This is an early version of a presentation I'm preparing for business owners and executives.
Because of the audience this was intended for, the presentation features more on the benefits of open source CMS systems such as Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal.
Towards the end there is also a rant about Australia's Yellow Pages operator, Sensis and a quick look at some of the free online marketing tools.
Most of my background has been tech support Web sites have historically been something dropped in the lap of IT people, which has made it more complex than it needs be. Content Management Systems have taken off because of the explosion of data
Vendor lock in Forces businesses into upgrade paths Upgrades break things (what version Sharepoint are we up to) Our Access database: Did not have the time to update Forces hardware upgrades (Quinns) Licenses Complex costly Most businesses can’t comprehend the licensing labyrinth Some licenses prohibit more than 25 concurrent users, some prohibit web Fortunately neither can Microsoft Open Source reduces risk Buggy Proprietary software is released by commercial imperatives Window Vista was the classic; it should never have been released Open peer review actually makes the product more stable as bugs and poorly performing modules Microsoft and most other companies are very siloed and secretive even between company divisions Recently a former Microsoft senior manager wrote a scathing article about the politics that crippled various MS products because managers were protecting their own line. Data is not necessarily accessible 2Clix is the example

Originally a blogging application Believe 90% of businesses can run on Wordpress Massive number of templates (Screen shot of template web site) Easily installable (screen shot of paulwallbank configuration page) (screen shot of paulwallbank.com home page) Flexible (screen shot of itqueries.com home page Plugs ins (screen shot of mail chimp page) One of the great things is if you have cheap hosting, like Bluehost you can have a functional website running in 30 minutes. I’ll come back to hosting later. Huge support base. No shortage of WP supporters Simple languages, if you or a staff member can figure out basic HTML then PHP is a doddle Worpress doesn’t deal well with very high traffic sites with many users and features like user forums and photo galleries
Means come together in Swahili A wide range of support: popular with geeks Good templates (Screen shot of Joomla configuration page) Good for collaborative tools
Extremely robust: lots of traffic and users (Drupal configuration screen) Out of the box configurations. Very good for internal or techy sites Sexy stuff needs a big investment in developer costs
(screen shot of wp e-commerce plug ins) Many cost Options depends upon costs and clients needs Pay pal can be simple Plugins often charge, the free version is very limited and doesn’t meet most needs. Payin $40 to $100 overcomes the problems. Careful about security issues Really need an expert to set up and configure Scoping
Hosting Can do it internally, if sites are external facing then hosting is a better option (show picture of computer rack) Hosting: WebCentral and most Australian hosting companies are a lousy deal, expensive and arrogant Not very good security. A TPG data centre was flooded out in Melbourne last year because it’s in a basement: 101 stuff, these guys aren’t serious. Blue host (show screenshot of Simple Scripts page) configurable robust for small businesses Rackspace
Outsourcing Savings are not as great as they appear: cheap labour is less productive Serious project management costs and skill requirements Security and legals
Crowdsourcing Limited effective use for businesses Serious copyright risks Low quality for commercial projects Works for things people believe in Competition sites are not crowdsourcing Low cost, low quality Management time
Cloud computing systems Client Relationship System 37 Signals Zoho Salesforce Serious project management. You’ll need a specialist to deal with this
Consultants Scope the project with the client: What exactly do they want? Opportunity for Marketing Angels as PMs managing contractors and consultants Websites are increasingly part of the business process. Management must be fully engaged with the process; just passing it off as an IT or marketing function will cause problems Finding consultants Google is your friend Check reference sites Have a look at their comments on web sites Follow up references with active calls Few people part on good terms with web designers, this is because of scope problems particularly on the client side Project management is the real skill If a contract is slipping; get the contractor and client in the room Specify deliverables, timelines and payment schedules tied to project milestones
Marketing tools Google local business (screenshot of PC Rescue LBC) office junior can configure this in an hour. Link websites to it Add other content Add marketing collateral Good search results (PC Rescue search results) Do it yourself stuff very easy Sensis rant (show free Sensis registration page)
