WORDLE learn how to create
                  TUTORIAL
 To help teachers
     wordles for the classroom
What is Wordle?
Wordle is a free online tool that enables you to generate word clouds
When you enter a body of text, the tool generates a cloud that gives
greater prominence to words that appear more frequently within the text
you provide
   The greater the number of times a word appears within the text, the larger
   that word will appear in your cloud
The tools allows you to customize the layout, font and colors scheme of
your wordle clouds as well as save or print them out

Step 1:

Get Online

 Open a browser to the
 internet

 We recommend you use
 the Firefox Browser for
 best results
Step 2:

Go to Wordle.Net                address panel




 In the address panel of your
 internet browser type in:

 http://www.wordle.net
 Then click the ENTER key on
 your keyboard
Step 3:

Creating a Wordle Cloud
 There are two methods to
 create a wordle cloud

 Selecting the right method for
 you depends on your
 intended purpose

     Tip: Think about how you
     intend to use this tool in
     your lesson?

  PURPOSE:

  most frequently within a body
  of text

          Use METHOD 1
Uses of Method 1
As a lesson trigger
   Get students to view a wordle and identify the key words (by size)
   Students to link the key words and explain how they are connected
As a revision tool
   For the topic, chapter, subject
   Wordle can be printed and made into a large poster that is placed on
   the classroom wall

Step 6:

Using Method 1


 Click on ‘Create your own’   click here
Step 7:

Using Method 1
 Without closing the internet
 browser to wordle

 Select the body of text that you
 would like to create a wordle
 cloud out of

 Right click and select the copy
 option
Step 8:

Using Method 1
 Return to the internet
 browser that is open to
 wordle

 Point your mouse to the
 window where it says ‘Paste
 in a bunch of text’

 Right click and select the
 paste option
Step 9:

Using Method 1
 Click on the GO button

 Wait for between 10 - 20
 seconds                       click here


 The next thing you see will
 be your completed wordle
 cloud!
Step 10:

Using Method 2
  PURPOSE:

  To “engineer” a wordle cloud by
  allocating prominence to some
  words (through a simple
  formula) and not others


        Use METHOD 2
Uses of Method 2
As an activity to check for understanding
   Get students to work individually or in groups to discuss and attribute
   importance to themes/topics/words/phrases and enter the word and
   size into the wordle advance window
   Groups / individuals can then customize the look of their wordle and be
   prepared to present and justify their work
Step 11:

Using Method 2          click here




  Click on ‘Advanced’
Step 12:

Using Method 2
 Option a:

      Type in the words you would
      like your wordle to consist of

      Next to each word, type a        a
      colon and a number

         e.g. fruitbats:133                    click go to create

      The number will determine
      the size of that word in the         b
      wordle

      Tip: Allocate a larger
      number to words you want
      to emphasize
Step 13:

Using Method 2
 Option b:

     Has the added
     functionality of
     allowing you to pick   a
     the color of each
     word in the wordle

     HEX colors are used        b
       You need to know
                                    click go to create
       the 6 digit color
       code
