The idea is to think differently about
the way you work.
Work offshore doesn’t have to be tough,
heavy and strenuous.
And you don’t have to be soft to work
differently!

Change the load, or
change the work area.
Improve the technique used to handle it.

How can you change the load?
• Reduce the size of the load (split it, or
see if it’s available in smaller quantities)
• Make it easier to grip - handles, hooks,
straps
• Stabilise it - stop sudden movements
• Cover any sharp edges, greasy surfaces
(so it’s easy to hold close to you)

• Take your time.
• Work with your team.
• Take breaks.
• Report any problems.
These are the most common cause of
injury - about 1 in 3.
And yet they are mostly avoidable! They
tend to happen when you rush or cut
corners.
E.g. not keeping
one hand on the
rails.

Slips, trips & falls
We are often unaware
that massive forces
can act on our body as
we slip, trip or fall.
The effect is made
worse by the sudden
shock of it.
What are some of the causes?
• Steps, ramps, ridges.
• Differences in sizes
of steps.
• Loose floor surfaces.
• Wet, greasy, polished
floors.
• Poor lighting.

Poor working posture
The more your back
is bent over, the
greater the strain
on the discs,
muscles, etc. 
And the longer it
goes on, the more
likely your back is to
be injured.
A ‘poor working posture’ is when any part of
your body is not held in its resting position:
• Arms held away from the
body - raised up, forward, to
the side.
• Bending the neck - forward,
back, sideways.
• Bending the back - usually
forward.
• Standing with legs in
awkward positions.

So what can you do?
When you pick your
bag up ...
... how good is your
back posture?
If these extreme postures can be designed
out, the risk of pain or injury is reduced.
First - admit you may not always have the
perfect posture ...

So, think about your job ...
• The better your posture (of your back,
arms, neck) - the longer you can remain
pain-free.
• Where possible work in the most relaxed,
comfortable posture.
• Think of ways it could be improved e.g.
better layout, putting up scaffolding,
using different tools/equipment.

position to work in - because the
problem is how the plant is set out.

often.
• Don’t forget about maintenance and

Q. Is it better to use manual effort or a
powered tool?
A. It depends!
A powered tool will do the job quickly, with
less effort & take the strain off you.
But…
…it may be heavier to hold, cause vibration,
make excessive noise, be larger and awkward
to use.
You must decide which is more appropriate.

  1. For the tutor ...The intention of these notes is to offer some information that can be used by the tutor when giving this presentation. They will give the tutor some anecdotal information about the photographs and illustrations used. The notes will equip them with background details to help talk around the slides. The tutor is not expected to have any prior knowledge or practical experience either of ergonomics or giving presentations. It should be possible for the tutor to familiarise themselves with the slide presentation and these notes. They can then add their own examples from their personal experience and make the presentation relevant to the group they are talking to. PowerPoint is a straightforward method of presentation. The tutor can control the speed and timing of the slides and can organise them to suit the group. The work ‘Next’ appears in the corner of each slide when all information is on view. It is then at the control of the tutor to move on to the next slide, or to pause for discussion. For the user ... The presentation is designed to flow at a reasonable speed to allow the user to read and take in the information. The text and photographs/pictures arrive in short sections, such as individual bullet points. When all the detail is complete on a slide, the word ‘Next’ pops up in the corner. The user presses the ‘Return’ key on the keyboard when they are ready to move onto the next slide.
  2. Symptoms of aches and pains are warning signs that something has been damaged. They should not be ignored. An awkward posture may result in sore muscles.
  3. A particular action may cause discomfort at the time.
  4. It may be when you take a shortcut or rush a job that you hurt yourself.
  5. If you do feel pain, you should report it. Better still, prevent it happening in the first place.
  6. Don’t just accept tradition as the only way to work. Ask how other installations work, look at catalogues for ideas, stand back and look at your own job, the tools, and the work area.
  7. Safe manual handling is not just about using a good technique.
  8. Obviously, wherever possible you should use good technique: use leg muscles not back muscles, hold the load close to you, get a firm grip, etc.
  9. There are other factors offshore: stairs, narrow walkways, ladders, tight spaces, etc. If carrying up/down stairs, this will be one-handed, as one hand must be on the rail.
  10. Where possible, risky handling should be avoided. If this can’t be done, the risk should be reduced.
  11. You can look at what is being handled e.g. instead of carrying 25 kg sacks of chemicals, order them in smaller quantities. Fix straps or handles to awkward loads to help carry them. If tools, equipment, etc. are loose in boxes, pack them in with padding to stop them shifting. The closer you hold something to you, the less effort required and less chance of injury.
  12. If the work area is dark you may not see obstructions which you could trip over, bump into, etc. Practice good housekeeping and work tidy. If you are carrying something, it may be harder to see your feet, so you could trip easily. If you are cold or working in the rain you may increase your chance of pulling a muscle, so keep as warm and dry as possible.
  13. There is no point putting yourself at risk, being macho or taking shortcuts in safety. Wearing gloves can improve your grip. Don’t carry too much, or strain to lift something heavy, or stuck.
  14. Team handling requires a bit of practice, and clear communication. When do you lift if you hear “1, 2, 3 ... Lift”. Was it on ‘3’, on or after the word ‘lift’? Try “Ready, Steady, Lift”. Breaks are necessary to let your muscles recover, or to warm up, top up energy levels, rehydrate. Tell your Supervisor if you have any problems, e.g. faulty equipment, conflicts between people, suggestions to do the job differently.
  15. It is the policy on most installations both inside and outside for people to keep one hand on the rail at all times. This is often ignored. On installations where there is no lift it can be difficult to carry things up and down the stairs whilst keeping one hand on the rail.
  16. Because slips, trips and falls are sudden and unexpected it can cause the person to tense up their muscles and this can increase the risk of injury.
  17. The massive forces and the shock of the incident can result in damage to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc. and these effects may not be isolated to just one part of the body. The shock can actually affect the person as a whole.
  18. The top photograph is taken in the galley of an installation where there is a small step and door lip going into the stores area. Items are carried in and out of stores such as 25 kg bags of flour and potatoes. It may not be easy for the person to see their feet when they are carrying such large items so the chance of them slipping or tripping is increased. The photograph at the bottom is in a workshop where these boards are found in front of pieces of machinery. It was not known why the boards were necessary and they did seem to cause more of a problem of tripping than actually being of any help. Wet and greasy floors are a common hazard on installations. Problems can arise where there are a number of such causes of slips, trips and falls and in addition where people are rushing or not holding onto hand rails.
  19. Don’t always assume that someone else will take action or has even seen the hazard that you have noticed. If you notice pipework sticking out that someone could trip on or bump into, report it yourself and wrap reflective or coloured tape around. Don’t create trip hazards by leaving your tool box lying around or by not tidying up when you go for tea breaks. If you see wet floors whether inside from spilt coffee or outside from grease or oil, mop it up or cover up with something suitable.
  20. The photograph on the left shows a ramp that has been constructed to cover up a ridge on the floor. This means that a trolley can be wheeled over it easily. On the right a potential bang on the head is reduced by wrapping coloured tape around the pole.
  21. It is clear that the more awkward the posture you hold when you are working the greater the chance of aches and pains towards the end of the day. In practice it is not this simple because the offshore environment is often limited in space and people often end up working in confined spaces.
  22. If you look at how other people work in different areas of the installation it will give you an idea of how you probably work as well. It is impossible to see your own posture but it is likely to be similar to that of your colleagues.
  23. A poor back posture is not uncommon. Nearly everything we do requires us to bend our backs whether standing up and leaning forward for example, brushing our teeth, serving out food in the restaurant, picking up tools, sitting down at coffee time and relaxing in the evening, again sitting down watching TV. This diagram shows that the more the spine is bent over whether sitting or standing the more pressure there is on the back itself. The wear and tear damage to the back is made worse when we put extra strain on our backs.
  24. It is not just the back that we are looking at here. It is also important to look at the arms, the neck and the legs. The resting position for the body is when the arms, legs, head and back are in their neutral or starting position. Anything we do that takes us away from this resting position requires effort and so the longer these postures are held the greater the chance of discomfort or injury.
  25. Awareness of your own posture is important here. You need to try and avoid extreme awkward postures wherever possible.
  26. This is a classic example of an awkward posture. It makes sense to help one another rather than struggle alone. People have been known to injury themselves just struggling with their zip.
  27. It is often the nature of the work area that forces you to work in an awkward posture. On the left the man is putting baggage into the hold of the helicopter. By putting one knee on the steps into the hold he is able to take some of the strain off his back but you can still see that his back is bent over and twisted. The risk of him injuring himself would be higher if the bags were heavy as well. On the right the man is operating a valve wheel in the production area. It is quite low for him which causes him to bend over. These wheels can be difficult to move and could go suddenly if significant force is applied.
  28. There is no reason for this man to bend his back an keep his legs straight when picking up these bags of chemicals in the mixing area. The risk of him injuring his back is reduced by him bending his knees and lifting the bag with it held close to him.
  29. Try to look at your job with a fresh pair of eyes paying attention to how your colleagues work. Look at the position of their back, their arms, their head and their legs and see if they could be better. If it is not possible to work in a good posture then it is important to change your posture regularly. For example, if your job is at floor level and your back is bent over to do the job then when you stop for coffee do not then sit down with your back bent again as this will not take the strain off your back.
  30. Space is often limited on an installation and the plant is frequently modified usually with items being added rather than removed. This can result in difficulty seeing and reaching nuts and bolts, valves, etc. In the photograph on the left the person is straining to reach up for a valve wheel mechanism which is clearly out of reach. The valve wheel and their displays are clearly positioned too high to be easily seen and operated.
  31. When you are next in a control room for example if you need to organise a work permit, have a look at the posture of the operators. Look at how they sit or stand when looking at the screens, using the keyboards, using the intercom, etc. Consider if their posture is dictated by the layout of their work area or not.
  32. The most effective way to make sure plant and equipment is easy to access is to design it in this way in the beginning. Consideration should be given to the person and the nature of the job they are doing. It is possible to change or adapt the equipment, the tools and the nature of the job.
  33. Here is an example of areas of the plant that are very difficult to reach. The controls are impossible to reach without crawling under the pipework. The second photograph shows a control panel that is easily accessible and where the controls and their displays are close to one another.
  34. These photographs were taken in the laundry area of an installation. On the left the controls for the dryers are positioned at the very top of the machine which makes it difficult for the steward to reach them easily. The trolley on the other hand has a very low base which requires the steward to bend over and reach with arms outstretched for laundry items at the bottom of the trolley.
  35. Access to the turbines in this area was difficult without steps. However the gap between the top step and the scaffold platform is too great for anyone to manage safely.
  36. These photographs were taken on the wire line deck where the down hole tools and other equipment are stored. You can see from the postures that storage is not ideal as they are having to stretch and reach awkwardly. Access to such pieces of equipment should be made easy particularly for heavier items and those used more frequently.
  37. This next section is looking at equipment and hand tools.
  38. Consider the tools used by yourself and your colleagues both manual and pneumatic. Ask if anyone has had any injuries or problems with any of the equipment or hand tools that they use. Make a list of the different tools that people use and some of the problems that they experience using them.
  39. This list identifies the main ergonomics issues found in the drilling area.
  40. In the chemical mixing area the handling can be strenuous and repetitive. According to the Manual Handling Regulations a sack of this weight would be better placed near the man’s waist and not on the floor. Note his posture as the stack gets lower on the right-hand side.
  41. The working height of these two different hoppers also has an affect on how the handling of the sacks is done. If the working height is too high then the load has to be lifted higher which puts greater strain on the back and upper arm muscles.
  42. This photograph clearly shows how high the bag has to be lifted in order to be emptied into the hopper.
  43. Ask if anyone in the group has any comments on the suggestions or any other ideas of ways to reduce or avoid the manual handling in this instance.
  44. Handling a drum whether between two people or by one person is potentially risky for the handler. The best way to avoid the handling is to use a pneumatic pump to empty the contents of the drum without moving it from its storage position.
  45. On the drill floor there may be a number of tasks that are carried out by hand. For example, handling the slips. Because of their position it is not easy to work in a good posture.
  46. There are mechanical solutions to these handling problems and these should be used wherever possible.
  47. Pig handling is carried out in a number of different ways on different platforms. It should be possible to reduce the physical effort required to handle the pigs whether they are lifted or slid along.
  48. Avoid or remove anything that may cause a slip, trip or fall and make people aware of any hazards.
  49. This photograph shows a close up of the area directly in front of a hopper in the chemical mixing area. The pallet was brought closer to the hopper with the intention of making handling easier. Instead this created a trip hazard and meant that there was less space for the person to do the handling safely.
  50. Handling the sacks in the chemical mixing area again. Here is an example of a typically bad handling posture where the legs are straight and the back is bent. Training the person in the correct technique may not be the most effective solution. Instead if the height of the pallet were raised then there would not be the need for the person to bend.
  51. Because there are obstructions around the top of the hopper it is difficult for this person to work in a more relaxed posture. Obstructions should be removed to prevent this from happening.
  52. In this control room by the drill floor the operator is doing two tasks at once - watching the drill floor and answering the phone. Look at the different pieces of equipment and see if any could be positioned for easier access.
  53. As identified earlier, handling drums is an awkward task. It is best avoided by leaving the drum in its upright position and using a pneumatic pump to empty it instead.
  54. Always try to improve the layout so that the person is encouraged to work in a good posture. Once the layout has been improved then it is easier to encourage good manual handling practice.
  55. The result of a poor layout of a control panel is that the operator has to work in awkward postures.
  56. The controls in this drill shack are positioned on the opposite side to the window looking out onto the drill floor. It is important that the operator is looking through the window whilst operating these controls. He therefore has to twist through 180º.
  57. It is helpful if the operator can see quickly and easily what the displays are showing. It may be helpful to attach labels or markers to the displays to indicate either a normal level or the point at which action needs to be taken.
  58. Lighting is another way to improve the clarity of the displays.
  59. The larger the window looking onto the drill floor the better so that the operator can see what is happening easily.
  60. The window should be maintained and replaced as necessary.
  61. Personal Protective Equipment is essential to prevent injuries and long-term damage. The PPE may actually improve performance for example gloves with a good grip then do not require as much force to grip.
  62. New area: control room.
  63. Ask the group these two questions before looking at the next slide. Prompt them by asking about the position of the computers and the mice in relation to their position on the console.
  64. You can see that the operator is leaning forward with his back bent, his right arm is outstretched with his wrist bent back. His head is raised up to look at the screen. This could all be improved by encouraging the operators to sit closer to the console and by bringing the mice and keyboards towards the edge of the console so that he does not have to reach forward. It would be helpful if the monitors were positioned at the same height as one another so that the operator could look between them easily.
  65. Whether standing or sitting this intercom is difficult to use without bending the head or the neck forward to use it. The intercom is a vital part of the operators work and is used on a regular basis. Therefore it would be helpful if it could be extended or positioned in a more accessible place.
  66. Just sitting down already places extra strain on the back particularly on the muscles and the discs. Leaning forward increases this pressure. The answer to this is for the operator to stand up and change his posture on a regular basis. If you look closely at the chair arms in this photograph you will see that they are being damaged because they clash with the front of the console when the operator tries to sit closer. When considering chairs for the control room, it is important to look at the chair arms and to make sure that the operator can sit close enough to the console.
  67. There are chairs available that are designed for operators in control rooms. The chairs should be comfortable for the individual.
  68. A break does not necessarily mean not working. A break should be a change in posture so that the body has a chance to recover and therefore help to reduce discomfort and the risk of injury.
  69. The operator should be able to work in a comfortable posture whilst monitoring and responding to information about the running of the installation. Things that prevent easy access include badly positioned display screens and keyboards and seating that prevents the person from sitting close enough to the console. Also panels that are positioned too high to comfortably see or reach may be a problem.
  70. The equipment itself needs to be as user friendly as possible. This photograph shows a good example where the display screens and keyboards have been colour-coded in a consistent way so that the information can be looked at and responded to in an efficient way. Other ways to make controls and displays more user friendly is to consider where they are positioned and to involve the different senses i.e. sound, sight and touch.
  71. Where there is a large amount of information it is more difficult for the operator to focus on what is important. It is important to use labeling and to consider using different tones on the telephones to help the operator to know which one to answer.
  72. New area: helideck.
  73. There is a considerable amount of manual handling carried out on the helideck to and from the helicopters. The trolley in this photograph was designed to carry the bags and other luggage from the hold to and from the helicopter to take the repetitive handling away from the crew. It may be helpful to provide two trolleys one for incoming crew and one for outgoing crew to reduce the handling further. If there is knotted rope on the helideck then it may be difficult to use a trolley. It would be helpful to remove the knotted rope in this case.
  74. Safe manual handling practice is important when handling the baggage to and from the helicopter and in and out of the hold. Consider other ways to reduce the manual handling and risk of injury here.
  75. Consider how the fuel hose is handled on your installation. How many people perform the task and is any other equipment used to make this task easier? Are there any other ways to make this task less strenuous?
  76. A common cause of slips, trips and falls is the knotted rope on the surface of the helideck. It has been shown that the knotted rope is not essential for the safety of the helicopter. A good non-slip surface on the helideck is satisfactory and recommended.
  77. New area: crane cab.
  78. Much of the work of the crane cab operator is carried out from a seated position sometime for long periods. For example, when unloading from a ship the operator tends to lean forward looking down for several hours at a time. This puts strain on the back and increases the risk of injury.
  79. Where a poor posture cannot be avoided then the advice is to change the posture regularly to allow the body to recover.
  80. The seat in the crane cab should be adjusted for the comfort of the person using it. It may be possible to alter the angle of the backrest and the height of the seat. The more support the chair can offer the less strain there is on the muscles of the person.
  81. Look at the photograph at the bottom on the left and look at the position of the microphone. In order to use this microphone and to be heard clearly the operator has to lean to one side and bend his head forward. This is an awkward posture and increases his risk of injury by doing so on a regular basis. It would be helpful if the microphone could be positioned closer to the operator to prevent this awkward posture.
  82. New area: scaffolding.
  83. Ways to reduce manual handling for the scaffolders is to provide storage for the scaffolding equipment in as many places as is necessary to cut down the amount carried by hand. The larger pieces of equipment should be transported by crane.
  84. A larger trolley or a smaller wheelbarrow may be useful to carry the smaller pieces of equipment or tools between areas.
  85. Safe manual handling practice is important to reduce the chance of injury. The person should decide for themselves how much they are comfortable carrying and not overload themselves. It is usually necessary to keep one hand free but the person should be careful not to be in a twisted posture when carrying items.
  86. The heavier pieces of equipment should be stored around waist height to reduce the risk of injury when handling the equipment. Compare the back postures of these two scaffolders: the person at the top is bent to one side and his spine is twisted slightly. The scaffolder below has a good upright posture with no twisting.
  87. To take the weight off your back it is helpful to slide the planks rather than hold them unsupported. The risk of injury is greater when the load is further away from the person’s body.
  88. Look at the different postures here and consider whether the awkward postures are unavoidable or not.
  89. It may not always be easy to work in a comfortable posture because of the limited space in the work area.
  90. There are ways to reduce the strain on your muscles and it is important to change your posture regularly to reduce the chance of injury.
  91. The scaffold spanner is the piece of equipment used most by scaffolders. They often complain of pain in their wrists and in their arms as a result of repetitive use of this tool. The chance of injury is reduced if the person can work with their hand, wrist and arm in a good posture requiring as little effort as possible.
  92. Three suggestions to reduce the amount of effort required that may also reduce the risk of injury.
  93. Whilst putting up the scaffolding to improve access to a particular area of the plant it is important to use the lanyards.
  94. Scaffolders need to wear gloves that not only protect them from sharp edges from the cold, etc., but the gloves should also improve their grip and therefore require less effort to grip. The safety hat should fit snuggly and not impair their visibility. All other PPE should fit well and be in a good state of repair and replaced as necessary.
  95. New area: paint spraying.
  96. It may be unavoidable to work in an awkward posture because of the nature of this work.
  97. If the awkward postures are inevitable then the best way to reduce the chance of injury is to change your posture regularly and allow the body to recover.
  98. Whenever possible stand upright and give your back a rest from being bent over. Here is an example of a task that does not need to be done in such a bad posture. If the paint pot were put on a slightly higher surface then the paint sprayer would be able to stand upright and not put strain on his back.
  99. It is important that the paint sprayer wears all the necessary PPE and that it fits well.
  100. This type of work is repetitive and requires using the same equipment all the time. Its important that the person takes steps to reduce the chance of strain and injury to themselves e.g. find ways to hold and use the spray gun with less effort.
  101. Ways to reduce the onset of discomfort and reduce the risk of injury are to move about regularly and to change the posture. The paint sprayer should try to organise the work so that it can be done in manageable chunks.
  102. New area: abseil work
  103. Manual handling is part of the work of the abseiler but the safe handling techniques can not all be practiced for obvious reasons. However there are ways to reduce the strain on the individual.
  104. The safety equipment should be in a good state of repair and replaced or repaired as necessary. Find out whether alternative equipment may be more comfortable or easier to use. Gloves are necessary for protection but should also help to improve grip and therefore require less effort on the part of the individual when gripping.
  105. It is up to the individual to find ways to work in the best posture and to take the strain off their muscles whatever they are doing.
  106. New area: wire line deck
  107. Much of the equipment and the tools in the wire line area are large and heavy. It is important not to cause an injury by handling something unnecessarily. Use mechanical assistance where possible and if the load must be moved by hand, practice safe handling techniques and get help where necessary.
  108. Safe handling techniques include bending the legs rather than the back; holding the load close to you and moving it in a slow controlled way. Think about the task before doing it and choose the best way to do it.
  109. You can avoid a lot of unnecessary handling by storing things at a suitable height. If items are stored around waist height they are much easier to handle. If space is limited then consider if it is being well used and whether anything is not needed and if necessary, request further storage space to be made available.
  110. Try to use space efficiently but think about the people and the type of work they are carrying out and make the area as user friendly as possible.
  111. In this example, the down hole tool is being dismantled using a Stenson initially. The working height is low for this person as you can see that he is leaning forward to carry out this work. This will put additional strain on his back and his neck. Ideally he should be standing more upright. The solution for this individual is to take regular mini-breaks and to stand upright to allow his back to recover.
  112. The tools are designed to make the job easier to do so if you are having problems with the tools or equipment then you should see what other options are available. Look through catalogues to see whether a different model may be easier to use. Equipment should be maintained following manufacturers instructions.
  113. Try to avoid working for long periods of time without a break.
  114. New area: offices
  115. Not many people sit upright when using the computer and it is not essential to do so all of the time. What is important is to change your posture regularly and not to sit in one fixed posture for long periods.
  116. The position of the desk, the chair, the computer and any other relevant equipment should enable the person using it to sit in a comfortable position.
  117. If the desk is not large enough then the person will not be able to sit comfortably in front of the computer and therefore may be at a greater risk of injury to themselves.
  118. The position of the computer is important to ensure a comfortable position for the user. The person should not have to twist either their body or their head to see the computer.
  119. The chair should suit the individual and the type of work that they are doing. The same chair may not suit everyone.
  120. If the computer is too low on the table then a monitor stand or the yellow pages as a temporary measure will help to raise the height of the monitor up for a more comfortable position for the user.
  121. This additional equipment should all be within easy reach and should suit the type of work that the person is doing.
  122. A laptop is not ideal for someone to use for the majority of their time. If this is the case then it is recommended that a separate keyboard and mouse are used and that the laptop is put on a stand or raised up so that the top of the display screen is about in-line with the persons eyes. If this is not done the person may work with their head and neck flexed forward and sitting in a hunched position which is not recommended.
  123. New area: galley
  124. The task of unloading deliveries and putting them into stores may be repetitive and prolonged but may also be under pressure of time, for example, if there are frozen or perishable food items.
  125. You need to try and find ways of reducing the manual handling for this task. This roller conveyor system packs away neatly and can be easily put up to unload a container. Alternatively, where items need to be moved from one level to another a chute or a slide may be constructed to reduce the manual handling.
  126. Avoid putting heavier items on the floor. This table with figures on has been produced by the HSE to offer handling guidelines to reduce the risk of injury to men and women. It is a fact that on average women have a third less muscle power than men and therefore should not be expected to handle the same weights as men. Where items are particularly heavy, consider whether they could be purchased in smaller, lighter quantities that are easier to handle.
  127. Some of these pieces of meat are particularly heavy and it would be better if they were not stored at the very top or bottom of this fridge. Consider who will be doing the handling and whether items are stored in suitable places or not.
  128. There is a risk of slips, trips and falls in the galley but there are a number of ways of avoiding them.
  129. Don’t always assume that people will see a small lip on a doorway as a potential trip hazard. In this galley area people are constantly going to the stores and when they are carrying items they may not be able to see their feet as easily. The risk of tripping is therefore high.
  130. Consider the tasks that people carry out in the galley area and see whether the layout of storage is appropriate for everyone. Try to avoid people working in awkward postures where the risk of injury is increased.
  131. The base of this sink is very deep and causes the person to lean over putting strain on his back. This is not a comfortable working position or a suitable working height but could be easily improved.
  132. This working height allows the chef to remain in an upright position with minimal strain on his back and to carry out his work more easily.
  133. The working height needs to be appropriate to what you are doing. If the task requires effort and physical force then the surface should be slightly lower so that you can apply body weight to the task you are doing. If however the task requires little effort but attention to detail, then the working height should be much higher. For all other tasks the working height should be around elbow height to the individual. One solution is to provide a number of different working heights in an area so that people can work at a height that suits them and the job they are doing.
  134. New area: cabins/laundry
  135. Here are two different styles of trolley used to carry bedding and clothing between the cabins and the laundry. The two trolleys both have a low base and therefore the person will have to bend over in an awkward position to take things out of the trolley. The benefit of the trolley on the right is that the castors are positioned in such a way that they move easily over the doorway. The trolley on the left is not as easy to push over the lip of the doorway.
  136. Here is an example of the posture that results from using a trolley that has a low base to it.
  137. The chemicals used in the laundry area may be heavy and depending on the size of the installation may need to be replaced on a regular basis. Consider ways to reduce the manual handling of these containers and avoid any unnecessary handling.
  138. Each installation may require the stewards to follow certain practices but it is important to consider what is best for the person and for their health. Ideally the person should be able to avoid excessive bending of their back which puts strain on the muscles and other soft tissues.
  139. Whenever possible, the steward should stand up to rest their back.
  140. Here is an example of a prop that was constructed to hold up the mattress to allow the steward to clean underneath it. It prevents the person having to hold the mattress up with one hand and clean with the other which puts considerable strain on their arm and their back.
  141. The washing machines on the left-hand photograph are positioned at a good height and allow the steward to load and unload them without any awkward postures. However, the position of the controls for the dryers are rather high for the individual and requires him to reach up with an outstretched arm. It is probably difficult to read the settings on these controls as well.
  142. Ensure there is sufficient space and that there is a good working height for the laundry to be dealt with. Avoid putting items on the floor which requires awkward bending.
