A lesson Google by Paula Young Especially for Kids -More Ways to Search for Information before beside or beyond
Contents – you can click on each section or all the way through ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],click click click
Google vs. KidsClick! ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Advantages of searching with KidsClick! ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Take a look at KidsClick! Type kidsclick.org (NOT .com) Search by alphabetic subject here (like c for cars or cats ) Search by Topic and Subtopic here Search by typing your words here
If I type cars I get this result: See the Reading Level for each site? Grades 0-2, 3-6, 7+ But that’s just a guide, not a rule. Search Results: 12 Now, why is this better than Google?
Advantages of searching with KidsClick! ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
But, only part of the internet can be found with search engines. Some of it is hidden. It may be called the Invisible Web or Deep Web . In this part you can find many articles, documents, and pictures that have been published in magazines, newspapers and other sources but are only available by paying a fee or subscription. How do you get to this part of the internet? You must use a database . What is that and how do you find it? A database is a collection of data (information). Your school library and public library have paid the fee for databases so that you can use them just by logging in. Go online to your school library page. It will look like this -- How do I get to the school library page?
How to get to the school library page: From school: Login Go to the Internet (it will give you the Cy-Fair Homepage) On the Cy-Fair Homepage, click on Departments click on Libraries click on Elementary click on your school name -- There you are! OR -- Your teacher or librarian may have another way for you to get there! From home or any place with internet: Go to the internet go to www.cfisd.net (then same as above) Departments – Libraries – Elementary – your school *Tell your friends and family – it works for Middle School and High School, too!
There are two tabs: Home and Catalog The Home tab has many links, but the one we are looking for is EBSCO . Home tab Click on EBSCO: a database collection. At the login screen, enter the User ID and Password given by your librarian or teacher.
Click either Searchasaurus or Kids Search Elementary School
They both have a Dictionary and Encyclopedia . You can search for pictures / images as a separate group. You can search for articles (not websites) by topic browsing or search terms in the box. for youngest students – or anybody! for elementary students – or anybody!
Notice the helps in Detailed Search Select the type of document you want OR chose them all. Always click Full Text so you don’t get just a summary (abstract) of an article. This helps you focus your search for better results.
Some things to notice about your search results : You can filter or narrow your search in several ways. Most items have a Reading Level (Lexile). What are HTML and PDF ? Which do I pick? HTML is usually plain text only without illustrations. PDF is an exact copy of the original, like a photo, and it has all the pictures or drawings.
HTML Full Text – a plain typed version of just the text. It loads quickly and doesn’t waste space. PDF Full Text – looks just like the original magazine with color, graphics, and photos. It may take longer to load and may be hard to read. Zoom in or out to see what you want. Here is one article shown both ways for you to see the difference: “ The Best Cars You’ve Never Heard Of”
Another great source of information: Your School Library Catalog Library Search . This is where you go to look for books in the library. If you haven’t tried all of these tabs yet, try them soon! WebPath Express is a way to search for websites and books in your library at the same time! Wow! Take a look!
WebPath Express -3 ways to search Search – enter your words or check out some featured items Browse by subject list Visual Search Now let’s look at the results-
A search for sharks – through the Browse choice This is a list of Web Sites about my topic. I could narrow my list by grade level or just look at all and notice the grade level tag . It’s also annotated (a little summary). By clicking on the Titles tab I can now see a list of the books that my library has about this topic, without doing another search.
