1. Introduction
The following thesis highlights information on Nike, Inc. (NIKE) in Singapore which includes the
PESTLE framework, Porter's Five Forces and strategic suggestions for the company.
1.1 Company Background
Nike, Inc. is an American international ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With that being said, it exerts pressure to the company as customers will hold a certain degree of
bargaining leverage as they can easily switch to other competitors so as to be able to gain more
profits for themselves. As a result, Nike will have to lower their product price in order to retain and
attract more customers. Hence, the high buyer power poses as a threat for the company.
3.3 Competitive Rivalry
Intense competition from established and new sportswear manufacturers and accelerated changes in
technology and consumer preferences in the industry for sportwear can potentially threaten Nike's
share growth. Nike competes with a significant number of companies, including Adidas, Under
Armour, V.F. Corp., Puma, among others. Vertical retailers that design and manufacture their own
products such as Lululemon Athletica and Uniqlo also plays a part in the competition for Nike.
However, Nike is currently ranked first as the world's most valuable sports brand and its largest
competitor, is Adidas. Nike currently has a Market Cap of $65.87 billion while Adidas has only
$22.76 billion (Forbes, 2014). Although Adidas is presently losing out to Nike in terms of sales and
market share, it intents to implement new strategies so as to grow (Forbes,

External Factors Of Under Armour
I chose Under Amour as I enjoy using their products and feel aligned with their values. After
working in the health and fitness industry I began purchasing their products: I liked their aesthetics,
quality, and the branding that one didn't have to be a sports athlete to participate in their brand.
Additionally, I felt they represent women more in their items and have a campaign to fight breast
cancer which is a cause close to me. Under Amour also has a line dedicated to the Wounded Warrior
Project and another to helping children in underserved communities. Thus, their fashionable and
quality products were how I became a customer and their social work has me appreciate them and
these factors had me believe they would be interesting to examine ... Show more content on

The corporate tax rate has just decreased from 35% to 21% which is good news for UA but not as
much as companies that do more business in the US and also for a company that has significantly
less debt than the highly leveraged Under Armour has (The Economist, 2018). Social factors are
quite important for the retail industry and in 2017 a large demographic for clothing sales, teens,
spent less overall and claimed Under Armour a brand they did not wear and athleisure in general to
not be preferred attire anymore (Reagan, 2017). Thus, Under Armour's demographics changed just
in the last year with teenagers claiming to not be wearers of the brand, and also the trend of
athleisure coming to an end. Technology is an external environmental factor that affects Under
Armour, but not as much its competitors in the industry. When fitness bands were introduced the
company also came out with their own line of bands that proved unsuccessful and were discontinued
(Booton, 2017). Under Armour maintained their fitness apps however and they are able to have an
edge over their competitors by having all of this information

Pros And Cons Of National Service
NS is an acronym that stands for National Service and it is defined as "The system in some countries
in which young people have to do military training for a period of time." [remember do citation.
Taken from oxford dictionary online]. National Service in Singapore is compulsory for all able–
bodied male citizens and permanent residents who have reached the age of 18 years. They are
required to serve in the army for a period of two years. However, a majority of the male citizens or
permanent residents are allowed to defer their National Service till they have completed their
tertiary education e.g. Junior College, Polytechnics, and Institute of Technical Education (ITE). All
Singaporean male citizens or permanent residents will enter National Service at the ages of 18 to 21
years. Over the span of the two years in the army, all males will undergo rigorous training so as to
be physically fit, and combat ready at all times. (iprepNS) Prior to National Service, there are

Medical Screening also give a clear indication of one's physical fitness and health which will help in
assigning an appropriate Physical Employment Status (PES) to individuals. Pre–enlistees will then
be allocated to a vocation that is best suited for them based on their PES. PES grading are given
from A to E. Pre–enlistees will also have to take a Manpower Aptitude Assessment System
(MAPAS) test to evaluate their mental abilities using several tests such as psychomotor assessment
which deals with the physical movements based on the functions of the brain. The MAPAS test
alongside with the PES assist in the determination of the vocations that is best suited to their
physical and mental abilities and allow pre–enlistees to maximize their full potential.

Pestle Analysis
"Internal and External environmental audit" of the automobile industry in the UK using PESTEL
and SWOT frameworks.
Britain's automobile industry dates back to the late 19th century, when Daimler began
manufacturing cars. Today, the UK is a major automobile and automobile part manufacturing hub
and home to seven major car manufacturers. It produces a wide range of standard specification,
premium and specialist vehicles, including Formula One cars and sports vehicles.
An analysis of the industry using the PESTEL (Political, Economic, Social, Technological,
Environmental and Legal) framework is carried out below:
Political: The automotive industry has always received political support on account of several
factors such as employment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The industry has made significant progress in innovations in fuel alternatives, fuel–efficient cars and
tyre pressure monitoring in a bid to conserve fuel. Manufacturers also arrange to recycle End of Life
vehicles (ELVs) which have been scrapped. Besides recycling of waste, this solves landfill
problems.
Legislation: The automobile industry is subject to national, international and EU regulations
concerning environmental issues discussed earlier, manufacturing and safety standards. From 2014,
cars manufactured in the UK must be equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) mechanism
in order to control skidding. Another initiative which will also help to increase fuel efficiency and
prevent accidents, the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) will serve to alert drivers to sub–
optimal tyre pressure. All car brands need to be SENTA approved – a uniform EU standard without
which vehicles can neither be sold nor registered. Manufacturers can also avail tax credits for
adopting and adhering with emission norms.
SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis
Strengths: The main strengths of the industry are an extended manufacturing base, availability of
skilled workers and membership of the EU. The absence of trade barriers between EU member
countries facilitates exports, a significant fact since customs duties account for as much as 20 per
cent of the vehicle cost. The country also has the technological expertise and infrastructure to make

Introduction
This paper applies Hall and Hofstede's cultural frameworks to two video's that involve doing
business in foreign countries. Hofstede's five dimensions of culture are Power Distance,
Individualism and Collectivism, Uncertainty Avoidance, Career Success/Quality of Life
(Masculinity and Femininity) and Confucian Dynamism. Hall's four dimensions of high and low
context frameworks to culture are Relationship, Time, Communication and Space. Each video is

In Singapore, the head of family owned businesses is the only decision maker. Success, prosperity
and acquiring education are virtuous behaviors in Singapore. Business cards include academic
degrees and are handled with care, using both hands which show respect for the one giving it. The
"golden rule" must prevail in Singapore. Phangshai or harmony is of great importance. The elements
of harmony can be very detailed, including the setting in a conference room, how chairs are
arranged, or even how the building faces.
Hall's High or Low Context Cultures
Singapore appears to be a high context cultures as outlined below: 1. Relationships
Relationship is more important than bottom line. There should be no clear winner or losers in
business transactions. Negotiations must be conducted in a non–confrontational manner and result in
a "win–win" for both parties. 2. Time
Singapore has a long–term business perspective. Relationships must develop before business can
take place. 3. Communications
Communications in Singapore are somewhat implicit. Saying yes doesn't necessary mean yes. It
could be yes, I hear you but I don't agree. One needs to probe and ask questions to ensure the
meaning. 4. Space
Space is clearly divided between in–groups and out groups.

How Successful Is Singapore in the Sporting Industry
I. Introduction
The body of this report is divided into two main sections. The first part addresses the main sports
development in Singapore and the second assesses these developments and sheds light on problems
encountered in the related developments.
II. Sports Development in Singapore
Much of Singapore's economic success has been attributed to its status as a world–class commercial
and trading centre. In the past century, the government has focused most of the nation's policies to
boost its economy and establish the country's reputation in the global market. There were sparse
efforts to refine plans and raise its sports profile. The report from the Committee of Sporting
Singapore (CoSS) in 2001 stated that sports in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2. The World Stage and Gaining International Recognition
The 21st century marked a great sporting decade for Singapore as the country gained many
opportunities to showcase herself globally. The most evident milestone came when Singapore won
the bid to host the 117th International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in 2005. The nation
displayed its capability to organise international events with great efficiency and impressed the
delegates from around the world. Thereafter, it was announced in 2008 that Singapore won the bid
to host in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.
In the years that followed, Singapore has attracted major sporting events such as the Formula One
Grand Prix sole night race, the first Asian Youth Games and other World tournaments of various
sports such as Badminton, Netball and Table Tennis are scheduled to be held later this year. Such
international spotlight on the nation inspires and challenges the local athletes to put their best foot
forward in pursuit of sports excellence.
2. Nurturing Athletes for Sports Excellence
The committee has initiated several programs to groom athletes in achieving sports excellence.
These include the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme (FST) and the Sports Excellence Talent Elite
Athlete Management (spexTEAM) program. The FST is a scheme where sports officials scout for
non–Singaporeans who have potential sport talents and facilitate their migration to the

Porter argued that the organization can be divided into a series of primary value adding activities
and supporting activities. The primary activities include:– Inbound logistic, Operation, Outbound
logistic, Marketing and sales, and Services. The support activities include:– Procurement,
Technology development, Human resources management, and Firm infrastructure.
Porter's Value Chain will be used as internal scanning to analyze the strength and weakness for
AirAsia systematically by analyzing all 9 activities.
a) Inbound Logistics
AirAsia has placed an order of 175 units Airbus A320 to service its routes (AirAsia Berhad 2007
Annual Report). Airbus A320 is less fuel consumption compared to Boeing 737–300 aircraft.
Ultimately Boeing 737–300 to be retired and replace with Airbus A320 to overcome the increase of
oil price by structurally reduce cost and enhance customer services with better quality aircraft.
AirAsia pursue simplicity in operation by operating a single aircraft fleet. All the aircraft can share
to use the same tool, spare parts and same skilled manpower for maintenance and repair purpose;
compared to maintaining different aircraft, it may need many different special tool, spare part and
required more manpower for different aircraft. This will help to reduce the stock of part
maintenance, less training for employee and servicing cost.
b) Operation

In 2000 the Compulsory Education Act codified compulsory education for children of primary
school age (excepting those with disabilities),[5] and made it a criminal offence for parents to fail to
enroll their children in school and ensure their regular attendance.[6]Exemptions are allowed for
homeschooling or full–time religious institutions, but parents must apply for exemption from the
Ministry of Education and meet a minimum benchmark.[7] The main language of instruction in
Singapore is English, which was officially designated the first language within the local education
system in 1987.[8] English is the first language learned by half the children by the time they reach
preschool age and becomes the primary medium of instruction by the time they reach primary
school. Although Malay, Mandarin Chinese and Tamil are also official languages, English is the
language of instruction for nearly all subjects except the official Mother Tongue languages and the
literatures of those languages; these are generally not taught in English, although there is provision
for the use of English at the initial stages. Certain schools, such as secondary schools under the
Special Assistance Plan (SAP), encourage a richer use of the mother tongue and may occasionally
teach subjects in Mandarin Chinese. A few

The Impact Of The Commonwealth Games 2016
Based on the regional and national economic impact, environmental impact, social impact and best
of government funds. It is the evidence that allows the government to decide to be held the
Commonwealth Games 2018 at Gold Coast. At the moment, the money that the government spend
on the construction are billion dollars but it can create more than 10000 jobs for the Australian and
other potential benefit that the government will get in the future are very big. Because based on the

Further about environment impact GC2018 is leveraged to encourage Australian and Gold Coast
communities to implement more sustainable practices, such as reuse and recycling. If the Australia

the recycling it can savage the material and protecting the environment. In addition, it can be saving
the money. Recycling is very important as waste has a huge negative impact on the natural
environment. Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from rubbish in landfill sites.
Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste. As recycling saves energy, it also reduces
greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle climate change. One of the decision that the
government have make is the Queensland Government, in partnership with the City of Gold Coast,
designed Trade 2018 is to strengthen trade and investment ties across the Commonwealth and boost
the City of Gold Coast's and Queensland's international business profile. The program will focus on
seven priority Commonwealth markets – United Kingdom, Canada, India, Singapore, Malaysia,
New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Central to this aspiration is Trade 2018 which focuses

Note: – At the start of the analysis we used diamond theory by Prof. Michael Porter to answer the
million dollar question? Should Gold's Gym concentrate expanding across borders if so? If so, does
it have the necessary competencies to achieve that?
We have concentrated more on political analysis because of the novelty of the operation.
Political/Legal Analysis
1. Political Stability
Political uncertainty/instability is considered an investor's worst nightmare. This influences the
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by companies in to a particular country.
With permission from Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC), we used Political Hotspots Map software
(created by PWC in collaboration with Eurasia Group) to identify the political risks of a country.

Singapore received a score of 6/6 with a high political stability rating. Malaysia received a score of
3/6 with a medium–low political stability rating due to recent political uncertainties. Indonesia
received a score of 2/6 with low political stability rating.
Political stability results in extension of government policies which enable companies to predict and

Globalisation Is a Blessing for Singapore
"Globalisation has been a blessing for Singapore's development."
The world we live in today is characterised by globalised markets and a merciless pace of change.
Powered by relentless technological advances, the forces of globalization have undoubtedly driven
the ever–accelerating expansion in economic activity and capital flows, even opening previously
closed sectors and countries. The economies of countries are becoming increasingly integrated with
one another. Indeed, living in today's globalised era, no country has been untouched by the
expanding and influential force of globalization. Singapore is no exception, as evidenced by her

Another benefit is the improved standard of living in Singapore. HDB flats ––––even
condominiums––––– have replaced the dilapidated slums that used to be commonplace when
Singapore was merely a fishing village. With the improvement in the transportation system, MRT
stations and the Port of Singapore, including the Circle Line, were established, leading to an
increased convenience in travelling. Even the Singapore Changi Airport has been recognised by the
global cargo industry as the Best Airport in Asia. It is no wonder that Singapore emerged as Asia's
best location to live, work and play in the Mercer 2008 Quality of Living survey.
Yet, there are Singaporeans who argue that globalization has hindered their country's development,
placing doubts on whether their fellow Singaporeans will still remain rooted to their nation after
migrating to other countries. Whilst Singaporeans venture for jobs overseas, foreigners will also
migrate to work in Singapore, some of whom have decided to become Permanent Residents (PRs).
With these foreigners bringing their own cultures and values, together with the exodus of local
Singaporeans, social cohesion may be adversely affected. Singaporeans have also expressed concern

E–Government in Singapore
The Vision of E–Government E–Government is defined as the use of information technology, in
particular the Internet, to deliver public services in a much more convenient, customer–oriented,
costeffective, and altogether different and better way. [Holmes, 2001 cited in Hughes (2003: 182)]
The concept of e–Government is enhanced by the vision of the Singaporean government, which is to
become a world leader in e–Government and to better serve the community and the nation (IDA
2004). The Singaporean government has engaged e–Government to re–examine(s) the organising
principles of bureaucracy and governance, re–define(s) the objectives and deliverables of
government and re–deploy(s) the resources available. (Mahizhnan and Andiappan 2002: 250)
It is not only the addition of an "e" to the word "government" (Khaw 2002: 3) that has caused e–
Government to flourish. The government has had to challenge itself and to change the ways it thinks
and operates in order to continually develop, sustain and improve the operational processes of the
public services (IDA 2000). The Objectives of e–Government Due to advanced technology and the
high level of investment in Research & Development (R&D) since the 1980s, Singapore has gained
a reputation as a regional technology–hub and has nurtured an ambition to become the world

you think of an all–American male riding on the open roads of the United States. It is an iconic

Etihad Airways Marketing Mix (Case Study)
Etihad Airways Etihad Airways is considered as one of the youngest airlines in the world, yet it
managed to seize a leading place within the aviation industry. Etihad Airways received the 2008
Marketing Award of the "Airline Strategy Awards", one of the most recognized awards in the
industry, just five years after starting commercial operations, followed by many international
awards. This early success can be attributed to the marketing strategy employed by Etihad, which
resulted in creating a strong brand associated with a high quality service. Etihad's marketing strategy

Etihad Airways on its fleet determined to Abu Dhabi Australia route, consists of, sevenA340–600
Airbus with 292 passenger capacity, and V Australia the international carrier of Virgin Blue with its

have lower operating costs that would have effect on the fare price. For that reason, Etihad has to fill
most of the seats on the plane in sense of covering the operational costs. Depending in two
variables: 'Load factor' the plane seating capacity that is actually sold, whereas, it was 74% for this
route in the last year, and 'Yields' the revenue obtained for flying one passenger over one kilometer,
while it increased by 20.1% year on year. Hence, using the load factor by Etihad as an indicator by
its marketing department supporting its pricing strategy, hence the high load factor over (85%) is
considered as a sign for Etihad to focus on low yields. For instance, by offering lower prices for this
route, as the number of seats sold goes up depending on the effectiveness of its promotion activities
the fare goes down. However, it has to cover up the operational cost either by high or low fare prices
for its profitability. Moreover, usually it happens that two passengers

Asia's fashion and apparel market will continue to grow at a healthy clip through 2011–2015. The
reason why we focus on Asia area is because as forecast last year, clothing demand in Asia is higher
than the demand in Western Europe and North America in 2011 [Appendix 2]. "Many economists
predict that demand will be driven by rising personal disposable income levels and an increased
focus on fashion apparel, especially in the main cities." Said by Carrie Yu. As we known, many
foreign apparel brands are already present in Asia, and they will spread steadily. Here we have a
figure to show the market demand growth in different Asia countries [Appendix 3]. After analysis
the data and GDP per person at purchasing–power parity [Appendix 4], we choose three countries–
Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong–that are good for Hollister to expand in. Three Study Countries:
Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong Japan Our first choice is Japan. Here we have two reasons to
support our idea. First of all, it goes without saying that Japan is one of the most potential countries
in Asia. For years, Japan has been Asia 's richest and most powerful economy. It was the first Asian
economy to industrialize, and the emerging Asian tigers–Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea.
There are three advantages for Japan to become a good expansion country. Firstly, the economy of

The Pros And Cons Of IR In Singapore
Introduction:
Global City – Its simple definition is that it is a city that is an important nodal point in the global
economic system.
Singapore is both a city and a nation–state. This complicates matters. Most foreigners think of
Singapore simply as a city. But most Singaporeans think of Singapore in national terms. This, by
default, has had the unintended side effect of causing some fissures in the national fabric. It is
possible to be both a global city and a nation–state. But it could be argued that the global city project
pursued by Singapore has come at a heavy price for the nation–building project.

IR Approval Process:
Since there was controversies among public and members of ministry in establishing IR in
Singapore, the government had to go with a specific process to evaluate the pro and cons in
establishing IR.
As a first step on this, the government had called for a Request for Concepts (RFC). This is a
process whereby interested bidders would present concept proposals for the IR. There is no
compulsion for the government to agree to whatever said RFC. If the government feels that the IR
concept is not feasible or positive, the government had all the rights to say No.
The result of RFC was a success. Many of the bidders were leading companies in the industry which
had built high quality IRs elsewhere, and had solid track records and international reputations to
protect. This helped Ministers to understand the concept of IR better.
The economic point of view for IR establishment not only viable in Singapore but there was a major
market opportunity waiting to be tapped. However an idea which has great positive impact cannot
be encouraged. Singapore needs to check on Social issues too in addition to this.
For this they proposed 5 methods in minimize the social impact created by the establishment of IR

How Chinese Dominated Sports Played the Role of...
The amusement parks played a nostalgic role amongst the Chinese Singaporeans for their total
entertainment experiences. However, in Gay World Amusement Park, its indoor stadium is
sentimental to many Chinese Singaporeans. Over the years, Singapore had advocated towards being
a world class sporting arena, especially with the hosting of Youth Olympic Game in 2010 and the
opening of the new Sporting Hub this year. To see the development of sports over the years, this
paper tries to understand how Chinese dominated Sports such as Basketball and Table tennis played
the role of entertaining the Chinese community between 1970s and 1980s.

They provided a communal platform for the multi–dialect Chinese community to come together for
leisure.
Interestingly, the introduction of the amusement parks in Singapore got influenced from China in the
early days when amusement parks were originated from Shanghai (Chan and Yung, 2005). This
demonstrates the connection between the Chinese Singaporeans and the Chinese community from
Mainland China. In addition, it is mesmerizing to scrutinize how the introduction of the amusement
parks were well–accepted by the local community, through transformation and localization of the
parks for the multi–cultural Singaporeans.
Gay World Amusement Park
Gay World Amusement Park was opened in 1937 by George Lee on a plot of land between Geylang
and Mountbatten Roads (Thimbuktu, 2011). Unlike the other two amusement parks, Gay World
Amusement Park was a sporting arena. It was famously known for its octagonal shaped indoor
stadium, known as Gay World stadium or Geylang Indoor Stadium, in which it was the largest
sheltered stadium in Southeast Asia (Omar and Rahman, 2005). According to the photograph
(Figure 1) from National Archives of Singapore, the satellite imagery of the site showed a prominent
octagonal shaped ring situated in the amusement park. In addition, from the imagery, the site
labelled with a letter "F" was where Gay World Hotel located. Gay World Hotel was located at the
opposite of the Amusement park.

Emirates Airline: Connecting the Unconnected
Introduction
Late afternoon was fading to dusk as Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, gazed out at the large
crowds mingling outside at the 2013 Dubai Airshow. Front and center at the event was the official
program launch of the Boeing 777X, a massive new hit thanks to Emirates' record order of 150 new
planes. Valued at $76 billion at list prices, this was the largest airplane deal ever inked. Letting his
thoughts drift, he noted, he imagined with pride these planes joining the collection of widebodied
Emirates planes assembled on the tarmac of Dubai International Airport, ready to ferry passengers

As the sunset reflected its dying rays on the aircraft on display, he pushed these thoughts to the back
of his mind and returned to the event at hand.
Aviation in the Middle East
The 1980s aviation market in the Middle East was dominated by Gulf Air, a regional carrier backed
by the states of Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the emirate of Abu Dhabi. While several European
carriers serviced the region, the overall market was small and Gulf Air maintained a high market
share. The majority of its flights emanated from its four hub cities to points in the Middle East,
South
Asia, and Europe, primarily on a point–to–point network.
As a non–core city for Gulf Air, Dubai experienced reductions in air service in 1985 that compelled
Dubai's leaders to launch its own airline. Local airline expertise was minimal, so the royal family
commissioned a small team of expatriate airline veterans, helmed by Sir Maurice Flanagan, to
charter the service they named Emirates. Divisional Senior Vice President (SVP) of Corporate
Communications, Marketing & Brand Boutros Boutros remarked, "Locals or expats, management
all had the same outlook and shared mentality, which ultimately helped build a successful and
cohesive executive team."6 Armed with only two planes and $10 million in seed capital provided by
the
Government of Dubai, the airline initially developed a regional focus to connect underserved
markets. Emirates

A company's accounting department may perform financial statement analysis throughout the year
or at a specific point in time, this refers to the time frame.
Financial statement analysis is a significant business practice because it helps top management
review a corporation's balance sheet and income statement to gauge levels of economic standing and
profitability. Also, financial statement analysis may be pivotal for management to understand levels
of cash receipts and disbursements in corporate operations. A statement of cash flows lists cash
flows related to operating activities, investments and financing transactions. A statement of owners'
equity may help an investor identify a company's shareholders.

Future Predictions
By 2020, the population of global higher education students is expected to increase by
approximately 21 million to 190 million students. Of those, it is expected that the demand for an
English language–based post–secondary education will increase by 750,000 (Ruby 2013).
Information compiled by Alan Ruby indicated that, of the students in this category it is Canada's
goal to recruit approximately 210,000 students; Australia hopes to obtain around 100,000 students;
the United Kingdom could enroll 30,000 students; if the United States gained its current market

Finding a willing entity to provide space or collaboration may prove a complex endeavor (Lane
2013a).
In order to save money and reduce branch start–up time, some institutions have elected to join an
educational hub. These campus hubs are partnerships between several international branch
institutions and share facilities and services such as student residences, food services, libraries, and
medical facilities. Institutions participating in a hub can also benefit from joint branding and
recruiting efforts. The level of cooperating inside each hub will vary; this model may necessitate
compromise regarding an institution's standards and expectations (Stanfield 2013). In one example
of a hub, Education City in Qatar, students are able to cross–register for classes between
participating institutions. This practice could be beneficial to institutions hoping to offer
undergraduate programs (Stanfield 2013).
The wholly owned model is being replaced by a partnership with joint ownership and operation with
a host country university. This model reduces the financial risk of the exporting country
(Homayounpour 2012). China has made is clear that this will be the preferred model for
international branch campuses moving forward. In fact, the Ministry of Education in China
mandates that foreign institutions form a legal partnership with a local Chinese university (Stanfield

Another factor of substantial importance which plays an active role in nation branding is how the

Hosting the 2006 Soccer World Cup catapulted Germany to the top of the NBI in 2007 and 2008 ...
Yes indeed, but as I predicted, the effect didn't last very long. Enhancing a country's image is a relay
race, not a sprint, and countries need to become obsessive about asking themselves "What do we do
next?" Germany hasn't followed up on its World Cup success, so people are starting to revert to their
previous beliefs about the country. This always happens and it can only be prevented by projecting a
constant, unbroken stream of dramatic evidence that the country deserves the reputation it desires.
Even in countries where Germany did not previously enjoy a great reputation, the country's image
was massively enhanced after what has gone down in the history books as "Germany's summer
fairytale". Does this mean that some elements of the "brand essence" are in fact very volatile, in
other words, nice weather, high spirits, exciting matches is all it takes to change an image? Is it
really that simple?
No, they really aren't volatile at all: quite the contrary. National image is more like a fixed asset than

make this sustainable. One must distinguish

Singapore (CoSS) in 2001 stated that sports in Singapore ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Aside from the Singapore Sports School, schools in Singapore have received funding to step up
sports enrichment programs and sports are no longer confined to being co–curriculum activities or
physical education sessions in the school time table. In some schools, Physical Education has been
introduced as an examinable 'O' level subject. Students are taught to evaluate, plan and perform
various sports, including understanding the advantages and disadvantages of different training
strategies and techniques.
Beyond secondary school education, tertiary institutes also offer sports management and sports
science programs. For example, the Singapore Sports School has tied up with International
Baccalaureate and Republic Polytechnic to offer through–train diploma programs whilst Nanyang
Polytechnic offers the Diploma in Sports & Wellness Management and a degree in Sports
Science Management is offered by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
More recently, NTU has announced the setting up of a sports research facility named the Institute
for Sports Research (ISR). It is a collaboration project between the school, the Economic
Development Board (EDB) and England's Loughborough University. Many companies have already
expressed interest in the project as it promises to develop advanced sports related innovations and
technology.

most iconic product, Tiger Beer, is notably one of Singapore's most successful brands in the world
and is valued at S$820 million.
The lucrative beer industry has attracted numerous foreign beers to vie for the market share in
Singapore which is valued at S$562.7 million. As the beer industry in Singapore is reaching
maturity, beer companies have to find innovative means to remain competitive to have a profitable
share of the market.

(Asia Pacific Breweries Limited, Corporate Profile)
2.5 Market Trends
2011 proved to be a good year for beer, with a 7% total growth volume, amounting to 108 million
litres. The demand for beer products continue to grow steadily with the escalating trend of social
drinking in Singapore. Previously restricted to venues such as clubs and bars, beer products are
increasingly being consumed at local coffee shops or hawker centres or being purchased off the
shelf. (EuroMonitor International 2011, Beer in Singapore)
2.6 Market Prospect
Beer is expected to post a total volume CAGR of 4% to reach 130 million litres in 2016. As the
social drinking scene in Singapore consistently expands, beer will be able to expect a steady growth.
However, in years to come, Singapore's domestic beer industry will experience a slowdown as beer
in Singapore is reaching maturity. (EuroMonitor International 2011, Beer in Singapore)
2.7 Competitors
In 2011, local company Asia Pacific Breweries dominated the competition with a 64% volume
share. This was due to the overwhelming popularity of its brand, Tiger, which had a 35% volume
share. Tiger Beer faces strong competition, but can vie for higher market share through product
differentiation. Other rivalry brands were Heineken and Carlsberg. The intensity of rivalry helps
decide the extent of the value of brands and products in which will create head–to–head
competition. It also

Openness And Foreign Direct Investment
Openness to foreign direct investment. According to The World Bank (n.d.), "Foreign direct
investment is a category of cross–border investment associated with a resident in one economy
having control or a significant degree of influence on the management of an enterprise that is
resident in another economy." In 2014, the flows of FDI into Qatar reached more than USD 1,040
million See Fig. 1 ("Qatar Foreign Investment," 2016). Qatar is exceptionally open to FDI, as its
objective is to become a world–class leader in terms of its business environment for foreign direct
investment. Over the past several years, this has become a reality by way of improvements made to
the country's infrastructure and the creation of favorable foreign investment ... Show more content

decision designed to attract a large number of foreign investors in future years to come.
FDI laws and regulations. Qatar's investment–stimulating policies are proceeding on a steady basis,
in an effort to protect Qatari–owned companies from significant competition. The chief legislation
governing foreign investment in Qatar is Investment Law No. 13/2000. This law permits foreign
investors to hold 49% of the capital while a Qatari partner holds at least 51%. However, Investment
Law No. 13/2000 provides leeway for 100% ownership with special government approval. This
leeway is limited to investments in certain sectors, including: "agriculture, industry, health,
education, tourism, development and exploitation of natural resources, energy, mining, sports and
entertainment services; and banking and finance" ("Investment Climate," 2015). Significantly, the
investment must contribute to the long–term development of Qatar's human resources and
technology.
In addition to the previously stated Investment Law No. 13/2000, another law which governs FDI is
Law No. 23/2006. This piece of legislature provides foreigners the right of land use over real estate,
in designated 'investment areas,' for the duration of 99 years and is renewable following government
approval ("Investment Climate," 2015). The law also

Singapore, as well as draw the picture of its marketing environment. I will include the information
about the location, climate, population, religion and culture, official spoken languages, state of
economy and level of technologies, political and legal systems, level of competition and potential
for economic growth. In the conclusion I will highlight advantages and disadvantages of the

2.4 Languages As I have already mentioned, Singapore has four official languages: English, Tamil,
Mandarin and Malay. It was so historically formed that the official language of Singapore is Malay
and the national anthem is also written in Malay language. English is the administration language of
Singapore and it is mainly British English, but also contain some American English influences.
English remains the first language medium in schools and colleges of the country, and is also the
most widespread language in the literature. All signs and official publications are written in English,
but there are also versions translated into other official languages. But the population doesn't speak
English, but so–called Singlish with Creole characteristics, Chinese dialects, and Indian and Malay
languages. 2.5 Culture To describe the culture of the country in the full extent, it is necessary to
investigate into its cuisine, media, performing arts, sports and recreation, as well as into its
architectural heritage. Singapore cuisine is the bright example of cultural diffusion and diversity of
the country, and Indian, Malay, Chinese and Tamil influences can be observed. Local people enjoy
eating mee poh, bak chor mee, sambal stringray, nasi lemak, satay and chilli crab. All kind of food is
usually served in hawker centers. Food of Singapore is very diverse and includes a lot of seafood

(NIKE) in Singapore which includes the PESTLE framework, Porter's Five Forces and strategic suggestions for the company. 1.1 Company Background Nike, Inc. is an American international ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With that being said, it exerts pressure to the company as customers will hold a certain degree of bargaining leverage as they can easily switch to other competitors so as to be able to gain more profits for themselves. As a result, Nike will have to lower their product price in order to retain and attract more customers. Hence, the high buyer power poses as a threat for the company. 3.3 Competitive Rivalry Intense competition from established and new sportswear manufacturers and accelerated changes in technology and consumer preferences in the industry for sportwear can potentially threaten Nike's share growth. Nike competes with a significant number of companies, including Adidas, Under Armour, V.F. Corp., Puma, among others. Vertical retailers that design and manufacture their own products such as Lululemon Athletica and Uniqlo also plays a part in the competition for Nike. However, Nike is currently ranked first as the world's most valuable sports brand and its largest competitor, is Adidas. Nike currently has a Market Cap of $65.87 billion while Adidas has only

After working in the health and fitness industry I began purchasing their products: I liked their aesthetics, quality, and the branding that one didn't have to be a sports athlete to participate in their brand. Additionally, I felt they represent women more in their items and have a campaign to fight breast cancer which is a cause close to me. Under Amour also has a line dedicated to the Wounded Warrior Project and another to helping children in underserved communities. Thus, their fashionable and quality products were how I became a customer and their social work has me appreciate them and these factors had me believe they would be interesting to examine ... The corporate tax rate has just decreased from 35% to 21% which is good news for UA but not as much as companies that do more business in the US and also for a company that has significantly less debt than the highly leveraged Under Armour has (The Economist, 2018). Social factors are quite important for the retail industry and in 2017 a large demographic for clothing sales, teens, spent less overall and claimed Under Armour a brand they did not wear and athleisure in general to not be preferred attire anymore (Reagan, 2017). Thus, Under Armour's demographics changed just in the last year with teenagers claiming to not be wearers of the brand, and also the trend of athleisure coming to an end. Technology is an external environmental factor that affects Under Armour, but not as much its competitors in the industry. When fitness bands were introduced the company also came out with their own line of bands that proved unsuccessful and were discontinued (Booton, 2017). Pros And Cons Of National Service NS is an acronym that stands for National Service and it is defined as "The system in some countries in which young people have to do military training for a period of time." [remember do citation. Taken from oxford dictionary online]. National Service in Singapore is compulsory for all able– bodied male citizens and permanent residents who have reached the age of 18 years. They are required to serve in the army for a period of two years. From 2014, cars manufactured in the UK must be equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) mechanism in order to control skidding. Singapore is both a city and a nation–state. This complicates matters. Most foreigners think of Singapore simply as a city. But most Singaporeans think of Singapore in national terms. This, by default, has had the unintended side effect of causing some fissures in the national fabric. It is possible to be both a global city and a nation–state. But it could be argued that the global city project pursued by Singapore has come at a heavy price for the nation–building project. As a first step on this, the government had called for a Request for Concepts (RFC). This is a process whereby interested bidders would present concept proposals for the IR. There is no compulsion for the government to agree to whatever said RFC. If the government feels that the IR concept is not feasible or positive, the government had all the rights to say No. The result of RFC was a success. Many of the bidders were leading companies in the industry which had built high quality IRs elsewhere, and had solid track records and international reputations to protect. This helped Ministers to understand the concept of IR better. The economic point of view for IR establishment not only viable in Singapore but there was a major market opportunity waiting to be tapped. Interestingly, the introduction of the amusement parks in Singapore got influenced from China in the early days when amusement parks were originated from Shanghai (Chan and Yung, 2005). This demonstrates the connection between the Chinese Singaporeans and the Chinese community from Mainland China. In addition, it is mesmerizing to scrutinize how the introduction of the amusement parks were well–accepted by the local community, through transformation and localization of the parks for the multi–cultural Singaporeans. Gay World Amusement Park Gay World Amusement Park was opened in 1937 by George Lee on a plot of land between Geylang and Mountbatten Roads (Thimbuktu, 2011). Front and center at the event was the official program launch of the Boeing 777X, a massive new hit thanks to Emirates' record order of 150 new planes. Valued at $76 billion at list prices, this was the largest airplane deal ever inked. Aviation in the Middle East The 1980s aviation market in the Middle East was dominated by Gulf Air, a regional carrier backed by the states of Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the emirate of Abu Dhabi. While several European carriers serviced the region, the overall market was small and Gulf Air maintained a high market share. The majority of its flights emanated from its four hub cities to points in the Middle East, South Asia, and Europe, primarily on a point–to–point network. As a non–core city for Gulf Air, Dubai experienced reductions in air service in 1985 that compelled Dubai's leaders to launch its own airline. Local airline expertise was minimal, so the royal family commissioned a small team of expatriate airline veterans, helmed by Sir Maurice Flanagan, to charter the service they named Emirates. Divisional Senior Vice President (SVP) of Corporate Communications, Marketing & Brand Boutros Boutros remarked, "Locals or expats, management all had the same outlook and shared mentality, which ultimately helped build a successful and cohesive executive team."6 Armed with only two planes and $10 million in seed capital provided by the Government of Dubai, the airline initially developed a regional focus to connect underserved markets. These campus hubs are partnerships between several international branch institutions and share facilities and services such as student residences, food services, libraries, and medical facilities. Institutions participating in a hub can also benefit from joint branding and recruiting efforts. The level of cooperating inside each hub will vary; this model may necessitate compromise regarding an institution's standards and expectations (Stanfield 2013). Germany hasn't followed up on its World Cup success, so people are starting to revert to their previous beliefs about the country. This always happens and it can only be prevented by projecting a constant, unbroken stream of dramatic evidence that the country deserves the reputation it desires. Even in countries where Germany did not previously enjoy a great reputation, the country's image was massively enhanced after what has gone down in the history books as "Germany's summer fairytale". Does this mean that some elements of the "brand essence" are in fact very volatile, in other words, nice weather, high spirits, exciting matches is all it takes to change an image? Is it really that simple? No, they really aren't volatile at all: quite the contrary. National image is more like a fixed asset than a liquid capital, and normally can't be changed at all.
