7. PACS and RIS
What are PACSes and RISes?
PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) is a system for storage, distribution
and presentation of medical images, e.g. radiology diagnostic images. It acquires digital
images from medical devices, processes them and distributes over high-speed
communication networks.
RIS (Radiology Information System) is a system that stores comprehensive diagnostic
information (radiology reports, diagnostic opinions, etc.), thus complementing a PACS.

Analysis of the European PACS/RIS Market
• Analysts at Frost & Sullivan predict that the European PACS/RIS market will double in the
next six years: its value was €535 million in 2009 and, and they expect it to reach €1,065
million in 2016.
• As of today, 80 percent of European hospitals use PACSes of any kind, whereas RISes
are introduced in only 40 percent of them.
• Outdated RIS modules dominate the market.
• As a rule, there is minimal integration between PACSes and RISes, which increases the
operational costs of the both systems.
• Hospitals are beginning to realize the importance of investing in modern and more
sophisticated RISes bundled with PACSes in one package.
• Hospitals also understand the convenience of buying their RISes and PACSes from one
vendor, which reduces the costs of purchase by 50 percent, and operational costs by 20
percent.

Our Edge over Competition
Advantages:
• More flexibility and minimal response time to
customer requests.
• Lower prices.
• Free connection to medical devices.
• PACS and RIS can be installed as one package or
come piecemeal.
• We can replace the RIS with a system from
another manufacturer.
• We ensure compatibility with a wide range of
analog devices (non-standard video output, CCDs,
film scanners, etc.).
• The product interface can be redesigned
according to the dealer’ or customer’s taste.

20. Technology
Principles of the System Architecture
• Implement the latest Microsoft technologies.
• Use the most advanced middleware: LeadTools and
Genome.
• Ensure maximum simplicity and clarity.
• Develop end-user-friendly products with intuitive
interface.
• Install easily modifiable and scalable systems, promptly
addressing hospital-specific requests.
• Design customizable user interface, adjustable to the
client’s needs and taste.
• Provide networking flexibility: the user can choose
message encoding, enhanced delivery security, as well
as integrate message exchange with transaction flows of
the hospital information system (HIS).
21. Technology
The Means
Our tools-of-choice:
• Microsoft Net Framework as the system platform for its ability to implement all of
the above principles in the Microsoft Windows environment.
• LeadTools Medical Imaging Suite for processing images and DICOM data.
• Microsoft SQL Server (preferably) or Oracle as the database server.
• Object-relational mapping middleware Genome.
22. Technology
The Means
Our data storage preferences:
• In the environment of a small-size hospital, files are
stored locally on the server: a hard drive or a RAID
system.
• In a larger hospital or in order to improve security,
we recommend to store the data remotely, using
SAN or NAS.
23. Technology
Technician’s Version (Simplified)
There is a simplified version of the workstation for technicians to work with x-ray
panels, x-ray film and image plate scanners, and analog video. This version supports
direct connection to the following devices:
• Vatech DR flat-panel, via Ethernet.
• Carestream Health imaging plate scanner, via USB.
• Medical (VIDAR) or office (TWAIN) film scanner, via USB.
• Analog video, including non-standard (Foresight Imaging and Matrox), via the
following types of cables: Composite, S-Video, VGA, DVI, HDMI.
24. Technology
Information Exchange with HIS
Hospital Information System (HIS) has become quite common at hospitals across the
world. If this be the case, we integrate our system with the HIS.
We make sure the following
information exchange will go hitch-
free:
• receiving information about
hospital structure from the HIS;
• receiving information about
patients from the HIS;
• receiving exam data and
appointment schedules from
the HIS;
• sending exam reports to the
HIS.
25. Technology
Telemedicine
Exchange of radiology images between hospitals is carried
out by means of our product, DICOM Bridge, allowing to:
• Connect one FutuRIS with another, or any other PACS.
• Store images, awaiting delivery, in an intermediary
database.
• Send images through multi-thread channels, which
considerably shortens long-distance delivery times.
• Store arrived images in an intermediary database and
dispatch them to a PACS.
Web access to images is provided by either a full version,
working in the Internet Explorer, or a light flash-based
version run in any web browser.
26. Technology
Installation
The system installation can be either piecemeal
or full.
Full installation ensures instant and total
elimination of physical paperwork, but requires
thorough preparation and – the toughest one –
readiness of every worker to accept and adjust to
changes. Full installation generally takes two to
four months.
Piecemeal installation is characterized by:
• gradual proliferation of the system within the
hospital;
• stepwise expansion of the capabilities of the
server components;
• stepwise increase in system functionality
along with the development of new functions,
for each room may have a specific
requirement.
27. Technology
Installation
While planning a project, we take into account the
volume of the document flow and the
requirements a hospital sets forth for the data
structure.
Our design allows for the development of
custom-made modules, implementation of
hospital-specific functions, and installation of
specialized equipment.
We also develop templates for medical and
statistical reports.
If there is a PACS/RIS package already installed
in a hospital, we can easily feed its data into our
system. We can even integrate our system with
another PACS, if need be.

Training
Training of medical personnel is conducted on-site.
It is necessary that physicians be acquainted with
computers, either self-taught or by attending
computer classes. The personnel in each
department are given an 8-hour course which
enables doctors to perform standard operations with
the systems.
Moreover, every workstation is supplied with a copy
of Quick (standard operations) and Comprehensive
(all functions) User’s Guide.
30. Support
Training
Training of technical personnel is
conducted during the entire system
installation period. The system is
supplied with the Installation and
Administration Manual that describes
just standard actions: installation,
management and troubleshooting.
If the IT department intends to design
medical and statistical report
templates, we can offer an 8-hour
course (they must be already familiar
with basic system tools). Additionally,
we supply the department with the
Medical/Statistical Report Developer
Manuals.
31. Support
