will replace your laptop, it can be the tablet that replaces your
laptop, it can be the band that works on any form, but in fact frees you from
any form. When I look at Apple's new iPad, I think it's moulded with some of
the work that we did with Surface, and we welcome that. We want to make
sure that we even have our software on those devices.“
For Nadella, the devices business is key to creating new experiences where
he doesn't want to be bogged down with margins or market share.

Need more bandwidth:
On the issue of last-mile connectivity or bandwidth in India, Nadella -
the first Indian to helm Microsoft -said his approach was different than
a Facebook or Google. Microsoft is using an innovative technology
called TVWS (TV white spaces), built by Microsoft Research, which uses
the spectrum that lies unused in between TV channels. “My dream is to
come up with technological solutions which can solve the bandwidth
problem at affordable cost under the regulatory regime of the country.“
