2. Education in Italy is compulsory from the age of 6 to 16.
At the end of Scuola Media (Lower Secondary school)
pupils take a school leaving exam and obtain a Certificate
(Diploma di Licenza Media), but they are obliged to attend
the first year of an Upper Secondary School to carry out their
compulsory education.
At the end of Upper Secondary Education (Grammar,
Technical or Vocational Schools) students take a final State
Exam (Esame di Stato) and obtain an Upper Secondary
School Diploma.
In Vocational Schools students can choose to take an
examination at the end of the third year in order to obtain a
vocational qualification (Integration project between State
Education and Vocational Training run by local government).
Students can then decide whether to continue till the end of
the fifth year or leave school.
Education is the responsibility of the Department of
Education. Schools are administered by local school districts
(C.S.A. Administrative Service Centre).
According to the Education Reform Act, today state
schools are given a certain amount of administrative
autonomy. Principals (Dirigente scolastico, a sort of school
manager) are responsible for the school budget.
