The document summarizes the biblical story of David and Goliath. It tells of how the Philistines and Israelites prepared to go to war, with the giant Goliath challenging the Israelites to send out a warrior to fight him each day. David, a young shepherd, volunteered to fight Goliath when the Israelite warriors were too afraid. Despite being given King Saul's armor, David instead used his slingshot and stones to defeat the giant. He hit Goliath in the forehead with a stone from his slingshot, causing Goliath to fall, after which David killed him by cutting off his head with Goliath's own sword.
2. Many years ago, the
Philistines and the
Israelites were going
to fight each other in a
war. The Israelites
were God's chosen
people, and the
Philistines did not
believe in God. But
they had a secret
weapon--his name was
Goliath.
3. Goliath was the
champion of the
Philistines. He was a
man who was 9 feet
tall! Every morning for
forty days, the mighty
Goliath challenged the
Israelites for someone
to come out and fight
him, but none would go
out.
4. David was the eighth
and youngest son of
Jesse, from
Bethlehem. He was a
strong, healthy boy.
He was a Shepherd.
He was brave and
strong. He would
fight the wild animals,
even lions and bears,
that preyed upon on
his flock.
5. One day, David’s father
Jesse, asked him to
take corn and ten loaves
of bread to his brothers
who were in the battle of
the Israelites against
the Philistines.
David went off to the
Israelite camp.
6. When he reached the
camp, David saw how
all the Israelite
warriors were afraid of
Goliath! They all fled
when they saw him.
David asked, “What
shall be done for the
man who kills this
Philistine?”
9. “Why did you come here?” Eliab
asked. Abinadab and Shammah
were angry too. “We know your
pride and your naughtiness.”
10. When King Saul heard about David,
he called for him. David explained
that he had been fighting fierce
animals all his life.
11. David continued, "The LORD that saved and
delivered me out of the claws of the lion and
out of the claws of the bear will deliver me
out of the hand of this Philistine named
Goliath.”
12. Saul was convinced. He said, "Go, and the
LORD be with thee." So King Saul put his
own personal armor on David, and put a
brass helmet on his head and gave David
his sword.
13. But David decided not to wear any of it. He
said, "I cannot fight with these things. I've
never used them before." So David took it
all off.
14. Then he took his staff and chose five
smooth stones out of the brook and put
them in his shepherd's bag. He also had his
slingshot in his hand.
15. So David with his slingshot and his 5
stones walked up to Goliath.
Goliath was dismayed that his
opponent was such a young person!
He looked at David's staff
and slingshot and said,
"Am I a dog that you come to
beat me
with sticks?"
16. Goliath began to curse David by his
pagan gods. "Come here and I will
give your flesh to the birds and
other animals," Goliath roared.
17. But David was bold in the Lord!
He said to Goliath, “You come
to me with a sword, and with a
spear, and with a shield:
but I come to you in the name
of the LORD of hosts, the God of
the armies of Israel,
whom you have defied.
18. “This day the LORD will deliver
you into my hand that all the earth
may know that there is a God in
Israel,” David called out to
Goliath.
“And all this assembly
shall know that the LORD
saves not with sword and
spear: for the battle is the
LORD's, and he will give
you into our hands.”
19. He hit Goliath right
in his forehead and
the stone sunk into
Goliath’s head.
Goliath fell on his
face. David killed
that mighty
warrior with a
sling shot!
20. Then David ran,
stood on top of
Goliath and took
his sword out of
it's sheath and cut
off Goliath's head.
21. So of course all
the warriors
rejoiced and took
the treasures of
the Philistines.
22. Do you know that
David’s God is your
God too? Each and
every day you can
call on Him to help
you with what you
have to do!
23. When you think you
cannot do something,
you think you are too
weak or too small,
remember David!
He only had a
slingshot and some
stones but he was
able to beat the
mightiest warrior!
If we have faith in our
God, He can make
what we have in our
hands a powerful
tool!
24. David trusted God to
help him even though
the giant was much
larger than he was.
Do you have any
"giants" in your life?
Is there something so
big that you don't see
a way to overcome it?
Ask God for help in
meeting this enemy.
Go to your parent,
teacher, or a trusted
adult for their wise
counsel. Don't try to
solve the problem by
yourself.
