As Christ opens four seals, horsemen ride across the stage ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The most common approach is to identify the first rider as Christ ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Another approach views all four riders as the minions of Satan ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

A third approach sees these riders as a parade of God’s powers ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The White Horse ,[object Object]

This is probably not the same as the rider John describes in Revelation 19 ,[object Object]

The rider in Revelation 19 is Christ ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

But is the rider in the first seal Christ? ,[object Object],[object Object]

The riders wear different crowns ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The riders carry different weapons ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

This group of four riders has an OT background ,[object Object]

As in Zechariah 6, the riders are agents to discipline God's enemies ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The horsemen in Revelation 6 are the winds in Revelation 7 ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

This group of riders suggests how God works in the destinies of nations ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The first rider rides a white horse ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The Red Horse ,[object Object]

The second rider rides a red horse ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

This rider is sent by the divine voice reminding of Jesus' words: ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The rhomphaia was the battle sword John attributes to Jesus ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The rider on the red horse carries a different sword, the Greek machaira ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The machaira was more like a knife than a sword ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

In the Septuagint, machaira described the sacrificial knife ,[object Object],[object Object]

In the NT, machaira also described the sword of governmental authority ,[object Object],[object Object]

The rider on the red horse rides on the heels of the white horse ,[object Object],[object Object]

The Black Horse ,[object Object]

Black is the color of mourning ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

It is not only the color of the horse that identifies the rider ,[object Object],[object Object]

The rider is carrying scales, on which to weigh out foodstuffs ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

This sounds like God's description of siege conditions in Jerusalem ,[object Object]

The Pale Horse ,[object Object]

The fourth rider rides a pale horse ,[object Object],[object Object]

But this is not just any kind of death - it is death by plague ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

In our own history, "death" has been used in a similar manner ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The four horsemen remind us of the scourges described by the prophets ,[object Object],[object Object]

These four horsemen are God's agents ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

God uses – then punishes – the godless (e.g. Sargon & Sennacherib) ,[object Object],[object Object]

God's agents wait to be released to do their work ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

THE FIFTH SEAL ,[object Object]

The fifth seal is the key to understanding the entire book ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

There is good reason to believe this is the altar of sacrifice ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The reader can hardly miss the sacrificial symbolism of the picture ,[object Object],[object Object]

These martyrs have followed the example of their Lord ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

This is more likely the golden incense altar in the holy place ,[object Object]

Elsewhere in Revelation the altar is the incense altar in the holy place ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

They remember God's promise to vindicate and avenge his people ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Now, the martyrs have a compelling question ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Each martyr in the picture was given a white robe ,[object Object],[object Object]

They were also told to wait a while ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

In Revelation 7 we will see them enjoying relief in the presence of God ,[object Object]

We will see them in Revelation 14 with the Lamb on Mount Zion ,[object Object]

We will see them in Revelation 15 having crossed over the sea ,[object Object]

They are by the sea that separated the elders from God in Revelation 4 ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

We see them rejoicing in Revelation 19 because God has avenged them ,[object Object]

Finally, in Revelation 20, we see them reigning with Christ ,[object Object]

Revelation is another Exodus, not unlike the Exodus of the OT ,[object Object],[object Object]

THE SIXTH SEAL ,[object Object]

The sixth seal describes cataclysmic events ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The figures used here are common in the Old Testament prophets ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

The Day of the Lord is a day of terror when God punishes his enemy ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Isaiah 34 is Edom's Day of the Lord ,[object Object]

Hosea describes Samaria's Day of the Lord at the hand of the Assyrians ,[object Object]

Nahum 1 is Assyria's Day of the Lord at the hand of the Babylonians ,[object Object]

Isaiah 2 is Judah's Day of the Lord at the hand of the Babylonians ,[object Object]

Isaiah 22 is Jerusalem's Day of the Lord at the hands of Babylon ,[object Object]

Zephaniah 1 describes Judah's Day of the Lord at the hand of Babylon ,[object Object]

Jeremiah 4 is also Judah's Day of the Lord at the hand of the Babylonians ,[object Object]

Ezekiel 32 is Egypt's Day of the Lord administered by the Babylonians ,[object Object]

Isaiah 13 is Babylon's Day of the Lord at the hand of Medo-Persia ,[object Object]
