  4. March 2007 - Two months after Steve jobs rocked the world by unveiling the ipod, Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia bought Navteq (a navigation and road mapping company) for 8.1 billion dollars. Nokia pursued Navteq because it dominated in-road traffic sensor technology. Nokia concluded that owning these road sensors would help them dominate the mapping and mobile information space – and help them battle Google and Apple. The stratospheric price tag represented Navteqs near monopoly of the road sensor industry. Around the same time a company from Israel was created called Waze. Instead of the massive capital investment in road sensor hardware the founders decided to use crowdsourcing, by leveraging the GPS in each users phone. Within 2 years Waze was gathering traffic data from as many sources as Navteq and within four years it had ten times as many sources. What’s more the cost of each additional user was essentially zero not to mention there was no upgrade costs unlike Navteq which costs a fortune.   By June 2013 Nokia’s market valuation had plummeted from 140 billion to 8 billion, essentially what it had paid for Navteq! In June 2013 google bought Waze for 1.1 billion – at this point Waze had no infrastructure or hardware, and no more than 100 hundred employees however it did have fifty million users or more to the point 50 million human traffic sensors Nokia failed to see that things would not grow linearly but exponentially Consider Airbnb – its worth 10 billion and it does not own any assets, that is more than Hyatt hotels which has 45000 employees across 549 properties.

They also achieved 42% more return on sales and 66% more return on invested capital.   Women in work is not a diversity issue. It is a business issue. Use 100% of the talent out there. Talent will be your competitive advantage.

Why is she there. Because the Stanford lecturer put all his notes online and all MIT lectures are online and 1.5 million people has put it online. But he has also out the exam online. 20,000 people did the exam online, the same exam first year software engineering students at Stanford did online. She came first!!

The report entitled ‘Everyday Moments of Truth’ revealed that 43% of women surveyed aspire to a top management position in the first two years at a company, compared to 34% of men at that stage. However, over time these aspirations drop to 16% of women aiming for leadership roles. Men’s ambitions remain the same. The protein structure mystery was put on sharing platform for puzzle solvers and it was worked on by more than 600 players on 41 teams, all from the comfort of their own homes. Within ten days FoldIt players were able to solve a puzzle that had frustrated researchers for ten years. She was a member of a team called The Contenders and a science technician at a high school near Manchester. She had been playing Foldit for about 3 years. More importantly she abandoned the science field due to sexism She chooses to stay anonymous Maybe she should not – she is the future of gender in work – a woman working from anywhere on a sharing / collaborative platform who is the best in her field. Maybe she does need to tell her story and take the limelight to help others do the same
